A four-dimensional analysis of the thermal structure in the Gulf of Lion ArchiMer
Gaillard, Fabienne; Desaubies, Yves; Send, Uwe; Schott, Fritz.
The Theoretical and Experimental Tomography in the Sea Experiment (THETIS 1) took place in the Gulf of Lion to observe the evolution of the temperature field and the process of deep convection during the 1991-1992 winter. The temperature measurements consist, of moored sensors, conductivity-temperature-depth and expendable bathythermograph surveys, ana acoustic tomography. Because of this diverse data set and since the field evolves rather fast, the analysis uses a unified framework, based on estimation theory and implementing a Kalman filter. The resolution and the errors associated with the model are systematically estimated. Temperature is a good tracer of water masses. The time-evolving three-dimensional view of the field resulting from the analysis...

Acoustic Tomography in the Canary Basin: Meddies and Tides ArchiMer
Dushaw, Brian; Gaillard, Fabienne; Terre, Thierry.
An acoustic propagation experiment over 308-km range conducted in the Canary Basin in 1997–1998 was used to assess the ability of ocean acoustic tomography to measure the flux of Mediterranean water and Meddies. Instruments on a mooring adjacent to the acoustic path measured the southwestward passage of a strong Meddy in temperature, salinity, and current. Over nine months of transmissions, the acoustic arrival pattern was an initial broad stochastic pulse varying in duration by 250 to 500 ms, followed eight stable, identified ray arrivals. Small-scale sound speed fluctuations from Mediterranean water parcels littered around the sound channel axis caused acoustic scattering. Internal waves contributed more modest acoustic scattering. Based on simulations,...

ARGO based statistics for climate monitoring ArchiMer
Gaillard, Fabienne; Reynaud, Thierry; Von Schuckmann, Karina; Roquet, Fabien; Prigent, Annaig; Lagadec, Catherine.
The Argo array, by offering simultaneously global coverage and high vertical resolution, made the monitoring of inter-annual and decadal variability of the ocean interior possible. In the ARIVO project, we have initiated the production of gridded monthly fields of temperature and salinity using an optimal analysis tool and designed an iterative approach to combine near-real time and delayed mode data. The monthly gridded fields are averaged over time to produce the reference state needed by climatological studies, dynamical modeling and reconstruction methods themselves. Higher degree statistics such as variances and extreme values are later derived. Global indices (heat content, dynamical height) and corresponding error bars are also computed. Sensitivity...

Bay of Biscay’s temperature and salinity climatology : Bobyclim ArchiMer
Vandermeirsch, Frederic; Charraudeau, Romain; Bonnat, Armel; Fichaut, Michele; Maillard, Catherine; Gaillard, Fabienne; Autret, Emmanuelle.
The Bay of Biscay climatology is the synthesis of all the in situ data collected in the bay of Biscay area as far as 15°W, in the 20th century and mainly by IFREMER, SHOM, and WDCA. It shows temperature and salinity monthly information through the whole water column with a 1/10 degree resolution. The resulting atlas was produced by an optimal analysis which can reflect different scales: shelf and abyssal plain. A fine scale on the coast reveals all the local effects, including plume and upwelling, and a large scale on the shelf where a slower signal is obtained due to the large scale circulation

Gaillard, Fabienne; Billant, Andre; Branellec, Pierre.

CAMBIOS. Contribution à CANIGO (MAS3-CT96-0060). Volume 6 : Expérience CAMBIOS. Rapport des données de tomographie ArchiMer
Terre, Thierry; Gaillard, Fabienne.

Gaillard, Fabienne; Terre, Thierry.

Gaillard, Fabienne; Terre, Thierry.

Gaillard, Fabienne; Billant, Andre; Branellec, Pierre.

Gaillard, Fabienne; Billant, Andre; Branellec, Pierre.
CAMBIOS is the contribution of the Laboratoire de Physique des Océans to the european MAST-III program CANIGO. This report presents the CTD-02 dataset collected during the cruise CAMBIOS 98, in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. While CAMBIOS 97 was focused on the canary basin itselj, this cruise intents to cover a wider area, in order to establish a connection with the measurements performed at the same period by Canigopartners in the Gulf of Cadix and by IFREMERISHOM program ARCANE north of 36°N. During CAMBIOS 98, 68 full depth profiles of temperature, conductivity, pressure and oxygen have been collected. Bottle samples were taken at 30 levels. They have been used for calibration of the salinity and oxygen measurements...

Collecting and gridding complementary in-situ SST/SSS data for the calibration and validation of SMOS ArchiMer
Brion, Emilie; Gaillard, Fabienne; Petit De La Villeon, Loic; Delcroix, Thierry; Alory, Gael; Reverdin, Gilles.
Providing reliable in-situ surface temperature and salinity data over the global ocean within short delay is critical for the calibration and validation of the recently launched Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity Satellite (SMOS). The work presented here has been undertaken as a contribution to GLOSCAL (Global Ocean Surface Salinity Calibration and Validation), retained as one of the ESA CalVal Projects. Based on the Coriolis datasets and using In Situ Analysis System (ISAS) tool, a near real time analysis system has been developed. It provides gridded fields of sea surface salinity and temperature and the corresponding in-situ dataset. In addition to research activities, these products would be used to help the quality control of SMOS satellite data, and to...

Consistency of the current global ocean observing systems from an Argo perspective ArchiMer
Von Schuckmann, Karina; Sallee, Jean-baptiste; Chambers, D.; Le Traon, Pierre-yves; Cabanes, Cecile; Gaillard, Fabienne; Speich, Sabrina; Hamon, Mathieu.
Variations in the world's ocean heat storage and its associated volume changes are a key factor to gauge global warming and to assess the earth's energy and sea level budget. Estimating global ocean heat content (GOHC) and global steric sea level (GSSL) with temperature/salinity data from the Argo network reveals a positive change of 0.5 +/- 0.1 W m(-2) (applied to the surface area of the ocean) and 0.5 +/- 0.1 mm year(-1) during the years 2005 to 2012, averaged between 60 degrees S and 60 degrees N and the 10-1500m depth layer. In this study, we present an intercomparison of three global ocean observing systems: the Argo network, satellite gravimetry from GRACE and satellite altimetry. Their consistency is investigated from an Argo perspective at global...
