Assessment of two alternative switchgrass harvest and transport methods 31
Popp, Michael P.; Hogan, Robert J., Jr..
As the search for renewable energy sources from agriculture intensifies, many agricultural producers are contemplating production of a native perennial grass species, switchgrass (Panicum Vigratum, L.). While much information on various aspects of switchgrass production exists, this paper discusses implications of two alternative harvesting and transportation methods that may be suitable for Arkansas conditions. Results suggested that module building compared to the simpler round baling technology may be a promising alternative.

EXAMINING THE FED CATTLE CHOICE-SELECT DISCOUNT 31
Hogan, Robert J., Jr.; Ward, Clement E..
The choice-select discount in fed cattle pricing grids is a significant factor in determining the net grid price. Cursory analysis of data since 1997 evidences a structural change approximately when USDA-AMS mandatory price reporting began. This is important for producers/feeders deciding when to feed and market fed cattle.

Factors Affecting Quality Grade Discounts for Fed Cattle 31
Hogan, Robert J., Jr.; Carlberg, Jared G.; Ward, Clement E.; Peel, Derrell S..
Prices for Choice and Select grade fed cattle are derived from wholesale and retail beef markets. Choice-Select price discounts are a key component of fed cattle pricing, whether packers purchase fed cattle on a live weight, dressed weight, or grid. This study identifies supply, demand, and other factors affecting the Choice-Select discount series using an adaptive expectations model. It is found that the lagged value of the discount as well as the percentage grading Choice exert statistically significant influences on the discount, while neither the boxed beef price nor seasonality affect the discount.

MODELS ESTIMATING BEEF QUALITY AND YIELD GRADE DISCOUNTS 31
Hogan, Robert J., Jr.; Ward, Clement E..
Carcass discounts are an important component of grid pricing of fed cattle. Yet, little effort has been made to model the behavior of the primary carcass discounts that vary over time. This paper presents alternative models of the Choice-Select and yield grade 3-4/5 discounts. Besides noting the seasonal patterns in each, the series changed with the advent of mandatory price reporting.
