Ambient levels and occurence of persistent organic pollutans (POPs) in the airshed of a mediterranean coastal lagoon ArchiMer
Castro-jimenez, Javier; Mariani, G.; Vives, I.; Skejo, A.; Umlauf, G.; Zaldivar, Jose-manuel; Messiaen, Gregory; Laugier, Thierry.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) present in the airshed of a given environment may participate in exchange / deposition processes that will determine their inputs to the terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems. In addition, physico-chemical properties of POPs may favour long range atmospheric transport to other areas, even reaching remote zones. It is therefore important to determine the airshed POPs concentration in order to evaluate the potential amounts that may participate in the mentioned processes. Coastal lagoons are characterized by a high biodiversity and intense primary production leading to both ecological and economical considerable importance. Thau lagoon seems to be under intense anthropogenic pressure (urban, industrial, agricultural and shell...

Atmospheric occurrence, transport and deposition of polychlorinated biphenyls and hexachlorobenzene in the Mediterranean and Black seas ArchiMer
Berrojalbiz, N.; Castro-jimenez, Javier; Mariani, G.; Wollgast, J.; Hanke, G.; Dachs, J..
The Mediterranean and Black seas are unique marine environments subject to important anthropogenic pressures due to direct and indirect loads of atmospheric inputs of organochlorine compounds (OCls) from primary and secondary sources. Here we report the results obtained during two east-west sampling cruises in June 2006 and May 2007 from Barcelona to Istanbul and Alexandria, respectively, where gas-phase and aerosol-phase samples were collected. Both matrices were analyzed for 41 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including dioxin-like congeners, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). The values reported in this study for gas-phase HCB and Sigma 41PCB limit of detection (LOD) to 418.3 pg m(-3) and from 81.99 to 931.6 pg m(-3) respectively) are in the same range of...

Diurnal Variability of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Atmosphere over the Remote Southern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Gioia, Rosalinda; Macleod, Matthew; Castro-jimenez, Javier; Nizzetto, Luca; Dachs, Jordi; Lohmann, Rainer; Jones, Kevin C..
A diel (24-h) cycle with daytime atmospheric concentrations higher than nighttime concentrations by a factor of 1.5-3 was observed for several low molecular weight polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in remote areas of the tropical South Atlantic during a cruise in October-November 2005. In contrast, high molecular weight PCBs and PAHs did not display diurnal variability. A model which has successfully explained diel variability of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) over land could not reproduce the observed diel cycle by considering variability in temperature, atmospheric OH radical concentrations, atmospheric boundary layer height and wind speed as causal factors. We used the model to conduct two bounding...

How Enhancing Atmospheric Monitoring and Modeling can be Effective for the Stockholm Convention on POPs ArchiMer
Guardans, Ramon; Castro-jimenez, Javier.
The presence of toxic substances such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment, and in organisms including humans, is a serious public health and environmental problem, even at low levels and poses a challenging scientific problem. The Stockholm Convention on POPs (SC) entered into force in 2004 and is a large international effort under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to facilitate cooperation in monitoring, modeling and the design of effective and fair ways to deal with POPs globally. This paper is a contribution to the ongoing effectiveness evaluation (EE) work aimed at the assessment and enhancement of the effectiveness of the actions undertaken under the SC. First we consider some aspects related to the monitoring of...

One-Single Extraction Procedure for the Simultaneous Determination of a Wide Range of Polar and Nonpolar Organic Contaminants in Seawater ArchiMer
Fauvelle, Vincent; Castro-jimenez, Javier; Schmidt, Natascha; Carlez, Benoit; Panagiotopoulos, Christos; Sempere, Richard.
A rapid analytical method including one-single solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedure followed by gas and liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry detection (GC-MS and LC-HRMS respectively) was developed for the quantification of 40 organic compounds (1.6 < log K-ow < 9.5) in seawater including both legacy and emerging contaminants, with a focus on the most common plastic organic additives. This new method allowed for the analyses of nine organophosphate esters (OPEs), seven phthalates (PAEs), six bisphenols (BPs), five perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and thirteen legacy organochlorinated compounds (OCs, including polychlorobiphenyles and pesticides) with recoveries in the ranges of 57-124% for OPEs, 52-163% for PAEs,...
