Goats reinfected with Toxoplasma gondii: loss of viable prolificacy and gross revenue 45
Silva,H. M.; Pereira,M. M.; Oliveira,T. A.; Almeida,H. M. S.; Bresciani,K.D.S.; Santana,L. F.; Soares,V. E.; Lopes,W. D. Z.; Castanheira,T. L. L.; Costa,A. J..
ABSTRACTWe determined the reproductive parameters and clinical disorders in pregnant goats infected and reinfected with Toxoplasma gondii, and posteriorly the loss of gross revenue due to congenital toxoplasmosis was estimated. Of the 25 non-pregnant females negative for T. gondii, 20 were orally inoculated (ME 49 strain) and of these, 15 pregnant females chronically infected were orally reinoculated (VEG strain) with T. gondii oocysts. Five groups were formed (n=5): GI, GII and GIII (reinoculations at 40, 80 and 120 days of gestation, respectively), GIV (inoculation) and GV (no inoculation). Clinical and serological exams were performed on days 0 (prior to inoculation), 3, 6 9, 15 and 21 and every 7 days post-inoculation. Exams were also performed on day...

Molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium spp. in lambs in the South Central region of the State of São Paulo 45
Zucatto,A.S.; Aquino,M.C.C.; Inácio,S.V.; Figueiredo,R.N.; Pierucci,J.C.; Perri,S.H.V.; Meireles,M.V.; Bresciani,K.D.S..
Considering the proximity of sheep farmers to animals that are possibly diseased or releasing fecal oocysts into the environment and the marked pathogenicity in lambs, the aim of this study was to determine the occurrence and to molecularly characterize the infection by Cryptosporidium spp. in lambs in the South Central region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 193 fecal samples were collected from sheep of several breeds, males and females, aged up to one year. Polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR) was used to amplify DNA fragments from the subunit 18S rRNA gene and indicated 15% positivity; sequencing of amplified fragments was possible for 19 samples. Analysis of the obtained sequences showed that the identified species were Cryptosporidium...
