A Methodological Framework to Estimate the Site Fidelity of Tagged Animals Using Passive Acoustic Telemetry ArchiMer
Capello, Manuela; Robert, Marianne; Soria, Marc; Potin, Gael; Itano, David; Holland, Kim; Deneubourg, Jean-louis; Dagorn, Laurent.
The rapid expansion of the use of passive acoustic telemetry technologies has facilitated unprecedented opportunities for studying the behavior of marine organisms in their natural environment. This technological advance would greatly benefit from the parallel development of dedicated methodologies accounting for the variety of timescales involved in the remote detection of tagged animals related to instrumental, environmental and behavioral events. In this paper we propose a methodological framework for estimating the site fidelity (“residence times”) of acoustic tagged animals at different timescales, based on the survival analysis of continuous residence times recorded at multiple receivers. Our approach is validated through modeling and applied on two...

A model based on data from echosounder buoys to estimate biomass of fish species associated with fish aggregating devices ArchiMer
Lopezi, Jon; Moreno, Gala; Boyra, Guillermo; Dagorn, Laurent.
Most of the drifting fish aggregating devices (DFADs) used in industrial tropical tuna purse seine fisheries are equipped with satellite linked echosounder buoys, which provide fishing crews with remote, accurate geolocation information and rough estimates of FAD-associated tuna biomass. One of the most common brands of echosounder buoys (SATLINK, Madrid, Spain) is currently calibrated for the target strength of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and provides biomass data on. that species. Using that brand of echosounder buoy, we developed a new behavior-based approach to provide relative biomass estimates and a remote target classification of fish aggregations at FADs. The model is based on current knowledge of the vertical distribution of the main fish...

Aggregation processes of Tuna under Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (DFADS) assessed through fisher's echosounder buoy in the Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Baidai, Y; Dagorn, Laurent; Amande, Mj; Gaertner, Daniel; Capello, Manuela.
The aggregative behavior of tuna around floating object is widely exploited by the industrial purse-seine fishery, which deploy thousands of floating objects each year in all oceans in order to improve their catches. These fish aggregating devices (FADs) are generally equipped with echosounder buoys that can collect acoustic data, conferring to these devices the status of privileged observation platforms for the fish communities that aggregate. Using a classification model based on supervised learning algorithms trained on M3I buoy data, we were able to translate the acoustic data collected along the trajectories of 5748 drifting FADs newly deployed between 2016 and 2018 in the Indian Ocean into presence or absence of tuna aggregation. Analysis of the...

Aggregative capacity of experimental anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (aFADs) in Northeastern Brazil revealed through electronic tagging data ArchiMer
Véras, Luísa Queiroz; Capello, Manuela; Forget, Fabien; Tolotti, Mariana Travassos; Véras, Drausio Pinheiro; Dagorn, Laurent; Hazin, Fábio Hissa.
Catches of pelagic fish associated to anchored Fish Aggregating Devices have been responsible for increases in income, fish consumption, and even cultural identity of artisanal fishing communities in many developing countries worldwide. Nonetheless, in Brazil, aFAD fishing is still poorly developed and studied. In this experiment, FADs were anchored offshore the city of Recife (Northeastern Brazil) to investigate the potential of moored buoys in the aggregation of commercially important pelagic species near the coast, as an alternative fishing site for artisanal fishers. The behavior of acoustically tagged fish was investigated to assess whether they were attracted to the FADs and how long they remained associated to them. The results indicated that,...

Association dynamics of tuna and purse seine bycatch species with drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs) in the tropical eastern Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Tolotti, Mariana Travassos; Forget, Fabien; Capello, Manuela; Filmalter, John David; Hutchinson, Melanie; Itano, David; Holland, Kim; Dagorn, Laurent.
Several pelagic fish species are known to regularly associate with floating objects in the open ocean, including commercially valuable species. The tuna purse seine industry takes advantage of this associative behavior and has been increasingly deploying free-drifting man-made floating objects, also known as fish aggregating devices (FADs). Using passive acoustic telemetry, this study describes the associative dynamics of the main targeted tropical tuna species (Thunnus albacares, T. obesus and Katsuwonus pelamis), as well as three major bycatch species, silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis), rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata) and oceanic triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata). Short-term excursions away from the FADs were frequently performed by all tuna...

Associative Behavior-Based abundance Index (ABBI) for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Baidai, Yannick; Dagorn, Laurent; Gaertner, Daniel; Denebourg, Jean-louis; Duparc, Antoine; Floch, Laurent; Capello, Manuela.
This paper presents an associative behavior-based abundance index (ABBI) providing direct estimates of the abundance of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) based on their associative behavior around floating objects (FOBs). Considering the associative dynamics of small yellowfin tuna individuals (<10 kg) at FOBs through residence and absence times at FOBs, together with acoustic data obtained from fisher’s echosounder buoys, the ABBI index is derived for yellowfin tuna in the western Indian Ocean over the period 2013-2019. This index accounts for both the FOB-associated and free-swimming components of the tuna populations, as well as for the effects of increasing numbers of FOBs on each component.

The concept of the Ecosystem Approach has entered the fishery harvesting discussions both from fishery perspectives (Reykjavik Declaration; FAO 2003 Annex to the Code of Conduct and from the principles of the Ecosystem Approach adopted by the CBD in 1995. Both perspectives establish the need to maintain ecosystem structure and functioning, whether for sustainable use of biodiversity (CBD) or simply to keep exploited ecosystems healthy and productive (fisheries). In response, the “Balanced Harvest” (BH) concept was suggested by a group of scientists brought together by the IUCN Fisheries Experts Group during the CBD CoP 10 in 2010. The meeting and the BH concept as consolidated there highlighted some of the collateral ecological effects of current fishing...

Banning is not enough: The complexities of oceanic shark management by tuna regional fisheries management organizations ArchiMer
Travassos Tolotti, Mariana; Filmalter, John David; Bach, Pascal; Travassos, Paulo; Seret, Bernard; Dagorn, Laurent.
Recently, declining populations of several pelagic shark species have led to global conservation concerns surrounding this group. As a result, a series of species-specific banning measures have been implemented by Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) in charge of tuna fisheries, which include retention bans, finning bans and trading bans. There are both positive and negative aspects to most management measures, but generally, the positive aspects outweigh the negatives, ensuring the measure is beneficial to the resource and its users in the long term. Banning measures are a good first step towards the conservation of pelagic shark species, especially since they improve conservation awareness among fishers, managers and the public. Measures...

Collaborative research: Development of a manual on elasmobranch handling and release best practices in tropical tuna purse-seine fisheries ArchiMer
Poisson, Francois; Seret, Bernard; Vernet, Anne-lise; Goujon, Michel; Dagorn, Laurent.
The reduction of by-catch mortality is an objective of the ecosystem approach to fisheries and a request made by consumers. Elasmobranchs, an important component of the French tropical tuna purse seine fishery by-catch, are currently thrown back into the sea. Fishers interact with various types of elasmobranchs that range widely in size, weight and shape, and could pose various degrees of danger to the crew. A diversity of discarding practices within the fleet were reported, some practices were considered suitable, others needed to be adapted and improved and others simply had to be banned. The majority of the crews were likely to improve their handling practices if they were presented with practical suggestions that were quick and easy. Combining...

Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) are known to preferentially occupy the Surface mixed layer above the thermocline and it has been Suggested that they are physiologically restricted to water lerriperatt.11-CS no more than 8 degrees C colder than Surface waters. However, we here report for dive data acquired from a large yellowfin tuna which demonstrate for the first time that this species is indeed capable of making prolonged dives into deep cold waters. A yellowfin tuna (134 cm fork length) caught near ail anchored fish aggregating device (FAD) in the Seychelles (Western Indian Ocean) was equipped with all internally implanted archival tag and released. The fish was recaptured 98 days later. As predicted for this species, this fish spent 85% of its time...

Drifting along in the open-ocean: The associative behaviour of oceanic triggerfish and rainbow runner with floating objects ArchiMer
Forget, Fabien; Cowley, Paul; Capello, Manuela; Filmalter, John D.; Dagorn, Laurent.
Multispecies aggregations at floating objects are a common feature throughout the world's tropical and subtropical oceans. The evolutionary benefits driving this associative behaviour of pelagic fish remains unclear and information on the associative behaviour of non-tuna species remains scarce. This study investigated the associative behaviour of oceanic triggerfish (Canthidermis maculata) and rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata), two major bycatch species in the tropical tuna purse seine fishery, at floating objects in the western Indian Ocean. A total of 24 rainbow runner and 46 oceanic triggerfish were tagged with acoustic transmitters at nine drifting FADs equipped with satellite linked receivers. Both species remained associated with the same...

Effects of habitat modifications on the movement behavior of animals: the case study of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) and tropical tunas ArchiMer
Pérez, Geraldine; Dagorn, Laurent; Deneubourg, Jean-louis; Forget, Fabien; Filmalter, John D.; Holland, Kim; Itano, David; Adam, Shiham; Jauharee, Riyaz; Beeharry, Sunil P.; Capello, Manuela.
Background Aggregation sites represent important sources of environmental heterogeneity and can modify the movement behavior of animals. When these sites are artificially established through anthropogenic actions, the consequent alterations to animal movements may impact their ecology with potential implications for their fitness. Floating objects represent important sources of habitat heterogeneity for tropical tunas, beneath which these species naturally aggregate in large numbers. Man-made floating objects, called Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD), are used by fishers on a massive scale to facilitate fishing operations. In addition to the direct impacts that fishing with FADs has on tuna populations, assessing the effects of increasing the numbers of FADs...

Fine-scale 3-dimensional movement behaviour of silky sharks Carcharhinus falciformis associated with fish aggregating devices (FADs) ArchiMer
Filmalter, John; Cowley, Paul; Forget, Fabien; Dagorn, Laurent.
The silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis is the primary elasmobranch bycatch in the global tuna purse seine fishery using fish aggregating devices (FADs). Information on the associative behaviour of this species with floating objects remains limited. Here the use of various electronic tags provided important new insight into this behaviour. Thirty-eight juvenile silky sharks (69 to 116 cm total length; TL) were tagged with acoustic tags at 9 drifting FADs equipped with satellite-linked acoustic receivers in the western Indian Ocean (total monitoring = 154 d). Presence/absence and swimming depth data were transmitted from the receivers. A subset of 17 individuals was also fitted with pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs; n = 13), or internal archival tags...

Fine-scale vertical movements of oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) ArchiMer
Tolotti, Mariana; Bauer, Robert; Forget, Fabien; Bach, Pascal; Dagorn, Laurent; Travassos, Paulo.
Time series of depth data, obtained for 6 oceanic whitetip sharks (Carcharhinus longimanus) tagged with pop-up satellite archival tags, were analyzed in detail. The aim was to improve our knowledge of the vertical behavior of this species. Individuals were tagged in the Atlantic Ocean (n=5) and Indian Ocean (n=1) between 2011 and 2012. Deployment periods for these tags varied from 100 to 178 d. The sharks spent most of their time in the mixed layer, displaying the typical behavior of an epipelagic species. However, analyses revealed complex vertical movement patterns, including marked diel changes that reflect 3 different types of behavior. Results of the generalized additive models indicate that vertical movements were strongly correlated with variations...

Global comparison of post release survival of silky sharks caught by tropical tuna purse seine vessels ArchiMer
Filmalter, J; Hutchinson, M; Poisson, Francois; Eddy, W; Brill, R; Bernal, D; Itano, D; Muir, J; Vernet, Al; Holland, K; Dagorn, Laurent.
ISSF, in collaboration with other bycatch mitigation projects, such as the EU MADE project and the ORTHONGEL bycatch project, has undertaken tagging experiments to quantify the fishery impact on silky sharks (Carcharhinus falciformis) incidentally captured in the global tropical tuna purse seine fishery. Silky sharks commonly associate with floating objects in the open ocean environment. This phenomenon has been observed throughout the species’ cosmopolitan distribution range. Several other pelagic and coastal species also display this behaviour, but its prevalence in three tropical tuna species (skipjack, Katsuwonus pelamis, yellowfin, Thunnus albacares, and bigeye T. obesus, tunas) has led to the commercial exploitation of this behaviour. Industrial...

Effective ocean management and the conservation of highly migratory species depend on resolving the overlap between animal movements and distributions, and fishing effort. However, this information is lacking at a global scale. Here we show, using a big-data approach that combines satellite-tracked movements of pelagic sharks and global fishing fleets, that 24% of the mean monthly space used by sharks falls under the footprint of pelagic longline fisheries. Space-use hotspots of commercially valuable sharks and of internationally protected species had the highest overlap with longlines (up to 76% and 64%, respectively), and were also associated with significant increases in fishing effort. We conclude that pelagic sharks have limited spatial refuge from...

Hydrological and trophic characteristics of tuna habitat: consequences on tuna distribution and longline catchability ArchiMer
Bertrand, Arnaud; Josse, Erwan; Bach, Pascal; Gros, Philippe; Dagorn, Laurent.
We studied relationships between tropical tunas (albacore (Thunnus alalunga), bigeye (Thunnus obesus), and yellowfin (Thunnus albacares)) and their biotic and abiotic environments through simultaneous acoustic observations of tunas and their prey, experimental longline catch, and oceanographic data in French Polynesia. Vertical habitat limits were estimated based on temperature and dissolved oxygen at capture data. We then studied tuna-micronekton relationships to better understand how tuna occupy the pelagic space, At a regional scale, tunas were more abundant in areas rich in prey with favourable hydrological conditions. Inside such areas, at the scale of a longline set, however, the longline catches were maximal only when prey were not distributed in...
