Associative Behavior-Based abundance Index (ABBI) for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer

This paper presents an associative behavior-based abundance index (ABBI) providing direct estimates of the abundance of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) based on their associative behavior around floating objects (FOBs). Considering the associative dynamics of small yellowfin tuna individuals (<10 kg) at FOBs through residence and absence times at FOBs, together with acoustic data obtained from fisher’s echosounder buoys, the ABBI index is derived for yellowfin tuna in the western Indian Ocean over the period 2013-2019. This index accounts for both the FOB-associated and free-swimming components of the tuna populations, as well as for the effects of increasing numbers of FOBs on each component.

The concept of the Ecosystem Approach has entered the fishery harvesting discussions both from fishery perspectives (Reykjavik Declaration; FAO 2003 Annex to the Code of Conduct and from the principles of the Ecosystem Approach adopted by the CBD in 1995. Both perspectives establish the need to maintain ecosystem structure and functioning, whether for sustainable use of biodiversity (CBD) or simply to keep exploited ecosystems healthy and productive (fisheries). Banning is not enough: The complexities of oceanic shark management by tuna regional fisheries management organizations ArchiMer

Recently, declining populations of several pelagic shark species have led to global conservation concerns surrounding this group. As a result, a series of species-specific banning measures have been implemented by Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) in charge of tuna fisheries, which include retention bans, finning bans and trading bans. There are both positive and negative aspects to most management measures, but generally, the positive aspects outweigh the negatives, ensuring the measure is beneficial to the resource and its users in the long term. Elasmobranchs, an important component of the French tropical tuna purse seine fishery by-catch, are currently thrown back into the sea. The silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis is the primary elasmobranch bycatch in the global tuna purse seine fishery using fish aggregating devices (FADs). Information on the associative behaviour of this species with floating objects remains limited. Here the use of various electronic tags provided important new insight into this behaviour. Thirty-eight juvenile silky sharks (69 to 116 cm total length; TL) were tagged with acoustic tags at 9 drifting FADs equipped with satellite-linked acoustic receivers in the western Indian Ocean (total monitoring = 154 d). Fine-scale vertical movements of oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) ArchiMer

Time series of depth data, obtained for 6 oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) tagged with pop-up satellite archival tags, were analyzed in detail. The aim was to improve our knowledge of the vertical behavior of this species. Individuals were tagged in the Atlantic Ocean (n=5) and Indian Ocean (n=1) between 2011 and 2012. Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries. We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Vertical habitat limits were estimated based on temperature and dissolved oxygen at capture data. We then studied tuna-micronekton relationships to better understand how tuna occupy the pelagic space, At a regional scale, tunas were more abundant in areas rich in prey with favourable hydrological conditions.
