In the earlier days the cataloguing and labeling of type specimens was rather careless, mostly with no mention that they were types. What we now term ’holotypes’ were previously referred to merely as ’types’, and both ’syntypes’ and ’paratypes’ were called ’cotypes’. Several of the original types were obscured in the files by writing them off as synonyms of other (earlier) species names, changing not only the generic, but even the specific names. Exchange of type material was extremely informal and often no record was made of the transfers. I have started to compile a catalogue of the type material in the museum in 1952, shortly after I was put in charge of the fish collections. During August 1961 I received from Mr. E. Roloff (Karlsruhe, Germany), a well-known aquarist, three specimens of an unidentified Rivulus. The specimens were collected by Mr. Roloff during his journey to Ecuador early 1961. The sampling place is described by him in the followinig words: „Die Rivulus stammen aus einem kleinen, sehr schattigen Bach, der in die Lagune von Limoncocha mündet. Das Wasser ist sehr weich (etwa 1° DH) und hat eine Temperatur von etwa 26° Celcius, die sich natürlich zeitweilig noch erhöht. Voorjaar 1949 ontving ik een kleine collectie levende vissen uit Suriname (Nederlands Guiana), door een zeeman verzameld in een poel nabij Paramaribo. Helaas is de juiste vindplaats niet nader aangegeven, dan enige kilometers ten zuiden van de hoofdstad. Onmiddellijk na ontvangst werden de vissen, die hier het onderwerp van bespreking zijn, in een groot gezelschapsaquarium (150 X 60 X 50 cm. hoog) ondergebracht, dat reeds werd bevolkt door verscheidene Nannostomini, Hasemania marginata, Rivulus cylindraceus, Acanthophthalmus kuhli, Dermogenus pusillus en Nannacara anomala en N. taenia.

The Dwarf-cichlid genus Apistogramma, very popular among aquarists and at present among students of animal behaviour, hitherto comprises about 16 forms, several of them hardly specifically distinguished, and probably only based on stages or sexes of other species. Nevertheless I found a new form among a small collection of fresh-water fishes, imported alive by a sailor from near Paramaribo, in Dutch Guiana. This paper, the second note on the fishes of Surinam, is chiefly based on material recently acquisited by the Museum. The first paper dealt with the Callichthyidae (cf. Beaufortia No. 12). I am much indebted to Mr. C. A. SPOELSTRA of the „Blijdorp” Zoo-Aquarium in Rotterdam, who took care that the fine collection was preserved in the proper way, and who arranged preservation of specimens in the various localities. The members of the Blijdorp expedition had merely the task to bring back alive fishes for aquatic-dealers as well as the Blijdorp aquarium.

My previous account on the Nannostomidi (1951, The Amsterdam Naturalist, 1 (1): 11—27) dealt with the synonymy of the recognized species. Diagnoses were given of the three genera, Nannostomus, Poecilobrycon and Nannobrycon (new genus). The account was based on but little material, largely on descriptions in literature, yet it could readily be proved that the species described before belong to 5 species only and to 3 well defined genera. I have since had the opportunity to study rather large series from Surinam and some other localities. An entirely new species was found among this material, which is so interesting in many respects that it induced me to reconsider the matter of the phylogeny of the tribe.

The present paper deals with part of a recently acquired collection of freshwater fishes, captured by Mr. J. VAN DER KAMP, Amsterdam, during his military service in Surinam in the years 1956 and 1957. All material is finely preserved and ecological data as well as numerous black and colour photographs by the collector add to the scientific interest of the collection.

This paper is based on the material of Callichthyid catfishes (genera Hoplosternum and Callichthys) present in the collections of the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam. The study was induced by some specimens of „kwi-kwi” introduced from Paramaribo by Mr. Arn. J. d’Ailly mayor of Amsterdam. Some of the specimens are still alive in the local aquarium. Two forms may clearly be distinguished and identified as Hoplosternum littorale (Hancock, 1828), and Hoplosternum thoracatum (Valenciennes, 1840), though both are subspecifically different.

Rediagnosis of the Old World Cyprinodont genus Aphanius

Compared with their New World relatives of the subfamily Cyprinodontinae, the Old World Cyprinodonts are but little known. However, some interesting accounts on Turkish species, discovered by Kosswig, Sözer and Aksiray, have recently been published. Besides the species known, several new forms and species are described. While compiling an account on these fishes suitable for the home aquarium (Hoedeman & Bronner, 1950—1951), we felt some characters need reexamination, not only of Aphanius, but also of the North African genus Tellia which is said to differ from Aphanius only in the absence of ventral fins.

Rivulid Fishes of Suriname and other Guyanas, with a prelininary Review of the Genus Rivulus

The present paper embodies the results of a study of 362 specimens of the genus Rivulus from Suriname and the other Guyanas. So far, 58 species names (morphological species or subspecies) have been proposed, by a great many authors; these names are listed on pages 52—53. Of the 58, topotypical specimens have been examined in 8 instances. In order to facilitate a future review of the genus, which is in great need of revision, short remarks are made on the morphology and ecology of a number of specimens, from various localities, belonging to distinct species.

The present paper is chiefly based on the Rivulid fishes collected by Dr. P. Wagenaar Hummelinck in the Antilles during the years 1930, 1936, 1937, and 1955, and in addition on some specimens collected by various other investigators at earlier dates. Some of the specimens, in particular those belonging to Rivulus marmoratus have been recorded before by Wagenaar Hummelinck (1933, 1940), Sanders (1936), and de Beaufort (1940). Among a recent importation from the Belgian Congo there was a multitude of lovely little aquariumfishes, mostly well-known to aquarists. but partly new to them, and some of these fishes even new to science. A large number of small ”Tetra’s” closely resembled the well-known species Petersius caudalis. Four perfectly preserved specimens (formol), were supplied to me by Mr. C. A. Spoelstra of Haarlem, a well-known aquarist-breeder. In order to identify this species, and designate its proper place, I started to study literature and material in the Museum.
