Indicators of the economic performance of fishing vessels are frequently computed in various countries. In this paper, we use different types of information to assess capital value and the economic performance of fishing vessels. On the one hand, field surveys provide technical and financial information on the main components of fishing capital. On the other hand, book values are given in bookkeeping databases. Both sources of information on fishing capital are used for the same set of vessels, namely the commercial fishing fleet of the French region of Brittany. Based on these two sources, measures of economic performance can be produced for the short term using gross surplus; and for the long term including the cost of capital. The measures of... |

Since 2001, Ifremer has implemented an economic data collection programme (EDCP) within the Data Collection Framework of the EU. It aims to obtain economic data from a sample of vessels representative of the entire French fishing fleet. This paper presents the strategies used for vessel sampling selection in the French EDCP and its implementation over several consecutive years. The approach is illustrated by the sampling plan for the fleet in the North Sea Channel Atlantic region. We show that the EDCP allows precise economic indicators such as gross revenue or fuel costs to be estimated for the whole fishing fleet, including small vessels (< 10 m), and consequently, it facilitates sound scientific advice regarding the Common Fisheries Policy. The... |

While the majority of small-scale coastal fisheries are found in developing nations, a considerable number exist in developed nations as well. Indeed, small-scale fisheries are strongly represented in all European Union (EU) Member States, 81% and 87% of the EU 25 whole fleet is composed of vessels less than 12 and 15 meters long respectively. In 2000, European regulation established a fisheries data collection framework including economic information requirements in order to provide the scientific basis for the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy. This paper presents the methodology designed to collect the relevant economic data and characterize the status of the French fleets from an economic perspective. Based on stratified sampling plan... |

This document, which is the fifth edition of a series started in 2000, provides a global overview of the data collected in 2007 as part of the Fisheries Observatory of Ifremer. It includes a brief account of the activity and financial situation of the French fleets operating in the North Sea, English Channel, Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea in 2006 and updates the 2005 issue, which was published in 2006. The summary is intended for a wide audience. The document contains several fact sheets : • The first sheet provides a global description of the French national (excluding overseas) fishing fleet (North Sea - Channel, Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea), including vessel and crew characteristics. It also presents the evolution of the French fishing... |
