The genus Andinophryne, characterized by the presence of an omosternum, an externally visible tympanum, elongate parotoids and extensively webbed hands and feet is described from the Pacific versant of the Andes in northwestern Ecuador and southwestern Colombia. Two new species, Andinophryne colomai and A. olallai are described from Ecuador. The recently described Bufo atelopoides Lynch & Ruiz-Carranza is transferred to the new genus. Some comparisons with other atelopodid Bufonidae (Atelopus, Dendrophryniscus, Melanophryniscus, Oreophrynella, Osornophryne, Rhamphophryne) are made and some very tentative remarks on their relationships are ventilated. |

In a revision of West African Mabuya species in 1974, I described Mabuya polytropis occidentalis from Ghana and Liberia. Recently Dr. R. I. Crombie kindly drew my attention to the fact that by doing so, I had created a junior homonym of Euprepes occidentalis W. Peters, 1867, currently considered a valid species of Mabuya, occurring in Southwestern Africa (Fitzsimmons, 1943). This is true and obviously due to gross negligence on my part. Therefore the West African M. polytropis occidentalis Hoogmoed, 1974 is hereby renamed M. polytropis paucisquamis, in reference to the low numbers of scales in this subspecies as compared to the nominal subspecies. |

Three specimens of Atractus natans were found during fieldwork in the “Reserva Mamirauá”, Amazonas and a fourth one in the “Estação Científica Ferreira Penna”, Floresta de Caxiuanã, Pará, Brazil. The specimens from Mamirauá were all collected in floating logs in várzea forest during the period of flooding. The new species is small (maximum total length 308 mm) with a coniform head, has 17-17-17 smooth dorsals, without apical pits, male lacking pre-anal keels, ventrals 136-162, caudals 19-25, anal undivided. One or two postoculars, loreal 1.6 –2.8 times as long as high, frontal triangular, wider than long. Maxillary teeth 5-6. The hemipenis is bilobed, with bifurcated sulcus spematicus, capitulum with calyces covered by very small spines, body covered by... |

At the moment 36 species of lizards (6 Gekkonidae, 12 Iguanidae, 1 Scincidae and 17 Teiidae) are known for certain to occur in French Guiana. Of these 36 species, four are reported from that country for the first time (Anolis marmoratus speciosus Garman, Cercosaura o. ocellata Wagler, Prionodactylus argulus (W. Peters) and Tretioscincus agilis (Ruthven)). Moreover, there remain four species of which the occurrence in French Guiana is very likely and which presumably will be found when more lizards are collected by specialists. Eleven species were erroneously reported from French Guiana by various authors. The reasons for their removal from the list of French Guianese lizards are given. The zoogeographical conclusions of Hoogmoed (1973) remain valid,... |

The whereabouts of the salamander types described by Temminck & Schlegel in the Fauna Japonica (1838) are discussed and lectotypes are selected from the syntypes for the following nominal species : Salamandra naevia Temminck & Schlegel, S. unguiculata Temminck & Schlegel, S. subcristata Temminck & Schlegel, Molge pyrrhogaster Boie, S. nebulosa Temminck & Schlegel, S. maxima Temminck & Schlegel, Triton japonicus Temminck, S. Genei Temminck & Schlegel, Onychodactylus Schlegeli Tschudi and Megalobatrachus Sieboldii Tschudi. The holotype of S. pleurodeles Temminck & Schlegel was located and designated as lectotype of Pleurodeles waltl Michahelles. Also the holotype of S. scutata Temminck & Schlegel was found. |

The Mission Radeau des Cimes to Petit Saut, French Guiana, offered the opportunity to study the herpetofauna of the canopy of the tropical rainforest, an area hardly studied sofar. Two localities at heights of 30 and 35 m could be studied, whereas data on a third site were obtained through information from other participants. The herpetological results of the research in the canopy were meagre. Only the frog Hyla leucophyllata (Beireis) and the lizard Mabuya bistriata (Spix) were observed in the canopy. Additionally the terrestrial herpetofauna was studied extensively and turned out to contain some species that had not been reported before from French Guiana. Also, for many species new distribution data within French Guiana were obtained. Le Mission Radeau... |

Three years of fieldwork in the El Manteco region by the junior author formed the basis for the checklist presented here. Among the frogs assembled is a small species of Ololygon, new to science, also found in Guyana and Surinam. The anuran succession in the temporary lagoons, formed during the rainy season, was studied during three years and a consistent pattern was found. Comparisons with the llanos fauna are made and it is concluded that the El Manteco region contains a relatively large percentage of Amazonian elements, absent from the llanos. |

A discussion on the whereabouts of the holotype of Dracaena guianensis is given, and its rediscovery in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands (RMNH) and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Anatomie Comparée, Paris, France (MNHN-AC) is reported. The RMNH possesses a stuffed specimen, of which the left forelimb has been amputated in life and of which the skull is no longer present in the specimen. The Paris museum possesses a skull that fits the Leiden specimen. Thus, the stuffed specimen and the skull together form the complete holotype, each object can be considered a “schizotype” of the holotype. After one of us observed the species again in French Guiana and documented this with a picture, the correction of the type... |

In the present paper the eight species of Mabuya occurring in Ghana are discussed. A key for their identification is given. Two of the species reported for Ghana were known only from the rainforest in the Congo basin, now their presence in the rainforest west of the Dahomey-gap is demonstrated. One of these, Mabuya albilabris (Hallowell), has since long been considered a synonym of M. blandingii (Hallowell), but careful examination of large series proved that M. albilabris (Hallowell), is a perfectly good species, a view sustained by observations on both species in the wild. One species, of which ten specimens from Ghana and one from Nigeria are known, is described as new. A new subspecies of Mabuya polytropis Boulenger is described from the rainforest... |

The holotype of Testudo vosmaeri Fitzinger, 1826 [= Geochelone vosmaeri] is RMNH 6001. The holotype of Testudo forstenii Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= lndotestudo forstenii] is RMNH 3811. I. forstenii is considered a senior synonym of T. travancorica Boulenger, 1907 because plastral colour pattern, gular measurements, and general shell morphology do not distinguish Indian populations from Indonesian populations. The lectotype of Testudo emys Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= Manouria emys] is RMNH 3808. lndotestudo and Manouria are recognized as separate genera and briefly diagnosed. In order to avoid nomenclatural confusion and conserve current usuage, the pre-Linnaean figure in Piso (1658: 105) is selected as the lectotype for Testudo geometrica Linnaeus,... |

Two species of the little known genus Osornophryne are described from the Atlantic (Amazonian) versant of the Andes in Ecuador. O. guacamayo spec. nov. occurs at 2100 m, has well developed cranial ridges, rather peculiar feet with toes IV and V of about equal length and much longer than the others. It is rather gaudily patterned with black and yellow. O. antisana spec. nov. occurs at 3600 m and has a pointed snout, indistinct cranial ridges and is rather drably coloured. The single available adult male has a cloacal tube that runs down the back of the thighs and opens ventrally. It is speculated that this peculiar structure is indicative of internal fertilization. It is concluded that inguinal amplexus in this genus is not a primitive, but an advanced... |
