The purpose of this study was to analyze the cost structures associated with subterminal facilities. An economic-engineering approach was used to determine the construction and operation costs of four different sizes of subterminal facilities operating at three different plant capacities. Profitability of subterminals was determined mainly by the volume of grain handled. If a subterminal marketed enough grain, it was able to incur both decreasing average fixed and average variable costs. The larger subterminals were found to be more profitable than the smaller facilities indicating the existence of economies of size in both the fixed and variable cost components. Profitability can be dramatically increased given the availability of internal financing for... |

This report is based on research conducted under an Interdisciplinary State Project, ND1439 - Sunflower Oil as an Engine Fuel, with the Departments of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Engineering cooperating. Previous economic and engineering research directed at small-scale extraction systems, costs, and performance evaluations of sunflower oil-diesel blends led to further investigations covering methyl ester processing, performance, and costs. This report is a continuation of that research effort in evaluating the economic costs in producing methyl ester as an alternative or substitute fuel derived from vegetable oils. |

This prefeasibility analysis directed at the HFCS industry was carried out under a short-term turnaround basis with the intent of accomplishing two objectives. First, provide a current economic overview of the United States HFCS industry; secondly, to develop some major HFCS processing plant operating benchmarks in an effort to provide a timely informational base for state economic development interests. |
