Objective: The objective was to estimate economic values for production traits in a full life cycle system using a bio-economic model with Angus purebred and a terminal crossbreeding system with Nelore sires mated to Angus dams. Study Description: Phenotypic performance data were collected from the Bifequali crossbreeding scheme at the Embrapa Pecuária Sul Research Center of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation. The data consisted of performance and carcass traits measured on progeny of Angus purebred and Nelore sires mated to Angus dams raised in a pasture-based production system from birth to slaughter (full life cycle). The economic characterization of the system was based on fixed costs and variable costs. The bio-economic was developed in... |

A set of 41,241 SNP genotypes from 2,435 Hereford (HH) and Braford (BO) bovines were analyzed to estimate linkage disequilibrium (LD) levels, persistence of phase and effective population size of these populations. LD levels were estimated using the squared correlation of alleles at two loci (r2) at varying distances. Average r2 between adjacent SNP was 0.21 for HH and 0.16 for BO. Average inter-marker distance was 61 kb in both breeds. Useful LD values (r2>0.2) were observed at 0-60 kb bins in HH and 0-20 kb bins in BO. Breeds demonstrated moderate to strong persistence of phase at all distances (range=0.53-0.97). The greatest phase correlations (r>0.9) were found in 0-50 kb bins. LD estimates decreased rapidly with increasing distances between... |

Despite to be a traditional activity in southern Brazil, beef cattle production based exclusively in natural grasslands normally presents low animal productivity, reflecting a misunderstanding of basic management practices like control of forage allowance and or lack of utilization of others possibilities of foraging. |

Abstract Background: Genetic improvement in livestock populations can be achieved without significantly affecting genetic diversity if mating systems and selection decisions take genetic relationships among individuals into consideration. The objective of this study was to examine the genetic diversity of two commercial breeds of pigs. Genotypes from 1168 Landrace (LA) and 1094 Large White (LW) animals from a commercial breeding program in Brazil were obtained using the Illumina PorcineSNP60 Beadchip. Inbreeding estimates based on pedigree (Fx) and genomic information using runs of homozygosity (FROH) and the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) by SNP inbreeding coefficient (FSNP) were obtained. Linkage disequilibrium (LD), correlation of linkage phase... |
