The Earth's upper mantle is commonly depicted as a “marble cake” assemblage of a refractory component mingled with varying amounts of geochemically diverse enriched components. This depleted component controls the major element composition of Mid-Oceanic Ridge Basalts (MORBs). It has long been considered a fairly uniform reservoir, depleted by early melting and well homogenized by subsequent convective stirring. We present new Hf, Nd, Pb and Sr isotopes and trace element data for basalts from the center of the Lucky Strike segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Despite the limited size of our sampling area (1.6 km along-axis by 5 km across), these data show a large range of isotopic compositions (similar to that of the whole MAR). It has recently been... |

The aim of the project BATHYLUCK (BAThymétrie–HYdrothermalisme–LUCKy Strike) is to a) understand theinterplay between tectonism and volcanism along the zone of crustal accretion of a slow-spreading ridge, b) constrain the physical and chemical characteristics and temporal evolution of hydrothermal activity associated with a slowspreading segment and the active processes that occur within, and c) the effect of spatial and temporal variations in hydrothermalism on geo-microbiological interactions at the scale of the site. We propose an integrated, multi-scale study of the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field and its setting, that will be one of the first of such kind at a slowspreading ridge. This project is also a necessary step to establish a long-term seafloor... |

Properly assessing the extent and magnitude of fault ruptures associated with large earthquakes is critical for understanding fault behavior and associated hazard. Submarine faults can trigger tsunamis, whose characteristics are defined by the geometry of seafloor displacement, studied primarily through indirect observations (e.g., seismic event parameters, seismic profiles, shipboard bathymetry, coring) rather than direct ones. Using deep-sea vehicles, we identify for the first time a marker of coseismic slip on a submarine fault plane along the Roseau Fault (Lesser Antilles), and measure its vertical displacement of ∼0.9 m in situ. We also map recent fissuring and faulting of sediments on the hangingwall, along ∼3 km of rupture in close proximity to the... |

The MOMAR08-Leg 1 cruise combined three different scientific programs within the MoMAR project : - RECO (PI : P. M. Sarradin) : Ecology and environment - Graviluck (V. Ballu) : Seafloor geodesy - Bathyluck (J. Escartin) : Temperature and seismic monitoring The studies are concentrated on the Lucky Strike volcano on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 37°N. The volcano hosts a large hydrothermal site and overlies one of the only magma chambers that has been imaged on a slow-spreading oceanic ridge. The hydrothermal site has been the site of continuous biological and geochemical experiments for more than a decade, and will be the site for a future seafloor observatory to be initiated with the MOMARSAT program (pre-programmed for 2010). The main goal of the cruise was... |

Rainbow is a dome-shaped massif at the 36°14′N nontransform offset along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It hosts three ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal sites: Rainbow is active and high temperature; Clamstone and Ghost City are fossil and low temperature. The MoMARDREAM cruises (2007, 2008) presented here provided extensive rock sampling throughout the massif that constrains the geological setting of hydrothermal activity. The lithology is heterogeneous with abundant serpentinites surrounding gabbros, troctolites, chromitites, plagiogranites, and basalts. We propose that a W dipping detachment fault, now inactive, uplifted the massif and exhumed these deep-seated rocks. Present-day deformation is accommodated by SSW-NNE faults and fissures, consistent with oblique... |
