In the past two decades, the Argo Program has collected, processed, and distributed over two million vertical profiles of temperature and salinity from the upper two kilometers of the global ocean. A similar number of subsurface velocity observations near 1,000 dbar have also been collected. This paper recounts the history of the global Argo Program, from its aspiration arising out of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, to the development and implementation of its instrumentation and telecommunication systems, and the various technical problems encountered. We describe the Argo data system and its quality control procedures, and the gradual changes in the vertical resolution and spatial coverage of Argo data from 1999 to 2019. The accuracies of the... |

Currently, observations from low-Earth orbit (LEO) ocean color sensors represent one of the most used tools to study surface optical and biogeochemical properties of the ocean. LEO observations are available at daily temporal resolution, and are often combined into weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual averages in order to obtain sufficient spatial coverage. Indeed, daily satellite maps of the main oceanic variables (e.g., surface phytoplankton chlorophyll-a) generally have many data gaps, mainly due to clouds, which can be filled using either Optimal Interpolation or the Empirical Orthogonal Functions approach. Such interpolations, however, may introduce large uncertainties in the final product. Here, our goal is to quantify the potential benefits of... |

Characterizing phytoplankton distribution and dynamics in the world's open oceans requires in situ observations over a broad range of space and time scales. In addition to temperature/salinity measurements, Biogeochemical-Argo (BGC-Argo) profiling floats are capable of autonomously observing at high-frequency bio-optical properties such as the chlorophyll fluorescence, a proxy of the chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), the particulate backscattering coefficient (b(bp)), a proxy of the stock of particulate organic carbon, and the light available for photosynthesis. We analyzed an unprecedented BGC-Argo database of more than 8,500 multivariable profiles collected in various oceanic conditions, from subpolar waters to subtropical gyres. Our objective is to... |

In the context of the Bio-Argo program, a significant number of "new" biogeochemical variables are now candidate to be delivered through the Argo data stream. These variables are nitrate concentration, dissolved oxygen concentration, Chla concentration, backscattering coefficient, pH and radiometric data. Compared to the core Argo mission (P, T and 5), this diversity of new variable forces the community of biogeochemists to be very careful with respect to data management. Since three years, the community of biogeochemists thus actively participate to Argo data management meetings, in order to develop procedure for biogeochemical data compliant with Argo requirements regarding distribution policy, format, quality assessment and documentation. We illustrate... |

Identification of oceanic regions characterized by particular optical properties is extremely important for ocean color applications. The departure from globally established bio-optical models introduces uncertainties in the retrieval of biogeochemical quantities from satellite observations. Thanks to an array of 105 Biogeochemical Argo floats acquiring almost daily downward irradiance measurements at selected wavelengths in the UV and blue region of the spectrum, we re-examined the natural variability of the spectral diffuse attenuation coefficients, Kd(λ), among the world's oceans and compared them to previously established bio-optical models. The analysis of 2847 measurements of Kd(λ) at 380 and 490 nm, within the first optical depth, provided a... |

In situ observation of the marine environment has traditionally relied on ship-based platforms. The obvious consequence is that physical and biogeochemical properties have been dramatically undersampled, especially in the remote Southern Ocean (SO). The difficulty in obtaining in situ data represents the major limitations to our understanding, and interpretation of the coupling between physical forcing and the biogeochemical response. Southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) equipped with a new generation of oceanographic sensors can measure ocean structure in regions and seasons rarely observed with traditional oceanographic platforms. Over the last few years, seals have allowed for a considerable increase in temperature and salinity profiles from the... |

The Mediterranean community represented in this paper is the result of more than 30 years of EU and nationally funded coordination, which has led to key contributions in science concepts and operational initiatives. Together with the establishment of operational services, the community has coordinated with universities, research centers, research infrastructures and private companies to implement advanced multi-platform and integrated observing and forecasting systems that facilitate the advancement of operational services, scientific achievements and mission-oriented innovation. Thus, the community can respond to societal challenges and stakeholders needs, developing a variety of fit-for-purpose services such as the Copernicus Marine Service. The... |

Predicting responses of plankton to variations in essential nutrients is hampered by limited in situ measurements, a poor understanding of community composition, and the lack of reference gene catalogs for key taxa. Iron is a key driver of plankton dynamics and, therefore, of global biogeochemical cycles and climate. To assess the impact of iron availability on plankton communities we explored the comprehensive bio‐oceanographic and ‐omics datasets from Tara Oceans in the context of the iron products from two state‐of‐the‐art global scale biogeochemical models. We obtained novel information about adaptation and acclimation towards iron in a range of phytoplankton, including picocyanobacteria and diatoms, and identified whole sub‐communities co‐varying with... |

In situ chlorophyll fluorometers have been widely employed for more than half a century, and to date, it still remains the most used instrument to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration in the field, especially for measurements onboard autonomous observation platforms, e.g., Bio-Argo floats and gliders. However, in deep waters (> 300 m) of some specific regions, e.g., subtropical gyres and the Black Sea, the chlorophyll fluorescence profiles frequently reveal "deep sea red fluorescence" features. In line with previous studies and through the analysis of a large data set (cruise transect in the South East Pacific and data acquired by 82 Bio-Argo floats), we show that the fluorescence signal measured by a humic-like DOM fluorometer is highly correlated to... |

The deep ocean is the largest and least known ecosystem on Earth. It hosts numerous pelagic organisms, most of which are able to emit light. Here we present a unique data set consisting of a 2.5-year long record of light emission by deep-sea pelagic organisms, measured from December 2007 to June 2010 at the ANTARES underwater neutrino telescope in the deep NW Mediterranean Sea, jointly with synchronous hydrological records. This is the longest continuous time-series of deep-sea bioluminescence ever recorded. Our record reveals several weeks long, seasonal bioluminescence blooms with light intensity up to two orders of magnitude higher than background values, which correlate to changes in the properties of deep waters. Such changes are triggered by the... |

In the last ten years, a productive collaboration has grown between the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche (LOV), NKE and IFREMER to implement biogeochemical sensors on profiling floats. A first project (2003) was dedicated to the design of the so-called ProvBio floats (models A and B) that consisted of a PROVOR-CTS3 float instrumented with three new optical sensors: a Wetlabs transmissometer (C-Rover), a 3-wavelength Satlantic radiometer (OCR-503) and an “ECO3” Wetlabs sensor, measuring chlorophyll-a fluorescence, colored dissolved organic matter and particle backscattering coefficients (see First Success of ProvBio floats, Coriolis Letter n°5). Then, the integration of biogeochemical sensors continued in the framework of ProNuts project (2009,... |

The anthropogenic greenhouse effect and the associated temperature rise of the planet represent the main challenging issue for the Earth sciences of the next century. Marine ecosystems are a key component of the Earth system, as they modulate the transfer of greenhouse gases (mainly CO2) to the ocean surface. Moreover, oceanic ecosystems mitigate the effects of anthropogenic carbon injection into the atmosphere, via the so-called “biological pump”. Ocean biogeochemistry is hence confronted to a major challenge: the determination of the extent and efficiency of the climatic feedback of the carbon “biological pump” within the context of climate change. A new type of float, the “ProvBio”, has been developed jointly by Ifremer and the French company KANNAD,... |
