Innovation in agriculture is needed to face multiple challenges and reach sustainability. We aim at involving farmers in the design of innovative pilot farms, using agroforestry and agroecology to maximize ecosystemic services and minimize reliance to plant protection products. Projects are designed for long channels or for direct selling, with consequences in term of crop diversity and plot size. They started in 2013 and will be run on a long-term basis.

Concevoir et expérimenter des vergers agroforestiers en Agriculture Biologique (VERtiCAL). Organic Eprints

The VERtiCAL research project focused from 2013 to 2018 on the spatial and temporal diversification of fruit tree systems as a relevant mean for reducing pesticide use. The project resulted in the design and assessment of two fruit agroforestry systems (AFS), called "TAB" and "Durette", managed in organic farming and with specific technical and economic characteristics. The project allowed co-design experiences and led to the development of a new tool for ex ante assessment of AFS. First results show a 52% reduction of pesticides on the TAB system compared to a conventional reference system while reaching yield objectives, and a very low reliance to pesticides on the Durette system. As for biodiversity, specific richness of birds increased from 12 to 24...

Preparing the seed cards • Prepare 10 sand paper cards (5 cm x 5 cm) per field and 10 predator exclusion cages with 1 cm squared metal net to avoid predation by mammals and birds. • Glue 10 poppy seeds on each card and place each card within an exclusion cage. Data collection • Collect data twice during the crop cycle, preferably in spring for winter cereals (avoiding drought periods). • Define two transects in the monitored field. Place 5 seed cards with exclusion cage along each transect and nail them into the floor (day D). • Remove them after 4 days of exposure to predators • Count the remaining seeds on each card.

Vertical project : designing fruit agroforestry systems for a renewed horticulture Organic Eprints

Although it's addressing multiple issues for modern farming, agroforestry mixing fruit trees and annual crops (mainly vegetables) has not been so well documented under temperate climate. One expected amenity of agroforestry is to increase biodiversity and natural pest regulation within the plot. While fruit trees are among the crops that rely most on plant protection products, we made the hypothesis that introduction of annual crops in the perennial system can lead to effective biocontrol and to input reduction, while developing other synergies between crops (shadow beneficial effects, water limitation, ….) or social amenities.
