Do Sardinella aurita spawning seasons match local retention patterns in the Senegalese-Mauritanian upwelling region? ArchiMer

Sardinella aurita is the most abundant small pelagic fish in the Senegalese-Mauritanian region. The success of its reproduction crucially depends on the local circulation as this determines whether larvae reach coastal nursery areas favorable to their survival or are dispersed into the open ocean. As a first step towards evaluating sardinella vulnerability to climate-driven hydrodynamical changes, this study aims at underpinning how transport pathways drive optimal spatial and seasonal patterns for sardinella reproduction. We have used two estimates of the Senegalese-Mauritanian coastal seasonal circulation simulated by two hydrodynamical model configurations that differ in their forcing and topography. Nursery areas are determined by evaluating coastal...

Intraseasonal variability of nearshore productivity in the Northern Humboldt Current System: the role of coastal trapped waves ArchiMer
Echevin, Vincent; Albert, Aurelie; Levy, Marina; Graco, Michelle; Aumont, Olivier; Pietri, Alice; Garric, Gilles.
The impact of intraseasonal coastal-trapped waves on the nearshore Peru ecosystem is investigated using observations and a regional eddy-resolving physical-ecosystem coupled model. Model results show that intraseasonal variability over the period 2000–2006 represents about one fourth of the total surface chlorophyll variance and one third of the carbon export variance on the Peruvian shelf. Evidence is presented that subsurface nutrient and chlorophyll intraseasonal variability are mainly forced by the coastally trapped waves triggered by intraseasonal equatorial Kelvin waves reaching the south american coast, and propagate poleward along the Peru shore at a speed close to that of high order coastal trapped waves modes. The currents associated with the...

Mesoscale SST–wind stress coupling in the Peru–Chile current system: Which mechanisms drive its seasonal variability? ArchiMer
Oerder, Vera; Colas, François; Echevin, Vincent; Masson, Sebastien; Hourdin, Christophe; Jullien, Swen; Madec, Gurvan; Lemarie, Florian.
Satellite observations and a high-resolution regional ocean–atmosphere coupled model are used to study the air/sea interactions at the oceanic mesoscale in the Peru–Chile upwelling current system. Coupling between mesoscale sea surface temperature (SST) and wind stress (WS) intensity is evidenced and characterized by correlations and regression coefficients. Both the model and the observations display similar spatial and seasonal variability of the coupling characteristics that are stronger off Peru than off Northern Chile, in relation with stronger wind mean speed and steadiness. The coupling is also more intense during winter than during summer in both regions. It is shown that WS intensity anomalies due to SST anomalies are mainly forced by mixing...

Subsurface fine scale patterns in an anticyclonic eddy off Cap-Vert peninsula observed from glider measurements ArchiMer
Kolodziejczyk, Nicolas; Testor, Pierre; Lazar, Alban; Echevin, Vincent; Krahmann, Gerd; Chaigneau, Alexis; Gourcuff, Claire; Wade, Malick; Faye, Saliou; Estrade, Philippe; Capet, Xavier; Mortier, Laurent; Brehmer, Patrice; Schuette, Florian; Karstensen, Johannes.
Glider measurements acquired along 4 transects between Cap‐Vert Peninsula and the Cape Verde archipelago in the eastern tropical North Atlantic during March‐April 2014 were used to investigate fine‐scale stirring in an anticyclonic eddy. The anticyclone was formed near 12°N off the continental shelf and propagated north‐west towards the Cape Verde islands. At depth, between 100‐400 m, the isolated anticyclone core contained relatively oxygenated, low salinity South Atlantic Central Water, while the surrounding water masses were saltier and poorly oxygenated. The dynamical and thermohaline subsurface environment favored the generation of fine‐scale horizontal and vertical temperature and salinity structures in and around the core of the anticyclone. These...
