Demand for organic meat is partially driven by consumer perceptions that organic foods are more nutritious than non-organic foods. However, there have been no systematic reviews comparing specifically the nutrient content of organic and conventionally produced meat. In this study, we report results of a meta-analysis based on sixty-seven published studies comparing the composition of organic and non-organic meat products. For many nutritionally relevant compounds (e.g. minerals, antioxidants and most individual fatty acids (FA)), the evidence base was too weak for meaningful meta-analyses. However, significant differences in FA profiles were detected when data from all livestock species were pooled. Concentrations of SFA and MUFA were similar or slightly...

Conjugated linoleic acid isomer concentrations in milk from high- and low-input management dairy systems Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian; Collomb, Marius; Rehberger, Brita; Sanderson, Roy; Eyre, Mick D.; Leifert, Carlo.
BACKGROUND: Different conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers are known to have contrasting physiology or health effects and there is growing evidence that the profile of natural isomers in milk is influenced by the production system. This survey is the first to compare feeding regimes and concentrations of 14 CLA isomers inmilk from three production systems in the UK. RESULTS: Total CLA and seven isomers (including C18 : 2 c9t11 which comprised >80% of total) were significantly higher in milk from both organically certified and non certified low input (LI) systems compared with milk from conventional high input farms. Sampling date also affected concentrations of total CLA and nine isomers; being lowest in March and highest in August. Seasonal...

Effect of dairy management on quality characteristics of milk Organic Eprints
Slots, Tina; Leifert, Carlo; Butler, Gillian; Kristensen, Troels; Nielsen, Jacob Holm.
The objective of the study was (i) to compare the nutritional composition of milk produced in organic and conventional production systems taking into consideration: different proportions of grass or grass silage, maize silage and different amount of concentrate (cereals), and (ii) to define the variation in content of pro- and antioxidants in milk in relation to regional variation, feeding and season. The feeding regime from 25 farms from Denmark, 20 farms from Sweden and 25 farms from United Kingdom was reg-istered and milk samples were collected and analysed for the content of antioxidants and fatty acid compo-sition. The daily milk production was significantly higher in the conventional milk production systems in the two Scandinavian countries compared...

Effect of Three Husbandry Systems on Environmental Impact of Organic Pigs Organic Eprints
Rudolph, Gwendolyn; Hörtenhuber, Stefan; Bochicchio, Davide; Butler, Gillian; Brandhofer, Roland; Dippel, Sabine; Dourmad, Jean Yves; Edwards, Sandra; Früh, Barbara; Meier, Matthias; Prunier, Armelle; Winckler, Christoph; Zollitsch, Werner; Leeb, Christine.
This study examined the environmental impact of the three common organic pig husbandry systems, indoor (n = 24), partly outdoor (n = 30), and outdoor (n = 10), in eight European countries. Global warming (GWP), acidification (AP), and eutrophication potential (EP) was assessed per 1000 kg pig live weight on 64 farrow-to-finish pig production chains (cradle to farm gate). GWP, AP, and EP varied greatly, and the most important source was feed production, followed by housing. GWP did not differ between systems (p = 0.934), but AP in indoor systems and EP in outdoor systems were higher than in partly outdoor systems (p = 0.006 and p = 0.010, respectively). The higher AP in indoor systems can mainly be explained by NH3 arising from manure spreading, while...

Fatty acid and fat-soluble antioxidant concentrations in milk from high- and low-input conventional and organic systems: seasonal variation Organic Eprints
Butler, Gillian; Nielsen, Jacob H.; Slots, Tina; Seal, Chris; Eyre, Mick D.; Sanderson, Roy; Leifert, Carlo.
BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed differences in fatty acid (FA) and antioxidant profiles between organic and conventional milk. However, they did not (a) investigate seasonal differences, (b) include non-organic, lowinput systems or (c) compare individual carotenoids, stereoisomers of α-tocopherol or isomers of conjugated linoleic acid. This survey-based study compares milk from three production systems: (i) high-input, conventional (10 farms); (ii) low-input, organic (10 farms); and (iii) low-input non-organic (5 farms). Samples were taken during the outdoor grazing (78 samples) and indoor periods (31 samples). RESULTS: During the outdoor grazing period, on average, milk from the low-input systems had lower saturated FAs, but higher mono- and...

Impact of US Brown Swiss genetics on milk quality from low-input herds in Switzerland: Interactions with season Organic Eprints
Stergiadis, Sokratis; Bieber, Anna; Chatzidimitriou, Eleni; Franceschin, Enrica; Isensee, Anne; Rempelos, Leonidas; Baranski, Marcin; Maurer, Veronika; Cozzi, Giulio; Bapst, Beat; Butler, Gillian; Leifert, Carlo.
This study investigated the effect of, and interactions between, US Brown Swiss (BS) genetics and season on milk yield, basic composition and fatty acid profiles, from cows on low-input farms in Switzerland. Milk samples (n = 1,976) were collected from 1,220 crossbreed cows with differing proportions of BS, Braunvieh and Original Braunvieh genetics on 40 farms during winter-housing and summer-grazing. Cows with more BS genetics produced more milk in winter but not in summer, possibly because of underfeeding potentially high-yielding cows on low-input pasture-based diets. Cows with more Original Braunvieh genetics produced milk with more (i) nutritionally desirable eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids, throughout the year, and (ii) vaccenic and...

Management factors affecting udder health and effects of a one year extension program in organic dairy herds Organic Eprints
Ivemeyer, Silvia; Walkenhorst, Michael; Heil, Fritz; Notz, Christophe; Maeschli, Ariane; Butler, Gillian; Klocke, Peter.
The first part of this study was a cross-sectional analysis of the impact of 29 management factors on udder health in organic dairy farms in Switzerland. All 77 farms joined the extension program ‘pro-Q’. As a measure of udder health the theoretical bulk milk somatic cell count (TBMSCC)calculated by the monthly cow composite somatic cell count over a time period of 1 year was chosen. The basic udder health of the farms was determined by TBMSCC during the year prior to the start of the project (mean for all farms 176,460 cells/ml). In the multivariable analysis, the five factors ‘swiss brown breed’, ‘alpine summer pasturing’, ‘calf feeding with milk from mastitis diseased cows’, ‘hard bedding’ and ‘no post-milking’ remained as significant risk factors on...

Nutritional characteristics of the diets in organic pig production Organic Eprints
Prunier, Armelle; Rudolph, Gwendolyn; Bodicchio, Davide; Butler, Gillian; Dippel, Sabine; Leeb, Christine.
A better knowledge of the rations pigs receive, should help identify weaknesses and hence improve the efficiency of organic pig production. A research project was initiated in 8 EU countries (ProPIG from the ERANET CoreOrganic II) involving 72 farms: 59 with sows (53 farrow-to-finish = FF, 5 with and 1 without weaners), 11 fattening (F) and 2 with weaners and fatteners. Farmers were asked to describe their feeding practices and the nutrient content of feeds used was recorded, either from the manufacturer claim or calculated from ingredients. Four FF farms used a single diet for all pigs. For sows, 46% of the farms fed the same diet. For fatteners, 58% of the farms used a single diet, 38% used two diets and 5% used 3 diets. For weaners, 73% of the farms...

PigSurfer – SURveillance, FEedback & Reporting within ProPIG for communication with 75 pig farmers Organic Eprints
Leeb, Christine; Bochicchio, Davide; Butler, Gillian; Edwards, Sandra; Früh, Barbara; Illmann, Gudrun; Prunier, Armelle; Rousing, Tine; Rudolph, Gwendolyn; Dippel, Sabine.
The CoreOrganic2 research project ProPIG is carried out in 75 organic pig farms in 8 European countries (AT; CH; CZ; DE; DK; FR; IT; UK) to improve animal health, welfare and nutrition using farm customised strategies. For future on-farm application (e.g. advisory/certification activities, which are mostly carried out during one day visits), a practical, automatic recording and feedback tool was developed. This should allow on-farm data collection, import of data into a database and the possibility for benchmarking, including a printed output for the farmer to facilitate immediate discussion of results and improvement strategies. To document not only animal health and welfare, but also integrate diet composition and productivity data, it was important to...
