A geo-electric and gravimetric survey in the delta of the rivers Fluvia and Muga (Gerona), Spain Naturalis
Geirnaert, W..
In the delta of the rivers Fluvia and Muga, the Quaternary is hydrogeologically the most important deposit. It is underlain by Pliocene marls and clays. From geo-electrical soundings and bore-hole data a map with depth contours of the Quaternary-Pliocene boundary plane was constructed. Near the coast the Quaternary consists of two aquifers. One of the restrictions of the resistivity method is that the second aquifer is too thin in respect to its depth. Therefore only the formation resistivities of the complete Quaternary were calculated. By comparing the map of formation resistivities with maps of the clay percentage and the water resistivities in the Quaternary, prospective areas for waterwinning can be delineated. To the north of the delta, Silurian...

The hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of Lower Rhine fluvial plain Naturalis
Geirnaert, W..
The water-bearing strata in the area under study consist mainly of fluviatile Pleistocene. The base is formed by the marine Plio-Pleistocene, the top by the Holocene clay and peat deposits. The chemical composition of the ground-water in this aquifer depends on processes related to the geological history, not on the type of sediment. The most important of these processes is cation exchange, which occurs in two ways. When fresh water replaces salt water in the aquifer, an exchange takes place between the Ca2+ ions from the ground-water and the exchangeable Na+ ions from the sediments. The reverse process takes place when sea-water infiltrates a sediment with fresh ground-water: the Na+ ions from the sea-water are exchanged for Ca2+ ions from the sediments....
