The oxygen isotopes ratios of benthic foraminifera and detailed radiocarbon ages of the organic matter of an over 15 m long sediment core from the outer Niger delta allow us to date the oxygen isotope stage boundaries 1,2 to 11500 (+ 650) years BP. 2/3 to approximately 23000 (+ 2000) years BP. The composition of the predominantly terrigenous clays and accessory pelagic fossils reflects the evolution of the climate over the southwestern Sahel zone and the response of the Eastern Tropical Atlantic to these climatic fluctuations during the Late Quaternary. Results are presented on recent investigations about the paleoenvironmental signification of Mesozoic and Cenozoic clay successions, recovered in marginal areas of Atlantic and North-West Pacific Oceans and in the Mediterranean Sea. Chiefly derived from adjacent land-masses, clay assemblages represent useful indicators of major tectonical, climatical, hydrodynamical and morphological events which occurred through time. Examples are chosen in different sedimentary basins, and at different geological periods from late Jurassic to late Quaternary. Results are compared with previous work, in order to emphasize the advantages and limitations of using clay materials to reconstruct the patterns of paleosedimentation. |

Surficial sediments and detailed submarine morphology of the southern Strait of Dover have been mapped using different complementary techniques: side-scan sonar survey, bottom sediment sampling, and bathymetry. The geometry and regional pattern of sand bodies - sand waves, megaripples, sand ribbons, etc. - as well as current-meter data and eight radioactive tracing experiments in different settings, are presented and analyzed. The mean regional net sand transport is 0.2 m super(3)/linear metre/day. The strong tidal currents of the region studied are considered as the main factor responsible for sand transport, while the swell plays an important but local role in maintaining particulate matter in suspension. |
