Some particles and viral damages linked to a strong cellular hypertrophy have been observed in the branchial necrosis of some Portuguese oysters contaminated by the Gill disease. The first one concerns the Gill disease in which the viral damages go hand in hand with a cellular hypertrophy, while, in the second one, the contaminated cells are associated with a deterioration of the connective tissue. These branchial necrosis associated to a virus have been observed again recently in some Portuguese oysters from the natural deposits of the Cadix (Spain) area. Moreover, the study of the summer mortalities (July 1977) in the oyster Crassostrea gigas Th. demonstrated the presence in this species of a virus of the same type as the one associated to the massive mortalities of the Portuguese oyster. The micro-organisms parasite the digestive diverticulum epithelium cells although not creating any damage that could strongly affect the molluscs. If not for its shape, which appears to be longer in the case of the Crassostrea gigas Rickettsia, the characteristics of these two micro-organisms seem pretty close and enabled their inclusion in the Rickettsial order. Numerous diseases have been described in Ostrea and Crassostrea oysters and especially in cultivated species of commercial interest. The lack of growth, but more often mortalities, are in most cases the most obvious symptoms of this supposed sickness. The consequences of these epizooties can be so bad that they can result in the disappearance of an entire oyster population from a determined area as for Ostrea edulis L. in 1920-1921 (Dollfus, 1922) on some coasts of Europe and for Crassostrea angulata LMK in 1970-1971 on the French Atlantic coast and especially in the Marennes-Oléron and Arcachon basins. These cases can be considered as extreme cases as most of the time, oysters are only subjected to a number of episodic affections, affecting the farms only...
