A debate has emerged in the literature and trade press whether the adoption of Efficient Consumer Response (ECR), the supply chain management initiatives for the food industry, leads to improved inventory and financial performance. Using regression analysis, the financial performance for adopters of ECR is about 3 to 4% higher than for non-adopters. However, the growth in profit does not appear to come from improved performance for traditional inventory measures (such as inventory turnover, inventory-to-sales, or inventory-to-assets). Economic-engineering cost data and a simulation model was used to analyze the impact of sales area size and volume and equipment configuration on costs of custom application of bulk fertilizer by cooperatives. Fixed costs accounted for most of the custom application costs regardless of sales density or size of sales area for the relevant range of these variables in North Dakota. Increasing the radius of a sales area from 5 miles to 50 miles increased average costs by $2.79/ton to $32.26 per ton in Eastern North Dakota. Doubling sales by either doubling the size of the sales area or the sales density reduced average total costs by over a third for the smallest plant (500-ton storage) and over 40% for a 2,000-ton plant. The explosion of e-business activity presents many challenges to manufacturers, distributors, and dealers as they select a distribution channel for the delivery of products, services, and information. The expected growth in Internet sales by agribusiness firms is analyzed to provide insight into the selection of an e-business distribution channel. Agribusiness firm managers were surveyed regarding the application and perceived impacts of e-business activity on their firm's operations. The events of 1999 highlight the importance of the need for identity preservation (IP) of products that result from genetic modification. In April of 1999, Archer Daniels Midland Co. and A. E. Staley Co. announced that they would not accept product that was not approved for export to the European Union. By the time the 1999 harvest arrived, decision makers in the grain marketing industry realized the nature of their business had dramatically changed in just one growing season. In 2001, the dot.com bubble burst and U.S. e-commerce growth slowed. Slower e-commerce growth may signal changes in the use and perceptions of the Internet and e-commerce in agribusiness companies. Agribusiness firm managers were surveyed in 2004 to identify agribusiness use of the Internet and e-commerce and to solicit their perceptions about the Internet and e-commerce. The survey was developed from a similar survey conducted in 1999. In 2004, agribusiness firms were using e-commerce more with their suppliers than with their customers.
