A model of the relationship between light and primary production in an atoll lagoon IRD

The Tikehau atoll (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia) is located at 14°S 148°W. Phytoplankton and sand microalgae are the most important primary producers of the lagoon. They were studied for 4 years. The relationship between light energy and lagoonal primary production was measured by using the 14C method for phytoplankton and O2 method for phytobenthos. Incubations, carried out #in situ$, were made at different depths and light exposition times. Irradiance was hight and 17% of the light energy measured at the surface reached 25 m (lagoon average depth). Les concentrations en azote et phosphore ont été mesurées dans le lagon et dans les eaux océaniques avoisinant de l'atoll de Tikehau de 1984 à 1987. La présence de l'atoll perturbe les profils des sels nutritifs : la couche superficielle des eaux océaniques est enrichie, autour de l'atoll, en azote minéral et en orthophosphates. Les concentrations et nutrilites du lagon varient avec le mois et l'année. Excepté pour NH4, les sels nutritifs sont moins abondants dans le lagon que dans les eaux océaniques de surface. La biomasse des organismes inférieurs à 35 microns a été évaluée dans les eaux oligotrophes du bassin nord fidjien (océan Pacifique sud-ouest) en septembre-octobre 1985 (croisière Proligo). Cette biomasse a été évaluée de deux façons; d'une part globalement à partir de mesures d'ATP pour la biomasse totale, et de mesures chl#a$ pour la biomasse des autotrophes; d'autre part à partir de comptages en épifluorescence et après coloration pour évaluer l'importance des différents taxons : eubactéries, cyanobactéries, hétéroflagellés et ciliés hétérotrophes

Nutrients and particulate organic matter in the Great Astrolabe Reef lagoon IRD

During the joint Fijian-French ASTRO cruise conducted in April 1994 in the Great Astrolabe lagoon and surrounding oceanic waters. Nutrient concentration and particulate organic matter stock and sedimentation rate was quantitatively investigated at 10 sampling stations. Dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations were low in all the lagoon. Average POC and PON concentrations were respectively 144 and 20 mg/m3. The average sedimentation rate for these elements were 37 and 8 mg/m2/day. (Résumé d'auteur)

Phytoplankton biomass and productivity of the Great Astrolabe Reef lagoon were studied using measurements of chlorophyll concentration and carbon uptake. Average chlorophyll concentration was 0.8 mg/m3 with 45 % of phytoplankton passing through 3 microm. Primary production was 1.3 gC/m2/day (30 m depth) with 47 % due to phytoplankton < 3 microm. Phytoplankton standing stock levels and bivalve culture potential in Aitutaki and Rarotonga lagoons, Cook islands IRD

Basic physical and biological water quality parameter were investigated in Aitutaki lagoon and Avana Stream estuary complex on Rarotonga (Cook Islands). Maximum potential of net primary production was used to estimate a potential bivalve production of 0.4 kg m-2 for Aitutaki lagoon. Preliminary results on production and calcification of coral reefs communities of Tikehau atoll IRD

The carbon and oxygen metabolism of some coral reef communities of Tikehau atoll were studied in November 1989. Calcification, photosynthèse and respiration were measured during incubation experiments in transparent plastic bags. Over 24 hours period, we observed a net calcification rate for the three studied communities. However, only #Halimeda$ community presented an excess production. (Résumé d'auteur)

Les #Prochlorococcus$ sont mis en évidence pour la première fois dans un lagon d'atoll. La répartition du phytoplancton au sein de la colonne d'eau était hétérogène. On distinguait une couche superficielle (0-10 m) moins riche en phytoplancton où les picoeucaryotes étaient le groupe dominant et une couche sous-jacente plus riche où le groupe dominant était des cyanobactéries du genre #Synechococcus$. Les maxima de biomasse, d'abondance et de production étaient systématiquement localisés dans la couche sous-jacente. Les pourcentages intégrés des #Prochlorococcus$, des #Synechococcus$ et des picoeucaryotes étaient respectivement 20 %, 78 %, 2 % pour les abondances, et 2 %, 57 % et 41 % pour les fluorescences.
