Gardens are hot spots for urban biodiversity and provide habitats for many plant and animal species, both above- and below-ground. Furthermore, gardens provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including carbon (C) storage and nutrient cycling. Although the soil is the foundation of sustainable gardens providing those ecosystem services, very little is known about the consequences of garden management on soil quality. Background: Stable soil aggregates are essential for optimal crop growth and preventing soil erosion. However, tillage is often used in agriculture to loosen the soil, which disrupts the integrity of these aggregates. Soil aggregation can be enhanced by bacteria through their ability to produce exopolysaccharides and lipopolysaccharides. These compounds stabilize soil aggregates by “gluing” soil particles together. However, it has yet to be shown how tillage influences the bacterial potential to produce aggregate-stabilizing agents. Die trans- und interdisziplinäre Studie BetterGardens wird vom Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau FiBL (Projektleitung) und von der Eidgenössischen Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL durchgeführt. Sie findet in den drei Städten Bern, Lausanne und Zürich statt. Das Projekt wird von städtischen Behörden und dem Schweizerischen Familiengärtnerverband unterstützt und vom Nationalfonds (Sinergia) finanziert. BetterGardens untersucht die sozialen und ökologischen Eigenschaften von Gärten in der Stadt sowie deren Wechselwirkungen. Results › Carbon mineralization rates were highest in maize straw and lowest in pyrochar amended soil. › Pyrochar showed even lower CO2 fluxes than non-amended soil. › Initial mineralization rates of maize straw and hydrochar were higher in soil M, whereas in Soil D the pyrochar was decomposed slightly faster. › Hydrochar derived carbon was readily incorporated in the microbial biomass of both soils, pyrochar resisted nearly completely. › Comparison of carbon pools CO2 , Cmic and Corg at day 12 and day 205 shows that a stabilsation of maize feedstock of more than a double could be achieved with HTC and far beyond that scale with pyrolysis. |

Die Spatenprobe liefert wertvolle Informationen zum Zustand landwirtschaftlicher Böden. Trotzdem wird sie in der Praxis wenig angewendet. Die BodenDok Mobile-App will dies nun ändern. Die App des Forschungsinstituts für biologischen Landbau FiBL,eine Co-Produktion mit der Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW, unterstützt die Landwirte bei der Spatenprobe und weitergehenden Beobachtungen am Boden. Die App führt die Nutzer Schritt für Schritt durch den Beurteilungsprozess und liefert unter anderem Hinweise zur Bearbeitbarkeit des Bodens. Die App ist modular konzipiert, so dass vertiefende und innovative Untersuchungsmethoden zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt ergänzt werden können. |

Conservation tillage (no-till and reduced tillage) brings many benefits with respect to soil fertility and energy use, but it also has drawbacks regarding the need for synthetic fertilizers and herbicides. Our objective was to adapt reduced tillage to organic farming by quantifying effects of tillage (plough versus chisel), fertilization (slurry versus manure compost) and biodynamic preparations (with versus without) on soil fertility indicators and crop yield. The effects of organic and integrated production systems on the culturable fungal microflora of stored apple fruits from five matched pairs of certified organic and integrated ‘Golden Delicious’ farms were studied at five representative production sites in Switzerland. Isolated fungi were identified morphologically. Colonization frequency (percentage of apples colonized), abundance (colony numbers), and diversity (taxon richness) were assessed for each orchard. The standard quality of the stored fruits was comparable for both organic and integrated apples and complied with national food hygiene standards. Comparing the decomposition of green tea as a fast -decomposing material with rooibos as a material, which is difficult to break down, allows for the calculation of the tea bag index. This provides information on the capability of the soil as a living organism to transform organic residues back into plant-available nutrients and make some contribution to the build-up of soil humus. This technique is easy to apply. Place the tea bag in the soil and take it out after three months to see how much is left. It is fascinating to discover the result of our hard working little helpers in the soil and how this work is giving nutrients to a new generation of plants. So kann zum Beispiel überprüft werden, ob Bodenverbesserungsmassnahmen positive Effekte zeigen. - Den eigenen Boden besser kennenlernen.
