The paper analyses the first results obtained in the framework of the RESECUSED project (MAST) whose objectives are the detailed analysis of the behaviour of sediments and bedforms of and on the Middelkerke Bank (Belgian Continental Shelf) and the study of the interaction between water movement, sediment transport and bedform mobility. The results include a preliminary analysis of the residual bottom load transport paths deduced from side scan sonar registrations, a map of the sandwaves on the bank, the first grain-size results of the superficial sediment and a study on the internal structure of the bank. |

This study is an attempt to interpret very high resolution seismic data, usually devoted to shallow marine surveys, in terms of very high resolution seismic and sequence stratigraphy at the scale of the reservoir. Seismic data are compared with outcrop-based observations in order to discuss the geometrical relationships between rock bodies, and the nature of the seismic reflections in terms of seismic facies related to type lithologies. Two high-resolution seismic surveys, using a sparker, were performed in the Dover Strait area some 100s of meters away from the Boulonnais coastal cliffs. The aim was to look to the 130 m-thick, mixed siliciclastic-carbonate deposits of Upper Jurassic age (Kimmeridgian-Tithonian) cropping out at the sea floor and to compare... |

Argillaceous petroleum source-rocks often show evidence of fracturing, which is considered to be an important factor for the primary migration of hydrocarbons. Several authors consider overpressuring of the enclosed pore fluids at great burial depths as a major factor for the generation of microfractures, through the mechanism of hydrofracturing. Various scales of fracture networks have been observed in Palaeogene clays which have never reached burial depths, greater than a few hundreds of meters. High-resolution seismic reflection investigations carried out in the southern North Sea have revealed large-scale fracturing patterns, confined to the London/Ieper clays. Equivalent deformation and microfracturing have been observed at outcrops on land.Field... |

During the ANTARKTIS VIII/5 cruise (December 1989 -March 1990), which was jointly carried out by AWI and RCMG, the seismic grid already available in the Weddell Sea could be expanded with up to 4100 km of high-resolution reflection seismic profiles. The Meso-Cenozoic seismostratigraphic model, originally defined on ODP Site 693 (Leg 113), was extended throughout the existing seismic database along the entire eastern Weddell Sea continental margin. This correlation effort provides some closer time constraints on different stratigraphic units elsewhere in the Weddell Sea, a.o. within the Crary Fan depositional system. A major unconformity (WO4) reflects important erosive and tectonic events at the Meso-Cenozoic boundary, which could be... |

In Palaeogene times, the 'Southern Bight' of the North Sea functioned as an intracratonic, shallow-marine, siliciclastic basin and accumulated a few meters of gently dipping sediment packages. A fine-scale seismic-stratigraphical model for the Palaeogene was formulated on the basis of a dense, high-resolution reflection seismic grid. In total 13 major seismic-stratigraphical units were defined, based on geometry and seismic facies characteristics. The seismic stratigraphy has been complemented with the results of four cored wells near the Belgian coast, containing a nearly continuous, 200m thick sediment succession of Eocene age. Facies analysis of these cores suggest that part of these sediments were deposited on a muddy shelf and part in a delta... |

The Bransfield Basin is a young active rift basin located between the northern margin of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands margin. Deception and Bridgeman Islands divide the Bransfield Basin in three subbasins, the western, central and eastern. Specific morpho-tectonic features and sediment fill differentiate each subbasin. The structure and geodynamic evolution of the Central Bransfield Basin, which is in a stage of incipient seafloor spreading, have been investigated in detail from a dense grid of single-channel seismic reflection data. The Central Bransfield Basin is dominated by two families of normal faults which are oriented northeast and northwest. The NE-trending faults define three graben systems that are roughly parallel to... |
