How to find pathways towards climate-smart agriculture -Views of farmers, educators and advisers in Finland 21
Savikko, Riitta; Himanen, Sari; Rimhanen, Karoliina; Mäkinen, Hanna.
Pursuing climate-smart solutions at farms can be thought of as being part of strategic farm management in the context of sustainability and adapting to the future. When preparing for climate change, not only the environmental dimensions matter but all aspects of sustainability (ecological, economic, social and cultural) should be considered in tailoring climate-smart solutions for one’s own farm. Knowledge sharing, co-operation and long-term strategic thinking skills can support developing more sustainable and resilient agriculture and help farmers find and develop their own optimal climate-smart solutions that fit their development targets and pathways. Also many common practices of organic agriculture such as nutrient cycling and biological nitrogen...

Intercropping can support ecological intensification in organic agriculture 21
Himanen, Sari; Saarnia, Meri; Lehtinen, Heli; Mäkinen, Hanna; Savikko, Riitta.
Intercropping combines the temporal and spatial dimensions of crop diversification and offers a variety of ways to shape agroecosystem ecology and productivity. It has been most used with forage legumes for biological nitrogen fixation, but it might deliver also other, less known benefits such as buffering from weeds, pests and abiotic stresses, support for beneficial biota and greater yielding per acreage. Productivity gains are imperative for developing organic agriculture. We found that legumes added as intercrops had a positive impact on both a cereal and an oilseed co-crop yield under low fertilization, indicating that intercropping can support ecological intensification. Both additive and substitutive intercropping designs resulted in overyielding....

Kaistasekaviljelyllä monipuolisuutta pellolle ja tukea hyötyeliöille 21
Himanen, Sari.
Luomussa on vahvat edellytykset tukea ja hyödyntää ekosysteemipalveluita kuten pölytystä, luontaista biologista torjuntaa ja ravinteiden kiertoa. Keväällä 2018 käynnistyy tutkimushankkeita, joissa tutkitaan kaistasekaviljelyä keinona tukea hyötyeliöitä ja parantaa sadontuottoa, unohtamatta myöskään resurssitehokasta ravinnetaloutta.

Kaistasekaviljelyllä tavoitellaan monia hyötyjä 21
Himanen, Sari; Kivijärvi, Pirjo; Nissinen, Anne; Suojala-Ahlfors, Terhi.

Overvieuw of farmers expected benefits of diversification. Report on national stakeholder involvement. 21
Hondebrink, M; Barbry, J; Himanen, Sari; Lakkenborg, H; Lepse, Liga; Trinchera, A.; Koopmans, Chris J..
Seven different European countries are participating in a transnational project SUREVEG (Strip-cropping and recycling of waste for biodiverse and resoURce-Efficient intensive VEGetable production). SUREVEG focuses on developing and implementing new diversified, intensive organic cropping systems using strip-cropping and fertility strategies from plant-based fertilizers for improved resilience, system sustainability, local nutrient recycling and soil carbon storage. This study focuses on providing references concerning benefits and drawbacks of strip-cropping and plant residues for soil fertility in field vegetable production at medium sized organic farms. Specifically to identify local stakeholders’ knowledge and develop ideas in an iterative approach on...

Volatile emission from strawberry plants is induced by mite and leaf beetle feeding and methyl jasmonate 21
Himanen, Sari; Nuotio, Netta-Leena; Vuorinen, Terhi; Tuovinen, Tuomo; Holopainen, Jarmo K..
We have studied the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from young strawberry plants, cultivars Polka and Honeoye, after feeding by several strawberry herbivores under laboratory conditions. VOC profile of strawberry plants is highly dominated by green leaf volatiles (GLVs), which are released also due to mechanical damage. Our results reveal that strawberry has potential for inducible VOC defence, and this encourages testing the attractiveness of these strawberry VOCs to predatory mites.
