Evaluating changes in marine communities that provide ecosystem services through comparative assessments of community indicators 5

Fisheries provide critical provisioning services, especially given increasing human population. Understanding where marine communities are declining provides an indication of ecosystems of concern and highlights potential conflicts between seafood provisioning from wild fisheries and other ecosystem services. Here we use the nonparametric statistic, Kendall׳s tau, to assess trends in biomass of exploited marine species across a range of ecosystems. The proportion of ‘Non-Declining Exploited Species’ (NDES) is compared among ecosystems and to three community-level indicators that provide a gauge of the ability of a marine ecosystem to function both in provisioning and as a regulating service: survey-based mean trophic level, proportion of predatory fish,...

Fishing impact and environmental status in European seas: a diagnosis from stock assessments and ecosystem indicators 5
Gascuel, Didier; Coll, Marta; Fox, Clive; Guenette, Sylvie; Guitton, Jerome; Kenny, Andrew; Knittweis, Leyla; Nielsen, J. Rasmus; Piet, Gerjan; Raid, Tiit; Travers-trolet, Morgane; Shephard, Samuel.
Stock-based and ecosystem-based indicators are used to provide a new diagnosis of the fishing impact and environmental status of European seas. In the seven European marine ecosystems covering the Baltic and the North-east Atlantic, (i) trends in landings since 1950 were examined; (ii) syntheses of the status and trends in fish stocks were consolidated at the ecosystem level; and (iii) trends in ecosystem indicators based on landings and surveys were analysed. We show that yields began to decrease everywhere (except in the Baltic) from the mid-1970s, as a result of the over-exploitation of some major stocks. Fishermen adapted by increasing fishing effort and exploiting a wider part of the ecosystems. This was insufficient to compensate for the decrease in...

Linking spawning ground extent to environmental factors - patterns and dispersal during the egg phase of four North Sea fishes. 5
Hoffle, Hannes; Van Damme, Cindy J. G.; Fox, Clive; Lelievre, Stephanie; Loots, Christophe; Nash, Richard D. M.; Vaz, Sandrine; Wright, Peter J.; Munk, Peter.
Previous studies have shown that four commercially important demersal species, namely cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), whiting (Merlangius merlangus) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) spawn in distinct areas across the North Sea. Based on two comprehensive ichthyoplankton surveys in 2004 and 2009, the present study uses Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) to delimit these spawning grounds using the distribution of recently spawned eggs, investigates their relationship to specific environmental conditions and examines egg dispersal during their development. Results indicate that presence/absence of early stage eggs is more related to temporal and topographic variables, while egg densities are closely linked with hydrography....

Strong fisheries management and governance positively impact ecosystem status 5
Bundy, Alida; Chuenpagdee, Ratana; Boldt, Jennifer L.; Borges, Maria De Fatima; Camara, Mohamed Lamine; Coll, Marta; Diallo, Ibrahima; Fox, Clive; Fulton, Elizabeth A.; Gazihan, Ayse; Jarre, Astrid; Jouffre, Didier; Kleisner, Kristin M.; Knight, Ben; Link, Jason; Matiku, Patroba P.; Masski, Hicham; Moutopoulos, Dimitrios K.; Piroddi, Chiara; Raid, Tut; Sobrino, Ignacio; Tam, Jorge; Thiao, Djiga; Angeles Torres, Maria; Tsagarakis, Konstantinos; Van Der Meeren, Gro I.; Shin, Yunne-jai.
Fisheries have had major negative impacts on marine ecosystems, and effective fisheries management and governance are needed to achieve sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation goals and thus good ecosystem status. To date, the IndiSeas programme (Indicators for the Seas) has focussed on assessing the ecological impacts of fishing at the ecosystem scale using ecological indicators. Here, we explore fisheries Management Effectiveness' and Governance Quality' and relate this to ecosystem health and status. We developed a dedicated expert survey, focused at the ecosystem level, with a series of questions addressing aspects of management and governance, from an ecosystem-based perspective, using objective and evidence-based criteria. The survey was...
