This article describes a farm level case study evaluation of a new beef production technology. The evaluation was undertaken as input into a technical research project aimed at developing farm level management strategies to facilitate use of the twinning technology when it becomes commercially available. The evaluation includes budgeting methods and a Linear Programming analysis. A risk analysis was also conducted in which key factors are varied stochastically and the resulting distributions of activity gross margins compared. The analysis shows that twinning could potentially improve the returns to intensive beef production systems, depending importantly on the level and variability of weaning percentage. |

Issues of long term soil fertility decline and sustainability are becoming more important for cropping industries in Australia. Helping to manage the level of soil fertility in this context is an aim of economic response analysis. This paper reviews the theory and methods used by economists to derive the optimal level of an input to be used in a production process. In particular, response functions generated by a crop simulation model are used as a basis for the analysis. The use of such models is becoming widespread in the research and extension community. A variety of methods are presented, in increasing order of complexity, to account for the real world characteristics of the production environment in this context. |

Cotton production in Australia is a high-value industry with about 90% of fibre produced being exported to Asia, primarily to Indonesia. One aspect of modern cotton production is the heavy usage of insecticide sprays to combat Helicoverpa insects. The high cost of sprays and the public view of the industry regarding its perceived impact on the environment have led to the development of integrated pest management strategies. The measurement of insecticide resistance within insect populations has also prompted the development of insecticide resistance management (IRM) strategies. The aim of the work reported here is to improve the understanding and adoption of IRM strategies by cotton growers. This is pursued by conducting an economic assessment of... |

A number of farming systems projects are currently being conducted in the north eastern cropping region of Australia. These are jointly funded by the grains industry and state government R&D agencies, and conducted by the latter with some involvement of private industry. The issues which were the genesis of these projects are basically technological (ie productivity-enhancement) to maintain or improve farm income over time, and environmental to redress natural resource degradation associated with the current system. This paper is concerned with the analysis of results from these projects to provide information which helps grain growers in making decisions. In particular, we aim to consider the issues to be analysed and the characteristics of the... |

This study aimed at estimating the costs and benefits of all beef cattle genetic improvement activity, across Australia, over the period 1970 to the present. The total cumulative Present Value (PV) of investments by industry, government and other agencies into selection, crossbreeding and grading up since 1963, and of imported genetics, was estimated to be $340m (in $2001 at a 7% discount rate). Using a suite of genetic evaluation models, farming systems models and an industry-level model, the cumulative PV of industry returns were estimated. Within-breed selection generated $944m; crossbreeding in southern Australia $255m; changing breed composition in southern Australia $62m; and changing breed composition in northern Australia $8.1bn. The benefit/cost... |

The decision to invest in pasture improvement raises various questions for the livestock grazier, with the most pertinent being about the potential returns and risks. In the high rainfall zone of south-west Victoria, researchers have trialled novel perennial pasture systems with the aim of substantially increasing on-farm profits whilst simultaneously improving environmental outcomes. Results from the Hamilton EverGraze® proof site have shown potential to greatly improve livestock production. Promotion of the pasture technology is the next step. Key to this process is developing information about profitability and risk regarding the decision to invest in the new pasture. To help meet this need a model of a representative mixed livestock farm system for the... |

Economic losses and costs associated with weeds in dryland cotton production are important, both for growers and for industry bodies when making decisions about research priorities and research and development funding. A survey was conducted to provide information on weed types, control strategies and estimated costs to growers. We used information from the survey to estimate conventional financial losses due to weeds, and as a basis for evaluating aggregate economic (society) impacts. An economic surplus model was used to estimate the aggregate societal impact of weeds for three production regions in north-eastern Australia. The annual economic costs associated with weeds were estimated to be $41 million, and the on-farm financial costs were $25 million.... |

Meshed with the bio-physical and economic dimensions of rural land-use is a social dimension. Understanding the social and economic dimension of rural communities is critical if agencies are to develop effective policies and programs to improve natural resource outcomes. In this paper, we draw on research of the Boorowa community, located in the south-west slopes of New South Wales, to help understand how social changes in rural communities are impacting natural resource management in the Boorowa district. This included: *Identifying the catalysts for changing land-use in the Boorowa catchment, *Presenting an effective and efficient methodology for assessing the social and economic impacts of changes in land use at the catchment scale, *Identifying... |
