Distribution of honeybees on brood National Institute of Agronomic Research

It is generally accepted that caste determination in the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) is a result of differences in the composition of the larval food. It has been assumed that the glandular secretions of the nurse bee, and the type and age of larvae fed, may change as the nurse bee becomes older. Free (1960) recently investigated this possibility by comparing the distribution of bees of known ages on combs containing brood of known ages. We approached this question in a similar manner. The following is a preliminary account of some of our results.

Residual fumagillin activity in sugar syrup stored by wintering honeybee colonies National Institute of Agronomic Research

Experiments are described which show that the level of Nosema infection was satisfactorily reduced by feeling colonies in October with Fumidil B (but not with Nosemack). Other experiments show that syrup containing fumagillin, fed to colonies in the fall and overwintered in the colony, was effective the following summer in reducing the level of Nosema infection in caged bees.

The effect of the intensity of nosema inoculum on queen supersedure in the honey bee, Apis mellifera Linnaeus National Institute of Agronomic Research

Queen honey bees (Apis mellifera Linnaeus) were inoculated with known numbers of Nosema apis Zander spores and introduced into frame nuclei. Inoculations with as few as 1000 spores resulted in supersedure. All superseded quees recovered were found infected. The degree of infection, and the time wich elapsed before supersedure resulted, varied within a given dosage level. Some inoculated queens survived and were found free of spores, suggesting that selection for resistance to nosema disease is possible.
