Several unknown animal forms have recently been collected in the immediate vicinity of hot hydrothermal vents in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, forming a flourishing community of organisms. A tubicolous polychaete builds parchment like tubes around some of the hydrothermal vents. The tubes are covered with particles of metallic sulfur. This annelid is a new species, and is called Alvinella pompejana, new genus and species. The new sub-family Alvinellinae, erected to contain this new species, can be included in the family Ampharetidae (order Terebellida), in spite of several aberrant features. In addition to its morphological and taxonomic peculiarities. Alvinella pompejana also exhibits some remarkable biological features, in particular the existence of two... |

Trophic relationships in Bathymodiolus azoricus mussel bed communities on the Tour Eiffel hydrothermal edifice (Lucky Strike) were assessed using delta C-13 and delta N-15 signatures from 14 hydrothermal species. The nutritional basis of B. azoricus was also investigated with delta S-34. Faunal samples and environmental data (temperature, pH, total dissolved sulfide, iron and copper concentrations) were collected from 12 different locations on the edifice. Chemical conditions varied between microhabitats, and were all correlated to temperature. Carbon and nitrogen isotopic results revealed the presence of two, apparently independent, trophic groups. The first was composed of symbiont-bearing fauna (B. azoricus and their associated polychaetes... |

A morphological study of bacteria associated with the “Pompei worm,”Alvinella pompejana, collected from East Pacific rise hydrothermal vents, revealed four types of epidermal associations on the dorsal part of the animals: various single cells distributed on the animal tegument; clump-like associations located in the intertegumentary spaces; and filamentous bacteria associated with epidermal expansions, or inserted on the posterior parapodia. The bacterial morphologies were illustrated by SEM and TEM pictures and compared to bacteria previously described. The functional significance of these associations is discussed. |

Like hydrothermal vents along oceanic ridges, cold seeps are patchy and isolated ecosystems along continental margins, extending from bathyal to abyssal depths. The Atlantic Equatorial Belt (AEB), from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Guinea, was one focus of the Census of Marine Life ChEss (Chemosynthetic Ecosystems) program to study biogeography of seep and vent fauna. We present a review and analysis of collections from five seep regions along the AEB: the Gulf of Mexico where extensive faunal sampling has been conducted from 400 to 3300m, the Barbados accretionary prism, the Blake ridge diapir, and in the Eastern Atlantic from the Congo and Gabon margins and the recently explored Nigeria margin. Of the 72 taxa identified at the species level, a total... |

Defining biogeographic provinces to understand the history and evolution of communities associated with a given kind of ecosystem is challenging and usually requires a priori assumptions to be made. We applied network theory, a holistic and exploratory method, to the most complete database of faunal distribution available on oceanic hydrothermal vents, environments which support fragmented and unstable ecosystems, to infer the processes driving their worldwide biogeography. Besides the identification of robust provinces, the network topology allowed us to identify preferential pathways that had hitherto been overlooked. These pathways are consistent with the previously proposed hypothesis of a role of plate tectonics in the biogeographical history of... |

The objective of this study is to describe the chemical and physical environment surrounding the vent organisms at the Genesis site (EPR, 2640 m). The main chimney is colonized by Riftia pachyptila, fishes Zoarcidae and crabs Bythograeidae. The top of the smoker is covered with tubes of polychaetes Alvinellidae, the frontier zone by limpet gastropods. Temperature measurements and water sampling were made on an axis along the chimney. The environment was characterized using relationships between chemical concentrations and temperature to provide a chemo-thermal model of the site. Discrete temperature ranges were 1-1.6 degrees C in sea water, 1.6-10 degrees C among Riftia plumes (up to 25 degrees C at the tube base), 7-91 degrees C close to the alvinellid... |

In the framework of the deep-sea environmental programme BIOZAIRE (Ifremer-Total), colonization trays were deployed for 283-433 days at three sites along the equatorial West African margin: ZA at 1300-m depth, ZC at 4000-m depth far from the Congo canyon and ZD at 4000-m depth close to the Congo canyon. The experiments aimed at determining the influence of depth and local environmental settings on macrofaunal colonization patterns and organic carbon degradation rates. The trays were filled with glass beads and this artificial substrate was enriched with ground particulate organic matter in a gradient of 0%, 0.34%, 1.02% and 3.43% organic carbon. The highest rates of organic carbon degradation ranged, according to the duration of the experiments, from 1.59... |

The composition, biomass and diversity of the fauna in a Bathymodiolus thermophilus mussel assemblage colonizing diffuse flow areas on the SEPR is described and compared with biological characteristics of other hydrothermal assemblages. The spatio-temporal dynamics of temperatures over fine scales within the mussel habitat are characterized using newly-developed statistical approaches. Temperature data obtained from two adjacent habitats (a cirriped assemblage and a bare substratum) are compared. The results of the temperature data show that the mean temperature and the temperature variations were significantly higher in the mussel assemblage (mean temperature: 4.12 +/- 1.85 degrees C) in comparison with 2.40 +/- 0.14 degrees C in the cirriped assemblage... |

Whilst the fauna inhabiting hydrothermal vent structures in the Atlantic Ocean is reasonably well known, less is understood about the spatial distributions of the fauna in relation to abiotic and biotic factors. In this study, a major active hydrothermal edifice (Eiffel Tower, at 1690 m depth) on the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR)) was investigated. Video transects were carried out by ROV Victor 6000 and complete image coverage was acquired. Four distinct assemblages, ranging from dense larger-sized Bathymodiolus mussel beds to smaller-sized mussel clumps and alvinocaridid shrimps, and two types of substrata were defined based on high definition photographs and video imagery. To evaluate spatial variation, faunal distribution was mapped... |

Authors used photogrammetric and videogrammetric data collected at 13 degree N/EPR by the French manned submersible Cyana during the Biocyatherm and Biocyarise cruises to estimate the biomass of vent fauna. Two distinct faunal assemblages are associated with low- and high-temperature vents, Vestimentifera. The former, characterized by giant tube worms and bivalves, the latter by the so-called "Pompeii worms" (Alvinellidae). The cold vent biomass may reach 8.5 kg m super(2), far in excess of the hot vent biomass which amounts to 2.4 kg. Such a difference is linked to higher integrated symbiosis between primary and secondary producers in cold vent assemblages, hot vent secondary production being dependent upon separate ingestion/digestion processes. |
