The dispersal of Pectinaria koreni larvae released from the eastern Bay of Seine (English Channel) was studied using a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model which integrates tides, wind-driven currents and eddy diffusion, in order to examine the influence of environmental forcing and mortality on larval population dynamics. A broad agreement between predicted larval dispersal for two spawning events observed in 1987 and field data suggests that numerical modelling may be useful to analyse processes involved in the transport and the dynamics of larval populations. Larval mortality may be as important as hydrodynamic processes on larval losses for the adult population. Tides and eddy diffusion had some effects on larval dispersal, but wind forcing and the... |

We present an analysis of specific water masses fluxes in the Western Mediterranean Sea issued from a twenty years (1992-2013) reanalysis (MEDRYS1V2). Water masses are identified on the base of salinity and potential density properties and computes; the fractions of each water mass involved in total flux are computed under the hypothesis assumptions of mixing lines schemes. It was first designed in order to avoid rough truncations between water masses on the T-S diagram when using fixed thermo-haline properties thresholds. The method does not use the temperature marker due to its high seasonal variability in near surface waters (0-200 m) and we consider that potential density is a better marker to discriminate deep and intermediate water masses. The... |

A software called BathyMeshGridTools is proposed to facilitate the construction of gridded bathymetry data for hydrodynamic ocean models from global to coastal scales. These tools consist of a graphical interface written in Java and a computational core written in FORTRAN, which are freely distributed under LGPL and GPL licenses (http://www.ifremer.fr/bmgtools). The process of gridded bathymetry creation relies on three successive tasks : (1) creation of structured grid using graphic user interface for positioning, resizing and creating a hierarchy of nested model grids on map ; (2) data interpolation using a grid-to-grid interpolation algorithm for interpolation of Digital Terrain Model and kriging algorithm for bathymetric sounding data interpolation ;... |

Introduction and objectives of the study: Understanding the operating modes of the coastline systems requires the study of the hydrodynamics responsible for transporting the whole of the geobiological compartments of which they are composed. The idea of maintaining a close connexion between the physics, biology, geology and chemistry of the oceans is not new, and was for that matter the subject of a note in the first report of the International Council for the Study of the Oceans (ICSS) in 1902 (Sverdrup et al., 1954): ... it was seen from the beginning that the study of the physical conditions, of the chemical nature of the ocean waters, of the currents, etc., was of the greatest importance for the investigation of the problems connected with life, that... |

The south-west lagoon of New Caledonia is a wide semi-open coral reef lagoon bounded by an intertidal barrier reef and bisected by numerous deep inlets. This paper synthesizes findings from the 2000-2008 French National Program EC2CO-PNEC relative to the circulation and the transport of suspended particles in this lagoon. Numerical model development (hydrodynamic, fine suspended sediment transport, wind-wave, small-scale atmospheric circulation) allowed the determination of circulation patterns in the lagoon and the charting of residence time, the later of which has been recently used in a series of ecological studies. Topical studies based on field measurements permitted the parameterisation of wave set-up induced by the swell breaking on the reef barrier... |

On the morning of the 31th October 2000, the Italian chemical tanker “Ievoli Sun” sank in the central Channel. Her cargo presented a risk of contamination for the marine environment and nearby coastal environment. From the moment the sinking was announced, Ifremer decided to implement, in almost real time, tools to produce and communicate environmental data. This paper presents the solutions chosen to develop: - a Geographic Information System to prepare maps, - a series of simulations for dispersion at sea of dissolved products - a general information web site structure (see http://www.ifremer.fr/envlit/surveillance/ievoli.htm). This paper will go beyond technical presentations of methods, tools and results obtained to take a critical look at the site’s... |

A coupled three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical model was developed in order to simulate the ecological functioning of the Rio de la Plata estuary and plume. The biogeochemical model reproduces the nitrogen cycle between five compartments: dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus and dissolved organic nitrogen. The coupling is tested in seasonal climatological configurations and for the particular year 1999. The circulation is forced with Parana and Uruguay rivers discharges, NCEP wind and tide. The biogeochemical model includes loads of inorganic and organic nitrogen from both rivers. The model reproduces the correct tidal amplitudes in the estuary, as well as the most outstanding features of the observed horizontal and... |

The rising interest in environmental and ecosystem dynamics have lead coastal oceanographers to not only investigate the “traditional” physical parameters describing the ocean state and its dynamics (e.g. temperature, salinity, currents, water levels in coastal areas), but to also account for the dynamics of parameters describing its biogeochemical components. To that end, MARS3D regional and coastal modelling system has been coupled to ecosystem modules (ECO-MARS3D, ECO3M) as well as sediment dynamics modules (MARS3D-SEDIM): sediment, nutrient and primary production contents can be considered as the lower level environment and ecosystem descriptors of the “biogeochemical” ocean. Early investments into physical and biological analysis at the regional scale... |

The hydrology of the Bay of Biscay was investigated using the regional ocean model MARS3D (Model for Application at Regional Scale). The simulated hydrology is compared to a set of various data encompassing monthly climatology, remote sensing SST CTD casts, and coastal salinity measurements. Special focus was put on the validation over the continental shelf. This paper reports that despite some misfits, the climatological hydrology and its seasonal variability are correctly simulated. Various statistics computed over the period from 1999-2004 highlight different aspects of the hydrology. The biases and root mean square errors (RMSE) remain very weak at all depths when comparing salinity (< 0.1 and < 0.6psu respectively). The predicted temperature... |

The Fukushima nuclear accident resulted in the largest ever accidental release of artificial radionuclides in coastal waters. This accident has shown the importance of marine assessment capabilities for emergency response and the need to develop tools for adequately predicting the evolution and potential impact of radioactive releases to the marine environment. The French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) equips its emergency response centre with operational tools to assist experts and decision makers in the event of accidental atmospheric releases and contamination of the terrestrial environment. The on-going project aims to develop tools for the management of marine contamination events in French coastal areas. This should... |

In order to favour the downstream from the European MyOcean service of large scale ocean forecasts to the national service of coastal ocean forecasts, studies of new methods improving the downscaling between global or regional ocean models and coastal ones are in progress. In the framework of PREVIMER and MyOcean projects respectively, IFREMER and Mercator Ocean studied in parallel the impact of the spectral nudging method. In the present work, the performance of spectral nudging was assessed using two regional hydrodynamic models: one of Mediterranean Sea and one of the Iberia-Biscay-Ireland (IBI) area. They are both forced by a coarser global circulation model (GCM) (PSY2V4/Mercator Ocean). This technique prevents large and unrealistic departures between... |

European directives (Water Framework Directive - WFD and Marine Strategy Framework Directive - MSFD) require a regular survey of several descriptors of the Environmental Status of coastal waters of the North-east Atlantic Ocean. Especially for the MSFD, which may concern large continental shelf areas where measurements are scarce, realistic ecological models can help assessing the Environmental Status. The ECO-MARS3D model of the pelagic ecosystem of the Bay of Biscay and English Channel continental shelf (NE Atlantic) has been developed for these applied purposes and validated against various types of historic data. This first paper deals with the basic biogeochemical version, which contains inorganic nutrients (NH4, NO3, PO4, Si(OH)4), three... |

In this study, the Lagrangian residual circulation in the Iroise Sea is estimated by a numerical method where the trajectories of the particles released in any given velocity field are calculated by a diagnostic tool. From their knowledge, the residual Lagrangian currents are computed over a whole number of M2 tidal cycles. The Lagrangian residual circulation is mapped from sea surface currents measured by HF radars and from the surface currents computed with the Model for Applications at Regional Scales (MARS), a regional 3D ocean model forced, here, by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) regional meteorological model. In order to overcome inconvenient space- and time-variations in radar coverage, the measured radar data are interpolated,... |
