A Gardener's Influence on Urban Soil Quality Organic Eprints

Gardens are hot spots for urban biodiversity and provide habitats for many plant and animal species, both above- and below-ground. Furthermore, gardens provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including carbon (C) storage and nutrient cycling. Although the soil is the foundation of sustainable gardens providing those ecosystem services, very little is known about the consequences of garden management on soil quality. Here we present a comprehensive assessment of urban garden soil quality, including biotic and abiotic site characteristics combined with land-use history and garden management information in a multivariate evaluation. Background: Stable soil aggregates are essential for optimal crop growth and preventing soil erosion. However, tillage is often used in agriculture to loosen the soil, which disrupts the integrity of these aggregates. Soil aggregation can be enhanced by bacteria through their ability to produce exopolysaccharides and lipopolysaccharides. These compounds stabilize soil aggregates by “gluing” soil particles together. However, it has yet to be shown how tillage influences the bacterial potential to produce aggregate-stabilizing agents. Die Aufbereitung von Festmist durch Rotte oder Kompostierung führt zwar zu erheblich höheren Verlusten an Stickstoff und organischer Substanz. Trotzdem schneidet aufbereiteter Mist in Versuchen besser ab als Stapelmist. Er versorgt die Pflanzen besser mit Stickstoff und bringt den Humushaushalt langfristig ins Lot.

Im Biolandbau ist das Idealbild eines gemischt wirtschaftenden Betriebes mit Vieh und Pflanzenbau weit verbreitet. Aus wirtschaftlichen Zwängen wird der Trend zu viehschwachen oder gar viehlosen Biobetrieben immer wichtiger. Untersuchungen der FAL und des FiBL im DOK-Versuch zeigen, dass sich, wenn die Bewirtschaftung nicht angepasst wird, die Reduktion der Hofdüngergaben ungünstig auf Ertrag, Unkrautbesatz und Bodenfruchtbarkeit auswirkt.

Bettergardens: Biodiversität, Bodenqualität und sozialer Wert von Stadtgärten Organic Eprints

Die trans- und interdisziplinäre Studie BetterGardens wird vom Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau FiBL (Projektleitung) und von der Eidgenössischen Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL durchgeführt. Sie findet in den drei Städten Bern, Lausanne und Zürich statt. Das Projekt wird von städtischen Behörden und dem Schweizerischen Familiengärtnerverband unterstützt und vom Nationalfonds (Sinergia) finanziert. BetterGardens untersucht die sozialen und ökologischen Eigenschaften von Gärten in der Stadt sowie deren Wechselwirkungen. Die Studie zielt darauf hin, wissenschaftliche Grundlagen für Gartenformen zu schaffen, welche Biodiversität fördern und Ökosystemleistungen in der Stadt erbringen. Biochar decomposition in agricultural soils of temperate climate Organic Eprints

Results › Carbon mineralization rates were highest in maize straw and lowest in pyrochar amended soil. › Pyrochar showed even lower CO2 fluxes than non-amended soil. › Initial mineralization rates of maize straw and hydrochar were higher in soil M, whereas in Soil D the pyrochar was decomposed slightly faster. › Hydrochar derived carbon was readily incorporated in the microbial biomass of both soils, pyrochar resisted nearly completely. › Comparison of carbon pools CO2 , Cmic and Corg at day 12 and day 205 shows that a stabilsation of maize feedstock of more than a double could be achieved with HTC and far beyond that scale with pyrolysis.

BodenDok – eine modulare App für die digitale Bodenbeurteilung Organic Eprints

Die Spatenprobe liefert wertvolle Informationen zum Zustand landwirtschaftlicher Böden. Trotzdem wird sie in der Praxis wenig angewendet. Die BodenDok Mobile-App will dies nun ändern. Die App des Forschungsinstituts für biologischen Landbau FiBL,eine Co-Produktion mit der Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW, unterstützt die Landwirte bei der Spatenprobe und weitergehenden Beobachtungen am Boden. Die App führt die Nutzer Schritt für Schritt durch den Beurteilungsprozess und liefert unter anderem Hinweise zur Bearbeitbarkeit des Bodens. Die App ist modular konzipiert, so dass vertiefende und innovative Untersuchungsmethoden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt ergänzt werden können.

Die Teebeutel-Methode ist simpel und weltweit anwendbar. Mit ihr lässt sich die Bodenqualität bestimmen. Manche Teebeutel bestehen aus Naturfasern, die man auf den Kompost werfen kann. Andere bestehen aus einem Nylonnetz, das nicht kompostierbar ist, da das Netz zurückbleibt. Genau dieses simple Prinzip wird neuerdings rund um den Globus genutzt, um die Vitalität von Böden zu untersuchen.

Im Ackerbau sitzt man in Sachen Bodenbearbeitung zwischen zwei Stühlen. Zum einen bringt eine intensive Bodenbearbeitung zumindest kurzfristig oft agronomische Vorteile, zum anderen birgt sie ein hohes Erosionsrisiko und beeinträchtigt das Bodenleben stark. Es gilt, einen Mittelweg zu finden, der eine nachhaltige und bodenschonende Bewirtschaftung ermöglicht, ohne die momentane landwirtschaftliche Produktivität zu reduzieren.

Sur invitation du FiBL, d’Agroscope et de l’EPFZ, près de 90 chercheurs de 20 pays se sont réunis en conférence du 6 au 11 octobre au Monte Verità à Ascona TI pour les 40 ans du lancement de l’essai DOC, qui compare les systèmes agricoles biodynamique, organo-biologique et conventionnel. Plus de 40 exposés ont permis aux participants de présenter et de discuter les résultats de leurs essais de longue durée et de partager leurs connaissances sur l’importance des différents systèmes agricoles pour répondre aux défis de l’avenir.

Crop yield and soil fertility response to reduced tillage under organic management Organic Eprints

Conservation tillage (no-till and reduced tillage) brings many benefits with respect to soil fertility and energy use, but it also has drawbacks regarding the need for synthetic fertilizers and herbicides. Our objective was to adapt reduced tillage to organic farming by quantifying effects of tillage (plough versus chisel), fertilization (slurry versus manure compost) and biodynamic preparations (with versus without) on soil fertility indicators and crop yield. The experiment was initiated in 2002 on a Stagnic Eutric Cambisol (45% clay content) near Frick (Switzerland) where the average annual precipitation is 1000 mm. Culturable Fungi of Stored ‘Golden Delicious’ Apple Fruits: A One-Season Comparison Study of Organic and Integrated Production Systems in Switzerland Organic Eprints

The effects of organic and integrated production systems on the culturable fungal microflora of stored apple fruits from five matched pairs of certified organic and integrated ‘Golden Delicious’ farms were studied at five representative production sites in Switzerland. Isolated fungi were identified morphologically. Colonization frequency (percentage of apples colonized), abundance (colony numbers), and diversity (taxon richness) were assessed for each orchard. The standard quality of the stored fruits was comparable for both organic and integrated apples and complied with national food hygiene standards. Decomposition study using tea bags Organic Eprints

Comparing the decomposition of green tea as a fast -decomposing material with rooibos as a material, which is difficult to break down, allows for the calculation of the tea bag index. This provides information on the capability of the soil as a living organism to transform organic residues back into plant-available nutrients and make some contribution to the build-up of soil humus. This technique is easy to apply. Place the tea bag in the soil and take it out after three months to see how much is left. It is fascinating to discover the result of our hard working little helpers in the soil and how this work is giving nutrients to a new generation of plants. Bodenfruchtbarkeit ist oberstes Ziel des Biolandbaus. Aber ökonomische Rahmenbedingungen setzen diesem Ideal Grenzen. Das seit 2015 laufende Projekt FertilCrop leistet einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis der Bodenfruchtbarkeit und liefert Instrumente, um diese zu erfassen. Zeit, eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen.

Warum eine Spatenprobe stechen: - Vor einer geplanten Bodenbearbeitung kann die Bodenfeuchtigkeit und somit auch die Befahrbarkeit beurteilt werden. - Längerfristige Veränderungen im Boden können festgestellt werden. So kann zum Beispiel überprüft werden, ob Bodenverbesserungsmassnahmen positive Effekte zeigen. - Den eigenen Boden besser kennenlernen. Durch das Beobachten von Geruch, Farbe, Wurzeln, Bodenteilchen und Bodenschichten erhält man eine ganz neue Sicht auf das, was sich im Verborgenen unter den Füssen abspielt.
