Dissolution of atmospheric cobalt and zinc in seawater ArchiMer
Thuróczy, C.-e.; Boye, M.; Losno, R..
Atmospheric dust inputs to the surface ocean are a major source of trace metals likely to be bio-available for phytoplankton after their dissolution in seawater. Among them, cobalt (Co) and zinc (Zn) are essential for phytoplankton growth and for the distribution of the major groups such as coccolithophorids, cyanobacteria and diatoms. The solubility in seawater of Co and Zn present in natural and anthropogenic dusts was studied using an open-flow reactor with and without light irradiation. Those dusts can be transported in the atmosphere by the wind before being deposited to the surface ocean. The analyses of cobalt and zinc were conducted using voltammetric methods and the global elemental composition of dust was determined by ICP-AES. This study...

Distributions of dissolved trace metals (Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, Ag) in the southeastern Atlantic and the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Boye, M.; Wake, B. D.; Lopez Garcia, P.; Bown, J.; Baker, A. R.; Achterberg, E. P..
Comprehensive synoptic datasets (surface water down to 4000 m) of dissolved cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) are presented along a section between 34A degrees S and 57A degrees S in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Southern Ocean to the south off South Africa. The vertical distributions of Cu and Ag display nutrient-like profiles similar to silicic acid, and of Cd similar to phosphate. The distribution of Mn shows a subsurface maximum in the oxygen minimum zone, whereas Pb concentrations are rather invariable with depth. Dry deposition of aerosols is thought to be an important source of Pb to surface waters close to South Africa, and dry deposition and snowfall may have been significant sources of Cu and Mn at the...

Imprint of a dissolved cobalt basaltic source on the Kerguelen Plateau ArchiMer
Bown, J.; Boye, M.; Laan, P.; Bowie, A. R.; Park, Y. -h.; Jeandel, C.; Nelson, D. M..
Processes of cobalt (Co) entrainment from shelf sediments over the Kerguelen Plateau were studied during the KEOPS (Kerguelen Ocean Plateau compared Study) in order to explain the exceptionally high dissolved cobalt concentrations that have been measured in the surface waters above the Kerguelen Plateau, and in intermediate and deep waters above its eastern slope. Lateral advection and dissolution of Co contained in basalt sediments around Heard Island, a main source of lithogenic Co in the study area, were shown to imprint the process of surface enrichment over the plateau. Dissolved Co enrichment was strongest at the intercept of the eastern slope with intermediate and deep waters, probably due to more efficient mobilisation of the sediments in the slope...

Nitrogen uptake by phytoplankton in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean during late austral summer ArchiMer
Joubert, W. R.; Thomalla, S. J.; Waldron, H. N.; Lucas, M. I.; Boye, M.; Le Moigne, F. A. C.; Planchon, F.; Speich, Sabrina.
As part of the Bonus-GoodHope (BGH) campaign, (15)N-labelled nitrate, ammonium and urea uptake measurements were made along the BGH transect from Cape Town to similar to 60 degrees S in late austral summer, 2008. Our results are categorised according to distinct hydrographic regions defined by oceanic fronts and open ocean zones. High regenerated nitrate uptake rate in the oligotrophic Subtropical Zone (STZ) resulted in low f-ratios (f = 0.2) with nitrogen uptake being dominated by rho urea, which contributed up to 70% of total nitrogen uptake. Size fractionated chlorophyll data showed that the greatest contribution (>50 %) of picophytoplankton (<2 mu m) were found in the STZ, consistent with a community based on regenerated production. The...
