This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut. |

Anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural by-products or wastes with complementarity characteristics is commonly used to enhance methane yield. This study firstly explores the possibility of co-digesting grass and forb species (white clover, chicory and plantain) differing in nutrient composition in enhancing methane yield. This was examined with two inocula (a cattle manure-based inoculum and a grass-based inoculum) in a batch assay. Results showed that co-digesting grass and forbs synergistically enhanced methane yield potential on average by 31 L kg−1 volatile solids (+11%) and reduced lag phase time by 0.8 day in the grass-based inoculum, but not in the cattle manure-based inoculum. Mixtures containing plantain showed more consistent synergistic effect... |

Inclusion of forage legumes in low-input grassland mixtures improves biomass production and soil fertility trough addition of nitrogen (N) from N2-fixation. The impacts of different mixture of legumes and companion grasses on the N production of the forage mixture have rarely been investigated under comparable soil and climatic conditions. We conducted a field experiment on a sandy soil at two nitrogen levels with seven two-species grassland mixtures: alfalfa (Medicago sativa), bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), red clover (Trifolium pratense), or white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and white clover in mixture with meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), timothy (Phleum pratense), or hybrid ryegrass... |

Adding certain forbs such as chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), caraway (Carum carvi L.) or plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) to grass-clover mixtures can further enhance or largely maintain the high productivity of grass-clover mixtures (Cong et al., 2018). This study aimed to screen varieties of three competitive forbs - chicory, caraway and plantain with high yield and quality performance, and to examine whether these varieties perform well when grown with traditional grass-clover mixtures. |

Wild flower strips is a common agri-environmental scheme used by farmers and land managers in order to improve biodiversity of pollinators. However, managed grasslands may also provide flower resources for flower visiting insects in agricultural landscapes. Botanically diverse grasslands on arable farms may support a range of wild pollinators, enhancing pollination services of crops. Intensively managed leys, on the other hand, typically contain only a few high-yielding, competitively strong species. One of the aims of the Multiplant project (2014-2018) was to test perennial seed mixtures targeted for bio-energy, feed protein and biodiversity, in order to develop multi-functional seed mixtures for grasslands. In the current study, we specifically... |

The objective of the study was to prevent the accumulation of high concentrations of mineral N in the soil during the drainage season by growing the presumably most effective catch crop, Italian ryegrass, undersown in barley as a green crop for silage on sandy soil. Further more, to examine the effect on two fields with different management of the grass-clover ley and therefore a different mineralization potential after ploughing. The green barley/Italian ryegrass treatment was compared with barley grown to maturity with and without an undersown conventional catch crop of perennial ryegrass. |

Cultivation of grassland presents a high risk of nitrate leaching. This study aimed to determine if leaching could be reduced by growing spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) as a green crop for silage with undersown Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) compared with barley grown to maturity with or without an undersown conventional catch crop of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). All treatments received 0,60 or 120 kg of ammonium-N ha-1 in cattle slurry. In spring 2003, two grass-clover fields (3 and 5 years old, respectively, with different management histories) were ploughed. The effects of the treatments on yield and nitrate leaching were determined in the first year, while the residual effects of the treatments were determined in the second year... |

Organic dairy farming is characterized by grazing cows in contrast to Danish conventional farms where the majority of cows are kept indoors. Cattle trampling reduces the finer macroporosity in the top 5-10 cm of the soil. This causes a low infiltration capacity at the soil surface, giving a higher probability of macropore flow from the surface. Rapid water movement through macropores bypasses the soil matrix, reducing nitrate leaching. We investigated how three years of cattle trampling in organic grass-clover fields could influence the risk of nitrate leaching in the autumn. The experimental part of this study was situated in Denmark on a loamy sand within a long-term organic dairy crop rotation trial. Experimental plots were irrigated with a concentrated... |

European agriculture focuses on increasing biodiversity. However, in highly productive temporary grasslands in grass / arable systems, the biodiversity is usually low. Three non-leguminous species have shown high competitive strength in temporary grasslands and ample possibility to increase biodiversity without compromising yields. In this experiment, we examined in detail the competitiveness and productivity of the three forb species: chicory (Cichorium intybus), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and caraway (Carum carvi) grown in different proportions in mixtures including traditional grassland species: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and red clover (Trifolium pratense), with fertiliser application as an additional factor. Dry matter (DM) yield... |

The quality of organic milk is affected by feed composition, and especially the high use of legumes has been identified as the reason for high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids and tocopherols in organic milk. Four different pastures composed of mainly white clover (WCL), red clover (RCL), lucerne (LUC) or chicory (CIK), respectively, were established to investigate the influence of sward composition on the milk quality of grazing cows. On three occasions during the grazing period (May, June and August), groups of 12 Holstein cows were grazing the pastures for two weeks. About 70% of the daily dry matter intake was pasture, and the remaining dry matter intake was a mixture of oats, hay and minerals (82%, 16%, 2%, respectively). The... |

Species-rich swards have received increasing interest due to their focus on ecosystem services, animal welfare and product quality. However, in high-yielding swards the proportion of herbs is often limited and there is little knowledge of their management. Seed mixture composition, cutting frequency, fertilization and grazing/cutting strategies were examined over 4 years in 3 experiments to quantify their effects on herbage yield and botanical composition. Inclusion of herbs in the sward gave similar or higher annual yields but swards established with 100% herbs depended on the presence of a driver species. The effects of management differed between species. Herb content in the sward was significantly related to the proportion of herbs in the seed... |

Outdoor sows are nose ringed to maintain grass cover. Intact pasture insures the sows possibility to graze and is also assumed to reduce the nutrient leaching. However, no evidence of reduced leaching from fields with ringed sows is available. Rooting behaviour constitutes an essential part of the sows’ natural behavioural repertoire. In organic husbandry it is an established aim to consider the animals’ natural behaviour, and by allowing nose ringing in organic pig production the natural behaviour of the animals has been prevented in order to consider the environment. The purpose of this experiment was to relate grazing and rooting activity of sows to grass cover and nutrient leaching. Three treatments were tested on 78 sows in total: 1: sows with nose... |
