A Continuum of Consumer Attitudes Toward Genetically Modified Foods in the United States AgEcon

A national telephone survey was conducted in the United States in April 2002 to study the consumer acceptance of genetically modified (GM) foods. Attitudes toward GM foods were examined through the use of a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), analyzing the interrelationships among many categorical variables. This method was combined with a cluster analysis to construct a typology of consumers' attitudes. Four distinct classes of attitudes were finally extracted, denoted as: Proponents, Non-Opponents, Moderate Opponents, and Extreme Opponents. It was estimated that only 35% of the surveyed population was opposed to GM foods.

A Dynamic Analysis of Food Demand Patterns in Urban China AgEcon

Previous researchers have encountered difficulties in rationalizing the extremely high expenditure elasticities estimated for grain demanded by urban Chinese households. The high grain expenditure elasticities, which usually translate into high income elasticities, are doubtful for making a long-term prediction of grain demand in China. Unlike most previous studies using only statistic models, this study employs a dynamic Almost Ideal Demand System (DAIDS) incorporating demographic variables to explore the impact of habit effects as well as demographic impacts on household level food demand pattern in urban China. Analysis of Country of Origin Labeling for Food Products in Taiwan Using Auction Experiment with Tasting AgEcon

This study attempts to evaluate the economic benefits of the country of origin labeling (COOL) in Taiwan. A Vickrey second-price sealed-bid auction was conducted to estimate the consumer’s willingness to pay for Taiwan products vs. those from China and Vietnam. Our experiment was designed to investigate the impacts of product tasting on bidding behavior. The regression results show that tasting raised bids for Taiwan and China teas, but lowered bids for Vietnam tea. The econometric results show very high premiums for Taiwan products. Taiwanese consumers and food producers stand to benefit greatly with COOL.

ARE LOWER-INCOME SHOPPERS AS PRICE SENSITIVE AS HIGHER-INCOME ONES?: A LOOK AT BREAKFAST CEREALS AgEcon

Scanner data for breakfast cereals are used to estimate demand elasticities for six supermarket stores in two distinct socio-economic areas. Three stores are in low-income locations and three are in high-income locations. A time series cross-section model is estimated for five product categories across six cross sections over forty-two weeks. Results show lower-income shoppers to have more elastic demands for four of the five product categories: private label cold cereals, the top ten brands of cold cereals, all other brands of cold cereals, and hot cereals. Price is not statistically significant for a fifth product category, snack cereals.

This research is aimed at investigating the consumer’s preference for food produced in Taiwan and the economic benefits for the country of origin labeling. The study uses both experimental auction and contingent valuation method (CVM) to investigate factors that affect the consumer’s willingness to pay (WTP) for products under country-of-origin labeling (COOL). Experimental auctions of Taiwan and China preserved olives as well as Taiwan, China and Vietnam oolong teas were conducted using the Vickrey’s second price sealed bid auction. Results from an Ohio survey indicate that respondents are willing to pay a premium, ranging from 5% for non-GM vegetable oil to 28% for non-GM salmon. Estimated consumer willingness to pay for non-GM foods varies among demographic groups with female, those aged between 35 and 60, and non-White respondents willing to pay a higher premium than others.

CONSUMER ACCEPTANCE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS: A TELEPHONE SURVEY AgEcon

This paper reports results from a pilot U.S. national telephone survey on genetically modified foods (vegetable oil, cornflake cereal, and salmon). The survey featured contingent valuation in which respondents chose between the GM and non-GM alternatives. The binary and multinomial logit models yield estimated willingness to pay to avoid the GM alternatives. Perceived risk of GM food is an important determinant of GM choice along with the price. Respondents are willing to pay 41.2%, 31.4%, 40.9%, and 52.5% of the base prices to avoid GM vegetable oil, GM cornflakes, GM-fed salmon, and GM salmon, respectively.

This paper finds Taiwanese consumers' willingness to pay a premium on the non-GM food differs from their willingness to accept a discount on the GM food. It further finds that the non-GM choosers are more committed to the non-GM food than the GM choosers to the GM food.

Consumer Attitudes towards Genetically Modified Foods in Emerging Markets: The Impact of Labeling in Taiwan AgEcon

In 2001, Taiwan enacted a law for genetically modified food (GM foods) labeling. Beginning January 1st 2003, food containing more than 5% of GM ingredients must be labeled. Taiwan imports most of its soybeans from the United States. In order to assess the effects of the new policy, a telephone survey was conducted in 2002. A total of 257 interviews were completed. A typology of consumers' attitudes towards GM foods is constructed from the use of a multiple correspondence analysis and a classification method. Four profiles are identified: proponents, 52%, moderate opponents, 32.5%, extreme opponents, 12.5%, and those with no opinion, 5.5%.

DEMAND FOR HEALTHY FOOD IN THE UNITED STATES AgEcon

This study investigates the demand for selected healthy food groups in the United States. The original linear approximate almost ideal demand system (LA/AIDS) is modified by the use of a Laspeyres index and a normalization in order to compute demand elasticities identically to the AIDS model. The results of this study suggest that poultry is the most price elastic while cereals are the least price elastic. Fresh fruits and fresh vegetables are more price elastic than processed fruits and processed vegetables. Currently over 30% of American adults are obese, more than twice the percentage prevalent in 1980 (American Obesity Association). At the same time, almost 65% adult Americans are said to be overweight. Such high prevalence levels are a major public health concern. Emerging Markets for GM Foods: A Study of Consumer's Willingness to Pay in India AgEcon

A random utility approach is used to estimate logit equations which indicate what factors affect the likelihood of consumption of non-GM and GM foods, and, whether or not consumers are willing to pay a premium for non-GM/GM foods. Ceteris paribus as the price difference between non-GM and GM food rose, people were more likely to consume GM foods. Likelihood of GM food consumption was higher in the middle income brackets. Consumers were willing to pay an expected premium of 19.5% and 16.12% for golden rice and GM edible oil respectively. In case of chicken, consumers seemed to pay a very negligible premium for non-GM fed chicken. Overall, it appears that GM foods may be acceptable in the Indian market. Estimating Food Demand in Rural China under the Perspectives of Agricultural Household Models AgEcon

We present in this study an agricultural household model that describes the joint production-consumption decision making of Chinese rural households under imperfect market. We conclude that the marginal value of a food product consumed is the sale price if there is a net sale for this food item; it is the purchase price if there is a net purchase; and it is the shadow price if there is no purchase or sale. A preliminary empirical food estimation analysis confirms that it provides superior demand estimates to use these "effective prices" rather than traditionally used purchase prices or weighted average of sale and purchase prices in rural food demand analysis in less developed countries (LDCs).
