Climate change scenarios exhibit a definite warming trend (Schröter et al. 2005), and it will have an impact on crop management strategies. Increase in winter precipitation and higher temperatures favour soil borne pathogens and can lead to an increase in survival rate and to more rapid population buildup (Chakraborty et al. 2000). In recent years, one of the main reasons for declining production of summer pea in organic farming in Germany are foot and root rot pathogens (Pflughöft 2008). On the other hand, predicted increase in winter temperatures is expected to favour winter pea over summer pea varieties. The hope is also, that winter peas are less susceptible to root rot as summer peas. However, few data are available. The present study was carried out... |

Integration of additional leguminous living mulch and cover crop species holds a great potential for reducing external inputs and improving agricultural sustainability. However, changes towards legume rich crop rotations raises concerns as many of the species of interest share important soil-borne pathogens with some important main crops such as peas, beans and cereals. The pathogenicity towards the spring pea variety Santana was determined for 67 isolates of Fusarium oxysporum, F. solani, F. avenaceum, Didymella spp., Phoma medicaginis and Phoma spp. obtained from seemingly healhty roots of Trifolium subterraneum, T. repens, Vicia villosa and V. sativa. Only one isolate of F. solani and two isolates of Phoma spp. were nonpathogenic. F. avenaceum isolates... |

Foot rot is an important limiting factor in pea production in Germany (Pflughöft, 2008). The disease is caused by a pathogen complex consisting of Ascochyta complex pathogens (Mycospharella pinodes, Phoma medicaginis and Ascochyta pisi) and Fusarium spp. However, little is known about the specificity of single pathogens of the complex and their impact on plant performance. In order to address this problem pot experiments with five isolates each of Fusarium solani f.sp pisi, Fusarium avenaceum and Mycosphaerella pinodes were carried out in controlled conditions. Three weeks after sowing and inoculation disease symptoms were assessed and plant growth parameters measured. All pathogens caused root discoloration and development of disease symptoms on pea... |

The project CO-FREE (2012-2016) aimed to develop strategies to replace/reduce copper use in organic, integrated and conventional farming. CO-FREE alternative test products (CTPs) were tested and integrated together with decision support systems, disease-tolerant varieties, and innovative breeding goals (ideotypes) into improved management strategies. CO-FREE focused on apple/apple scab (Venturia inaequalis), grape/downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and tomato and potato/late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Starting point of the project were ten CTPs with direct or indirect modes of action including Trichoderma atroviride SC1 and protein extract SCNB, Lysobacter spp., yeast-based derivatives, Cladosporium cladosporioides H39, the oligosaccharidic complex... |

In an EU CRAFT project (COOP-CT-2004-508458) running from March 2004 to March 2006, an international consortium of producers of environmen-tally benign crop inputs (BFPs: Biological Food for Plants), RTD performers and end users, evaluated the production and use of BFPs manufactured from differ-ent raw materials: bovine hides, trees, and herba-ceous species. At the manufacturing level, production methods and procedures were reviewed to establish possible relationships between processing steps and end-product quality. At the field level, the BFP prod-ucts were applied as solid pellets or liquids, as fertil-isers or sprays, respectively, on organically grown potatoes and tomatoes and conventionally grown watermelon, cauliflower, strawberries, black currant,... |

Reduced tillage combined with about 10cm of fresh mulch of a mixture of green peas and rye was compared to a system with conventional tillage with a plow for its effects on disease development of Phytophthora infestans. Within tillage treatments the precrops for potatoes were weedy fallow, vetch (Vicia sativa), or a mixture of oilseed radish and black oats with or without compost application. The Area Under the Disease Progress Curve in the minimum tillage and mulched plots was on average 881 while in the plowed plots it was 1336, a highly significant difference. Yield data are currently being analyzed and will be presented. |

Fertile soils are highly important for arable farming. To maintain soil fertility, crop rotation including legumes is applied, particularly in stockless farms. Yet, many commercial farms report yield reductions for legumes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the causes for the observed soil fatigue can be narrowed down by a bioassay (modified differential diagnosis according to Bouhot) and whether this bioassay could be a useful tool to predict the suitability of a field to grow legumes. |

Experiments were conducted to determine how tillage intensity, the use of biofumigation brassica cover crops and mixed cropping with oats affect the performance of organic peas with respect to weed pressure, diseases, and yield. Fields were either ploughed to a depth of about 15-20 cm or only to about 8 cm in late summer followed by either Sinapis alba (low glucosinolate (GSC) content), Raphanus sativus (medium GSC) or Brassica juncea (high GSC). Brassicas were mulched in fall right before flowering and incorporated in the top soil. In mixtures with oats seed rate for peas was as in pure stands, for oats it was 20 %. There was a dramatic spring drought in 2011 resulting in severe water stress for the peas in 2011. Weeds were significantly reduced by about... |

Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans is commonly thought to be the factor most limiting yield in organic potato production. However, because there is no fully effective fungicide available to control late blight, there are virtually no yield loss data available for organic farming conditions. In large-scale experiments covering 2-6 ha from 2000-2002, late blight assessments were conducted throughout the season in small sections throughout the field. The same sections were harvested, resulting in between 400 and 700 data points per experiment and year. In a second set of experiments, from 2002-2004, the interactive effects of N-availability in the soil, climatic conditions and late blight were studied in the presence and absence of copper... |

Three potato varieties – Nicola, Rosella, and Simone, differing in the time of initiation of tuber formation (early, middle, late, respectively) – were grown in a 3-factorial field trial for two years in 2 rotational positions i. e. after grass clover and winter wheat in order to induce a different fertility status. A copper control was included. Nitrogen supply after grass clover was between 26 to 32 kg higher than after winter wheat. Late blight severity was high in 2002 but almost nil in 2003 (Area under the curve 1100 versus 75, respectively). In both years, it was consistently but not significantly higher after grass clover. N-mineralisation rates in 2002 were below average due to unfavourable weather conditions in May and June. Thus, only in 2003 the... |

Potatoes are one of the most important crops in organic farming with respect to farmers’ income. Yields are often strongly influenced by regional and yearly diffe-rences. Despite the availability of detailed knowledge, it is only now that a crop growth model has been generated which allows for the estimation and prediction of potato yield under organic conditions. The aim of our study was to produce a highly elaborate prediction model based on the utilization and speed of nitrogen uptake as they relate to the yield dynamics of tubers and canopy in combination with late blight dynamics. Therefore, from 2005 to 2014, these parameters were assessed in up to 18 varieties of potatoes comprised of differing maturity groups. The data were ana-lyzed in R using... |
