The discovery of two localities of Cornus mas in the farthest south of the Netherlands induced the authors to study the distribution of the species in Northwest Europe. They arrived at the conclusion that the species is indigenous in the Netherlands, in the southern part of the calcareous district i.e. the uttermost south of the province of Limburg. A line running diagonally through Belgium from the Straits of Dover to Maastricht; in the Netherlands from Maastricht to Aachen and in Germany from Aachen to Gottingen is considered to be the northern boundary of the species area in Western Europe. |

This paper deals with the results of a microscopical analysis of the lignites of the miocene browncoal from the quarry “Anna” in the south of Limburg (Netherlands). They appeared to consist of 14 wood species, distributed over Conifers (6). Monocotyledons (1) and Dicotyledons (7). Four dicotyledonous woods were found for the first time and described here. Some conclusions about vegetation and climate are added. |

Wood-remains of the Lower Pleistocene type locality of the Tiglian have been described and identified. The resulting flora is compared with Recent European forest-vegetations and a strong affinity with flood plain forests has been established. Also a comparison with flood plain forest vegetations of North America, East Asia and the Pontic area is made. The Tegelen wood-flora can at best be compared with the floras found in N. E. Asia and in the Pontic area. The climatic implications of this comparison and of the floristic composition of the Tegelen wood-flora are discussed. |
