PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been...

Characterizing, modelling and understanding the climate variability of the deep water formation in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

Observing, modelling and understanding the climate-scale variability of the deep water formation (DWF) in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea remains today very challenging. In this study, we first characterize the interannual variability of this phenomenon by a thorough reanalysis of observations in order to establish reference time series. These quantitative indicators include 31 observed years for the yearly maximum mixed layer depth over the period 1980–2013 and a detailed multi-indicator description of the period 2007–2013. Then a 1980–2013 hindcast simulation is performed with a fully-coupled regional climate system model including the high-resolution representation of the regional atmosphere, ocean, land-surface and rivers. The simulation reproduces...

Deep-sea benthic ecosystem collapse and recovery after an intense Dense Shelf Water Cascading event ArchiMer
Pusceddu, Antonio; Mea, M.; Canals, Miquel; Heussner, Serge; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Sanchez-vidal, A.; Bianchelli, S.; Corinaldesi, Cinzia; Dell'Anno, A.; Thomsen, Laurenz; Danovaro, Roberto.
Submarine canyons of several regions of the world are preferential conduits for Dense Shelf Water Cascading (DSWC), which quickly modify physical and chemical conditions while transporting large amounts of material towards the adjacent deep margin. Observations conducted during the last 15 yr in the Cap de Creus Canyon (Gulf of Lion, NW Mediterranean Sea) reported several intense events of DSWC. Their effects on the deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are almost unknown. To investigate the effects of these episodic events we analysed changes in the meiofaunal biodiversity inside and outside the canyon. Sediment samples were collected at depths varying from ca. 1000 to > 2100 m in May 2004 (before a major event), April 2005 (during a major...

Geometry, fractal dimension and settling velocity of flocs during flooding conditions in the Rhône ROFI ArchiMer
Many, G; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Verney, Romaric; Bourrin, F; Renosh, Pr; Jourdin, F; Gangloff, A.
Regions Of Freshwater Influence (ROFI) are of particular interest in a source-to-sink approach in terms of sediment advection, settling, and deposition in the coastal zone. An experiment was carried out in the ROFI of the Rhône River in February 2016 to describe the properties of suspended particulate matter (SPM) during a flood event. A digital holographic camera (LISST-HOLO, 20–2000 μm) was used to estimate the variability of fine sediment floc properties (size, nature and shape) formed in the Rhône mouth. An automatic image toolbox was developed to classify the different constituents of the SPM (as diatoms, bubbles and flocs) and to describe the diversity of floc shapes existing in the material in suspension. We estimated the fractal dimension (DF3D),...

Particle assemblage characterization in the Rhone river ROFI ArchiMer
Many, Gael; Bourrin, Francois; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Pairaud, Ivane; Gangloff, Aurelien; Doxaran, David; Ody, Anouck; Verney, Romaric; Menniti, Christophe; Le Berre, David; Jacquet, Matthias.
An innovative experiment was carried out in the vicinity of the Rhône River mouth in February 2014. An instrumental package, composed of a CTD, a LISST-100 type B (1.25–250 μm) and a LISST-HOLO (20–2000 μm), was used to characterize the hydrological parameters and suspended particles properties (concentration, size, composition, shape and effective density) in the region of freshwater influence (ROFI) of the Rhône River. Besides, a coastal SLOCUM glider, equipped with a CTD and optical backscattering sensors at several wavelengths, was deployed to detail the spatial description of the hydrological parameters and some particle properties. Large river discharge (annual flood ~ 5000 m3 s− 1) and strong wind conditions favored the dispersal of the river plume...

Research activities in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) within the 1997-2001 PNEC project ArchiMer
Raimbault, Patrick; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier.
The French national program on the coastal environment Programme National Environnement Cotier (PNEC) represented during the last decade a major support for the pluridisciplinary oceanographic research in the Gulf of Lion. During the second phase of the program, that lasted from 1997 to 2001, the main objective for this worksite was to establish an annual budget of carbon and associated biogenic elements to characterise the role of this region as source and the sink of elements. This introductory paper provides an over-view of the research framework and recapitulates the major scientific outcomes.

Seasonal variability of the advective transport of particulate matter and organic carbon in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Lapouyade, Agnes; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier.
Nine hydrographic cruises were performed on the Gulf of Lion continental margin between June 1993 and July 1996. These observations are analysed to quantify the fluxes of particulate matter and organic carbon transported along the slope by the Northern Current and to characterise their seasonal variability. Concentration of particulate matter and organic carbon are derived from light-transmission data and water sample analyses. The circulation is estimated from the geostrophic current field. The uncertainty on the transport estimate, related to the error on the prediction of particle concentrations from light-transmission data and the error on velocities, is assessed. The particulate matter inflow entering the Gulf of Lion off Marseille is comparable to...
