In order to have a better understanding of recessing in great scallop, Pecten maximus and consequently the causes of mortality at reseeding, this study has monitored, at different seasons, the dispersion and recessing of different sizes of juveniles (about 15, 30 and 45 mm, called small, medium and large) after seeding. Moreover, the aim was to see when small spat (15 mm) could be seeded, and thus reduce the costs of intermediate culture. Three monitoring approaches were used together: (1) continual observations by remote video camera, of a defined area (less than 1 m2) containing 10 scallops from each size group; (2) daily monitoring of behaviour with divers along three bottom lines, with 20 × 1 m2 plots each and nine marked scallops per plot; and (3) the... |

Faced with the decline of scallop {Pecten maximus) fisheries and high costs of ongrowing in suspension, scallop seabed cultivation appeared to be the most suitable technique for European conditions. A three-year European Concerted Action supported by European Union and Norway (associated country) joined together four teams involved in scallop seedings : - IFREMER Brest / laboratory Molluscs, in Brittany (France), a national institute of ocean research (co-ordinator of the Concerted Action) ; - Connemara Shellfish Co-op, in Connemara, County of Galway (Ireland), a fishermen's co-operative ; - Seafish Ardtoe, in Scotland (United Kingdom), an institute provided by the fishing industry ; - Institute of Marine Research, in Bergen (Norway), a national institute... |

The Réserve Naturelle Marine (Natural Marine Reserve) of La Réunion island has been created recently (2007) for managing the coral reef of La Réunion West coast. In this area, traditional shore fisheries and spear-fishing are now regulated, controlled and under scientific survey in order to optimize the management of these fisheries, mainly leisure activities. This report draws up a first evaluation of the Reserve eco-guards monitoring in 2008-2009 over these fisheries, with double aim of : - improving the methodology : sampling strategy, terminology standardization ; data base setting up ; - collecting a data series for future evolution survey and comparisons with previous data (before creation of the Reserve). According to the collected data, the... |

This study deals with rearing methods, growth and mortality performances, and problems encountered by the oyster farmers from Quiberon Bay (2800 ha of leases) : it relies on a survey achieved in july 2001, about 18 oyster farmers, and 2 diving campaigns (july and october 2001) on 2 years old oyster batches from the same farmers. The analysed enterprises vary in particular by the location and depth of their concession inside the bay, but also by their rearing scheme : a majority favours seedings with 18 month old oysters or more, according to prices and availability of oysters supplies. The duration until marketable size and mean mortalities seem to have increased since a preceding inquiry in 1986. The main constraint, affecting priorly the south border... |

Monitoring of Crassostrea gigas performances, from two year-classes, during 12 years, in various French shellfish farming areas have revealed great inter-annual and inter-sites differences in reproduction, growth, mortality or quality of oysters (meat content, Polydora infestation...). The presentation attempts to highlight how a comparative analysis of existing temporal or spatial data on molluscs, water quality, geography or meteorogoly may help to better understand and manage shellfish ecosystems. The range of hydrobiological conditions (food availability, turbidity, temperature...) recorded at national, pluriannual scale, in relation to shellfish performances, enlarges the base of such relationship. However, undirect causative factors, either natural... |

(subtidal on-bottom rearings), has been the year of the gestation for the RISCO-QB project (Risks in shellfish farming, in baie de Quiberon). Discussions with various potential partners have resulted in the project drafting with 3 main objectives : - estimation of the trophic capacity of the bay and adjustment of the rearing biomass, - impact of sediment nearness upon on-bottom technique and adjustment of the rearing practices, - appraisal of the impact of these 2 factors (trophic capacity and sediment nearness) on the budget of the farming companies and their consequences in the management of the mortality risk. Concurrently with the project writing, pre-studies, mainly methodological, have been conducted in the bay since 2007 in order to investigate the... |

Since 2000, the exploitation of the deep demersal fish (200-700 m) with the use of electric winches has been increasing in Reunion island ; and this has needed a new appraisal of yields (CPUE) and individual fish sizes, as indicators of the state of the fish stocks. A first survey has been carried out at the first half of 2011, in order to set up the comparison with a previous survey in 2000 on the West coast of Reunion island. Drops of yields and sizes could be pointed out, attesting the overexploitation of the commercial species (Fleury et al 2011). This present report displays the results of a second campaign, carried out in the second half of 2011 all around the island. 32 fishing trips have been conducted which have permitted 251 fishing operations.... |

The wide range of data from the French Ifremer/REMORA network, collected since 1993 allow a global characterization of mortalities of 1-year old and 2-years old cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, that are cultivated in the main French oyster areas (Fleury et al, 2003), and thus a better understanding of the causes of these mortalities (Ifremer /MOREST project). The average annual mortalities on intertidal sites range from 10 to 20%. Most of the mortalities take place in Spring and Summer. 1-year oyster mortalities occur in Marennes and several sites in Brittany whilst 2-years oyster mortalities occur in the same sites and in baie des Veys (Normandy). In addition, 2-years oyster mortalities appear more variable according to different annual surveys.... |

Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to... |

Summer mortalities of young oysters have been studied in 1999 through the monitoring of a unique oyster batch distributed among 3 sites located from upstream of an estuary (Fort-Espagnol, Auray river) to downstream (Kerpenhir, Auray river) up to open bay (Men er Roué, Bay of Quiberon). Mortality and growth have been monitered in parallel with vitality indices, so as to try or identify periods of weakness of oysters. The spat grew from a mean weight of 3 g, in the beginning of May to around 35 g in November, without sharp differences between sites. The summer mortalities remained moderate (10 %) in the 2 most marine stations, whereas a light peak of mortality (15 %) was recorded in July in the most continental station. Any of the physico-chemical parameters... |

The scallop is a filtering mollusc that feeds predominantly on phytoplankton. It lives on loose beds of maerl, sand or mud, most often between 5 and 40 metres deep. The scallop likes cool (7° to 20°C) and well oxygenated ocean waters. It does not tolerate desalination or emersion out of water. In France, there are two very closely related species: Pecten maximus in the English Channel and the Atlantic and Pecten jacobaeus in the Mediterranean. These are frequent species in French coastal waters. But the many deposits, considerably exploited, have rather thinned out over the last 20 or 30 years. |

The objectives of marine protected areas (MPA), such as Reunion’s Marine Reserve founded in 2007, are (i) protect habitats (ecosystems) and resources (biodiversity) from increasing pressure due to a major urban, economic and recreational development; ii) manage uses and conflicts between traditional fisheries, spear-fishing, diving and recreational activities inside the coastal zone. These goals necessitate monitoring tools such as indicators and diagnostics. The PAMPA programme involves seven MPA including the Natural Marine Reserve of La Reunion (RNMR). It aims for each site to identify and validate indicators according to management objectives and group them in a MPA performance dashboard. This panel will help to visualize temporal trends and define... |
