The decrease of microbial and nutrient inputs from the watershed has long dominated lagoon ecosystem management objectives. Phytoplankton biomass and abundance have drastically decreased for more than a decade and Zostera meadow have gradually recovered, expressing lagoon ecosystem restoration such as Thau lagoon. Do the progressive achievement of the good ecological status of the Thau lagoon possibly threatens the shellfish industry in terms of production and oyster quality, by reducing the carrying capacity? To provide answers about the right balance to be achieved between conservation and exploitation, a new numerical tool was developed to help in decision-making. We hereby propose to incorporate a Dynamic Energy Budget type shellfish production model... |

By the end of the 20th century, many of the coastal lagoons along the French Mediterranean coast showed insufficient water quality and degraded ecosystem states due to anthropogenic impacts. Among these, nutrient over-enrichment, resulting in eutrophication, has been a major concern. The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) has initiated public action to improve their water quality and ecosystem state using an approach rooted in restoration ecology. Here we analyze how this has been applied for the coastal lagoons in South France, considering eutrophication as an example of ecosystem degradation and oligotrophication as the corresponding trajectory for ecological restoration of the eutrophied coastal lagoons. Oligotrophication trajectories, initiated by the... |

In the context of WFD implementation on Mediterranean lagoons, work has been carried out since 2010 by Ifremer, Tour du Valat and IRSTEA (Onema and AERM & C fundings), to assess the relevance of macrophytes and macrofauna indicators for oligohaline and mesohaline lagoons (mean salinity <18 PSU). The question of the relevance of indicator metrics and thresholds for the "phytoplankton" biological quality element also arises, especially due to the confined nature of olgo-mesohaline lagoons. The objective of this study is to characterize the abundance and composition of phytoplankton on 5 oligo and mesohaline lagoons of the French Mediterranean coast (Scamandre, Crey, Charnier, Bolmon and Grand Palun). Analyses of accessory pigments (chlorophyll and... |

The poster presents the approach that led to the construction of a network of cooperation between managers and scientists for coastal lagoon management in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, its architecture and modus operandi, its achievements and developments over time. At the end of the ninety’s, eutrophication and lack of knowledge were identified as issues to enhance the management of coastal lagoons on the Mediterranean coast of France. In 2000, in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, scientists (Ifremer) and institutional managers (Regional Council of Languedoc-Roussillon and Water Agency Rhône-Méditerranée & Corse) joined their forces in building a network to address this need. The core of this network consists of an operational tool for the... |

The Thau lagoon is one of the largest Mediterranean coastal lagoons and it supports many uses such as shellfish farming and fishing, priority activities of the territory, and more recently recreational activities. Since the 1960s, the increase in anthropogenic inputs, linked to the sudden growth of the population, led to microbiological contaminations of shellfish and degraded status of the lagoon, with negative impacts at sanitary, ecological and socio‐economic levels. Since the 1970s, the considerable work carried out on the waste water system on the watershed has made it possible to restore the lagoon, which then began an oligotrophication trajectory, a process that has still few been studied in coastal environments. Subject to a variety of pressures... |

The natural conservation of coastal lagoons is important not only for their ecological importance, but also because of the valuable ecosystem services they provide for human welfare and wellbeing. Coastal lagoons are shallow semi-enclosed systems that support important habitats such as wetlands, mangroves, salt-marshes and seagrass meadows, as well as a rich biodiversity. Coastal lagoons are also complex social-ecological systems and the ecosystem services that lagoons deliver provide livelihoods, benefits wellbeing and welfare to humans. This study assessed, quantified and valued the ecosystem services of 32 coastal lagoons. The main findings of the study were: (i) the definitions of ecosystem services are still not generally accepted; (ii) the... |

Since recent decades, nutrient-related eutrophication, originating from agricultural use of fertilizer and population enhancement, can be considered worldwide as the main disturbance for coastal lagoons. Since coastal lagoons are very shallow and enclosed, their functioning is tightly linked to meteorological conditions. The aim of this study is to compare different rainfall levels and eutrophication response on coastal lagoons of the Languedoc-Roussillon (Western Mediterranean coast), subject to different nutrient loads from their watershed, in order to check the possibility to distinguish the effects of watershed management or rainfall conditions on water quality (waste water treatment plant improvement, decrease of fertilizer spreading). |

Oysters modify the planktonic microbial community structure by their filtration and NH4 excretion activities. While many studies have been conducted on this subject with adult oysters, none had been carried out in situ with juveniles. Pacific oyster juveniles (Magallana gigas, previously Crassostrea gigas) died massively all over the world since 2008 in relation with OsHV-1 infection. During mortality episodes, sick and dead oysters are not separated from healthy live ones, and left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences for the nutrient cycle and planktonic microbial components (PMC). The present study aimed to elucidate for the first time the interactions between oyster juveniles and PMC during a mortality episode. Innovative... |

For shellfish, the viral contamination clearly occurs in the first step of the process i.e. in growing and harvesting areas. As opposed to other foods, there is no proof that other routes (foodhandlers, aerosol), could be at the origin of the seafood contamination (Koopmans & Duizer, 2004). Most of the time, untreated sewage are at the origin of the presence of viruses in shellfish. However, direct contamination by ill people working in the growing area, has also been reported (Berg et al., 2000; Butt et al, 2004). |

In the context of the update of the inventory of water bodies of the Rhone-Mediterranean and Corsican (RM & C) basin, an assessment of pressures and impacts on the lagoons is expected during the second water management plan (2010-2015) of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Pressures due to pollutant inputs may have a varying impact on lagoons, according to their degree of interaction with the sea. The more exchanges with the sea will be high, the more export opportunities and dilution of pollutants will be high. The more exchanges will be limited, the more pollutants will accumulate in the lagoons, making then more vulnerable to inputs. The objective of this work is to propose, for the 28 lagoons (21 transition water bodies) of RM & C Basin, an... |
