Carbon footprints of organic dairying in six European countries—real farm data analysis Organic Eprints

Dairy farming is the largest agricultural contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. In this study, the carbon footprint of organic dairying was evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment, based on real farm data from six European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy and United Kingdom. A total of 34 farms were analysed. The assessment was carried out using an attributional approach with system boundaries from cradle to farm gate. In relation to dairy production, a functional unit of 1 kg of energy corrected milk was used. The results gave an average of 1.32 kg CO2 equivalents per kilogramme of energy-corrected milk with standard deviation of 0.22, which is consistent with recent studies. Comparative environmental assessment of three systems for organic pig production in Denmark Organic Eprints

Organic pig production has emerged as an alternative to the intensive conventional pig production in Europe with the animals confined indoors and often an imbalance between livestock and land for feed production and manure utilisation. The organic systems aim at improving animal welfare by supporting the pig’s natural behaviour (Hermansen et al., 2003), and improving soil fertility by better linking crop and livestock production from an agro-ecological point of view. The aim of this chapter is to highlight some of the prospects and constraints for the development of the organic pig production. Livestock rearing should contribute to a more balanced overall production of the farm, food safety (in a wide sense) should be enhanced, and animal welfare should be compared better to conventional production methods. Futhermore, the environmental load should be low. The success of the expansion of organic systems will depend on to what degree these different expectations can be fulfilled without resulting in too high premium prices of the products.

Food security of small holding farmers: comparing organic and conventional systems in India Organic Eprints

This study compared farm production, crop yield, input cost, and income in organic and conventional farming systems in three states of India: Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The results showed that organic farming reduced the input cost without affecting the net margin in all three states. Total food production was found to be comparable for the two systems in two of three states. While yield of rice and wheat generally was lower under the organic systems, yield from intercropping food crops was generally higher. The number of agro-ecological methods and percentage of farms practicing different agro-ecological methods were higher under organic systems than conventional systems. Full or partial outdoor rearing of slaughter pigs – effects on performance, carcass quality and nutrient load Organic Eprints

An experiment with slaughter pigs from weaning to slaughter including five treatments and five replicates was carried out at the Danish organic experimental station, Rugballegård. Treatments included full or partial outdoor rearing of the pigs, and the replicates covered the seasonal effects. Pigs fed ad libitum indoors had a significantly lower feed consumption (5 MJ ME /kg gain), a lower lean percentage (2.3% points), and a higher backfat depth (1.1 mm, P < 0.05) than pigs fed ad libitum outdoors. Compared with outdoor pigs fed ad libitum, restricted feeding outdoors resulted in a significantly lower daily gain (107 g), a lower feed consumption (6.3 MJ ME/kg gain), higher lean percentage (2.1% points), and a reduced backfat (1.8 mm) (P <0.001). Growth and sensory characteristics of alternative genotype broilers reared in organic orchards Organic Eprints

The effects of age, sex and genotype on growth and sensory characteristics in organically produced broilers, when kept considerably longer before slaughtering, were examined. A total of 450 birds consisting of three genotypes, Light Sussex, New Hampshire, and the commercial strain I 657 were inserted at Fejoe Research Orchard. Half the birds were slaughtered at 91 days of age and half at 120 days of age. I 657 was significantly heavier compared to the slower growing breeds and Light Sussex was significantly heavier than New Hampshire. Growth and sensory characteristics of organically reared broilers differing in strain, sex and age at slaughter Organic Eprints

The effects of strain, sex and age on live weight, slaughter weight and sensory characteristics of organically reared broilers in orchards are presented. A total of 450 broilers of three different strains (I 657, Light Sussex, New Hampshire) were reared in an organic research orchard. Half of each strain was slaughtered at 91 days and the other half at 120 days. All broilers were weighed and a clinical welfare assessment was made at slaughter. A trained sensory panel evaluated the breast meat in relation to flavour, smell and texture characteristics defined by the panel. Organic rules for grazing and access to outdoor area in pig production may be met in different ways, which express compromises between considerations for animal welfare, feed self-reliance and negative environmental impact such as greeehouse gas emissions and nitrate pollution. This article compares environmental impact of the main organic pig systems in Denmark. Normally sows are kept in huts on grassland and finishing pigs are being raised in stables with access to an outdoor run. The local and global sale of organic pork produced in Denmark has increased markedly in recent years. Organic pig production is associated with several positive aspects from a societal point of view e.g. very low use of antibiotics and animals being able to express more of their natural behavior compared to conventional production. However, there are some challenges regarding sustainability that needs to be addressed. Integrated forage and livestock production can be considered at the farm level and at the herd or animal level. At the farm level it is relevant to consider the overall utilization of N in the system in relation to crops and livestock. It is demonstrated that in organic dairy production a high transformation efficiency of N from input to edible products can be achieved compared, with conventional production. Life cycle assessment of organic and conventional arable crop rotations - focusing on greenhouse gas emissions. Five arable crop rotations in long-term field trials were investigated; four organic and one conventional - in three years on three different locations in Denmark. The organic crop rotations represented alternative scenarios for outphasing conventional slurry in organic systems. Crops from rotations with grass-clover for biogas in one out of four years had the lowest carbon footprint per kg crop DM. Including soil carbon changes in the life cycle assessment affected the results markedly.

Den sortbrogede danske landrace er meget forskellig fra de moderne krydsninger. Økologisk svinekød og økologiske kyllinger er betydeligt dyrere end tilsvarende konventionelle produkter. Derfor har mange forbrugere en forventning om, at de økologiske produkter adskiller sig fra de konventionelle - og at kvaliteten retfærdiggør merprisen. Det er baggrunden for, at der i projektet: Kvalitet og integritet i økologiske æg-, kyllinge- og svinekødsprodukter undersøges strategier for mere forskelligartet svine- og kyllingeproduktion.

Rapporten er udarbejdet på baggrund af en vidensyntese om muligheder og begrænsninger i økologisk svineproduktion. I rapporten præsenteres tilgængelig viden om svineproduktionssystemer, sygdomsrisiko ved frilandsproduktion, stimulering af svins modstandsdytighed mod infektioner gennem fodringsstrategier, svins forsyning med essentielle næringsstoffer og produktkvaliteten.

Opdrætningsstrategier for økologiske svin - produktion og slagtekvalitet Organic Eprints

I økologisk svineproduktion overføres fravænnede grise oftest til et staldsystem med dybstrøelse, tørfodring i automater og adgang til udeareal. Denne opdrætningsform muliggør en god styring af produktion og husdyrgødning, men kræver store investeringer. Et alternativ er at slagtesvinene går på græs i hele eller dele af deres produktionsperiode. Der er dog stor usikkerhed om, hvilke produktionsresultater, der kan nås. Tidligere resultater viste at foderforbruget blev stærkt forøget, hvilket samtidig betød høj næringsstofbelastning på markarealet. En kombination, hvor grisene starter på mark og går på stald i den sidste del af produktionsperioden kan måske have nogle særlige fordele i forhold til tilvækst, foderforbrug, miljøpåvirkning og håndtering af dyr....

Formål med at etablere vedagtig bevoksning på græsarealer til frilandssvin: 1) Forbedre dyrevelfærden ved at give grisene adgang til et nærmiljø, der i højere grad afspejler grisens "naturlige" nærmiljø, og som giver grisene langt større mulighed for thermo-regulerende adfærd end på arealer udelukkende med græs. Græsfoderet vil kunne blive suppleret med frugt fra træerne og give beskæftigelse. Det vil derudover have en landskabsæstetisk betydning i forhold til at gøre hytterne mindre synlige i landskabet.
