70 hydrothermal sites were observed during the 23 dives of the French submersible Nautile (''Naudur'' cruise, December 1993), at 17-degrees-19-degrees-S on the East Pacific Rise. Large vent-animal communities are present around these sites. The zoological composition of these communities is the same as that of the communities at 11-degrees-13-degrees-N and 21-degrees-N on the East Pacific Rise. However, the distribution of the species on the sites is different from all the other hydrothermal communities; large anemone fields of several hundred square metres, associated with colonies of Bathymodiolus and Calyptogena, have been observed. Fresh lava areas seem to bear the most important biological activity. |

The fish fauna of thermal vent areas are identified by observations made from research submersibles and by captures. Two groups of fish may be recognized. The first group comprises fish living exclusively on the hydrothermal sites: These include Bythitidae, and Zoarcidae such as Thermarces cerberus , the principal species on the East Pacific Rise and Galapagos Rift. The second group comprises fish living in the vicinity of vents and in vent areas; its faunal composition seems to consist of species known to inhabit these depths in the Eastern Pacific. The biology of the fish in each of these groups is described and discussed. |

Seven new fish species have been found so far on the Pacific and Atlantic hydrothermal vents: the synaphobranchid Thermobiotes mytilogeiton; the zoarcid Thermarces cerberus and Pachycara thermophilum; the bythitid Bythites hollisi; the cyclopterid Careproctus hyaleius; one zoarcid fish; and one ophidiid fish. The characteristics of the 70 specimens collected, and their location in French and American museums, are listed. The results and observations made on vent fishes and fishes living around the periphery of the vents observed during recent dives (especially along the East Pacific Rise between 17 and 19 degrees S, the North Fiji Basin Rise and the Mid Atlantic Rise) are summarized. Previous literature on vent fishes is reviewed. |

Plankton bioluminescence measurements were made in the Almeria-Oran frontal zone during December 1997 and January 1998. Vertical profiles of bioluminescence, chlorophyll fluorescence, temperature and salinity were obtained using a bathyphotometer associated with a CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) probe on a rosette. The first leg of the cruise was a regular sampling along a cross section of the area. The second leg consisted of a repetitive sampling of twelve stations at each one of the eight sites located in different water masses. Hydrological data allowed a distinction from north to south of three different water masses: Mediterranean, frontal and Atlantic. The continuous sampling indicated an increased bioluminescence in the frontal zone, with high... |

The aim of the YOKOSUKA 91 cruise (October 1991) of the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 was to come back on two hydrothermal sites of the axis of the North Fiji Basin ridge which had already been explored by the submersible Nautile in 1989. This cruise gave us the opportunity to show that the hydrothermal manifestations vary a lot in terms of geology, geochemistry or biology during a very short time. A new site which is located in a deep graben of the N 160 ridge axis showed only activity along a fault system marked by sulphide deposits. |

69 new hydrothermal sites were discovered during the Naudur diving cruise. Dives were conducted between 17 degrees 5 and 18 degrees 40'5 on four segments showing marked contrast in morphology, volcanic, tectonic and hydrothermal activity. At 17 degrees 10'5, 17 degrees 25'5 and 18 degrees 37'5 the ridge has a dome shaped cross-section and is dominated by very active volcanic activity. Early widespread low temperature (<50 degrees C) diffuse hydrothermal discharge is followed by focused high temperature black smokers. At 18 degrees 15'S tectonic activity is dominant, no recent lava was observed, and only two of the 20 hydrothermal sites are active. At 18 degrees 32'5 recent lava representing a new volcanic episode partly covers the bottom of the graben.... |
