Combined production of broilers and fruits Organic Eprints
Lindhard Pedersen, H.; Olsen, A.; Pedersen, B.; Korsgaard, M.; Horsted, K..
Combined production of broilers and fruit trees is a subject often discussed in organic fruit production in Denmark. Very little research has been carried out on this type of production system. In organic production in Denmark, nearly no pesticides are allowed, so the need for alternative pest control is large. Apple sawfly (Hoplocampa testudinea) and pear midge (Contarinia pyrivora) cause big crop losses in apples and pears respectively, in unsprayed organic fruit production. Both insects infest fruitlets and cause these to drop prematurely after which the pests pupate in the topsoil. In the present experiment a research orchard with the varieties ‘Discovery’ and ‘Conference’ were used as outdoor area for broilers to minimise the population of...

Contribution of feeds from range in organic broiler production Organic Eprints
Steenfeldt, S.; Horsted, K.; Sørensen, P..
A study with organic broilers with access to a large range area with herbs was performed and the effect of three broiler genotype (JA757, T851, SU51) with different growth rates and different feeding strategies (HP vs LP) on the animals' feed intake, growth and welfare was investigated. The results so far indicate that feed intake from range and animal welfare is dependent on type of allocated feed and growth rate of the broiler genotype. Thus, gait scores and foot and plumage condition showed that the fastest growing broiler genotype had some problems when fed normal broiler feed, whereas this was not the case for the other genotypes. The fastest growing broilers also ate more pelleted broiler feed compared to the slower growing breeds, which in contrast...

Different standing crops for organic layers Organic Eprints
Horsted, K.; Hermansen, J.E..
In typical organic egg production systems nearly all the feed is imported and fed inside the henhouse. Moreover, most of the hens stay inside the house or predominantly use the area just in front of the hen house. In consequence many systems are exposed to an unacceptable accumulation of nutrients in the most utilized areas in the hen yard. It is the hypothesis that this drawback can be affected if the feeds for a higher degree are based on foraging within the hen yard. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of including standing crops in the hen yard on feed intake, production parameters, recirculation of nutrients in the system and the welfare of the poultry. Two experiments with different standing crops for laying hens were conducted...

Effect of breed on performance and meat quality of first parity sows in a seasonal organic rearing system Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Claudi-Magnussen, C.; Horsted, K.; Hermansen, J.E.; Andersen, B.H..
The objective was to compare the performance and meat quality of two different pig breeds: The modern crossbred Landrace x Yorkshire (LY) and the traditional Danish Black-Spotted (BS) breed. The LY gilts and four of the BS gilts were inseminated with semen from Duroc (D) boars, the remaining BS gilts were served by BS boars. The experiment was performed on 26 gilts over two years. RESULTS: The Black Spotted breed in general had smaller litter sizes and weaned on average in terms of kg piglet 35% less than the modern breed combination. Crossbred piglets of BS×D had growth rates from birth to weaning comparable with piglets of LY×D. Black Spotted first parity sows were significantly fatter and less meaty, and the meat was significantly redder and darker...

Effect of grass–clover forage and whole-wheat feeding on the sensory quality of eggs Organic Eprints
Horsted, K.; Hammershøj, M.; Allesen-Holm, B.H..
BACKGROUND: A sensory panel evaluated the sensory profile of eggs from hens from three experimental systems: (1) an indoor system × normal layer diet (InL), (2) a grass–clover forage system × normal layer diet (GrL), and (3) a grass–clover forage system × whole wheat and oyster shells (GrW). RESULTS: The taste of the albumen was significantly more ‘watery’ and the yolks a darker yellow/orange in the eggs from the GrL and GrW groups. The yolk was darkest from the GrW group. The yolks from the InL and GrW groups had a significantly more ‘fresh’, less ‘animal’, ‘cardboard’, and ‘intense’ aroma than the GrL group. The taste of the yolks from the InL and GrW groups was significantlymore ‘fresh’ and less ‘cardboard’-like compared to the GrL group. The yolks...

Free-range pigs foraging on Jerusalem artichokes Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Horsted, K.; Hermansen, J.E..
Free-range pig production in Northern Europe is characterized by high inputs of concentrate on grassland. This increases risk of nutrient leaching, increases feed costs and puts a pressure on land resources. Pigs’ unique ability to find a part of their food directly in the field where they are kept should be taken into consideration. One below ground field forage characterized by very high yields and with great potential as fodder source is Jerusalem Artichokes (JA) tubers. The nutritional contribution from free-range foraging, growth, feed conversion and behaviour were investigated in 36 growing pigs foraging on JA and fed concentrates restrictedly (30 % of energy recommendations) or ad libitum. Behavioural observations were carried out weekly over the...

Free-range pigs foraging on Jerusalem artichokes (Helianthus tuberosus L.) – Effect of feeding strategy on growth, feed conversion and animal behaviour Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Horsted, K.; Hermansen, J.E..
The nutritional contributions from free-range foraging, growth, feed conversion and behaviour were investigated in 36 growing pigs foraging on Jerusalem artichokes (JA) and fed concentrates restrictedly (30% of energy recommendations) or ad libitum. Compared to the ad libitum fed pigs, the pigs fed restrictedly had a significant lower daily gain (560 vs. 1224 g pig_1), improved feed conversion ratio (17.6 vs. 42.8 MJ ME concentrate kg_1 live weight gain) and spent more time foraging JA tubers (7.9 vs. 1.1%). It is estimated that pigs fed restrictedly found approximately 60% of their energy requirement from foraging in the range.

Improved texture of breast meat after a short finishing feeding period of broilers in an organic free-range system Organic Eprints
Therkildsen, M.; Horsted, K.; Steenfeldt, S..
In order to develop an organic broiler product with high ethical value, high meat quality and based on locally produced feed, we tested if a long period without high quality protein feed followed by a finishing period with a high quality protein ration would affect the meat quality. Two genotypes were included in the experiment (The Hubbard breed ‘JA757’ and the Sasso breed ‘T851’), and only female broilers were included. The chickens were raised in groups in a free range system with more than 10 square meters per chicken covered with grass and herbs. The chickens were offered free access to either an optimized organic concentrate ration (HP) or an organic ration based on locally produced ingredients (peas, rapeseed, lupine, wheat and oat) (LP). The...

Influence of genotype and feeding strategy on pig performance, plasma concentrations of micro nutrients, immune responses and fecal microbiota composition of growing-finishing pigs in a forage-based system Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Nørgaard, J.V.; Jensen, S.K.; Lauridsen, C.; Juul-madsen, H.R.; Norup, L.R.; Engberg, R.G.; Horsted, K.; Hermansen, J.E..
Among consumers in Europe and other parts of the world there is an increasing interest in high-value pork positioned with regard to animal welfare (Krystallis et al., 2012). Free-range pork production is considered more animal friendly because the system enables the animals to express their natural behaviour to a large degree. However, outdoor production of growing-finishing pigs on pastures as described by Halberg et al. (2010) has a major drawback in terms of high risk of nitrate leaching (Eriksen et al., 2006ab; Salomon et al., 2007). This is to a large extent related to high stocking densities combined with large input of nutrients from the supplementary feed (Eriksen et al., 2006ab). The use of supplementary feed is often higher in free-range compared...

Kyllinger fra frugtplantager smager godt Organic Eprints
Horsted, K.; Henning, J.; Lindhard, H.; Pedersen, B..

Male chicken thigh meat quality from fast and slow growing breeds from an organic free-range system Organic Eprints
Karlsson, H.A.; Horsted, K.; Dufek, A..
Significant effects of Genotype and Age on several of the technological meat quality attributes measured were found. In general, the meat from fast growing birds (JA) was darker, more tender, had a higher water-binding but a higher cooking loss. Birds with a higher age at slaughter was more red, less tender and had a higher cooking loss. Regarding the protein concentration of the feed, no significant effects could be found on meat quality attributes, however a high protein concentration in the feed showed a tendency towards more tender meat.

Økologisk ægproduktion: Produktion, sundhed, ernæring og næringsstofhusholdning Organic Eprints
Hegelund, L.; Hermansen, J.E.; Sørensen, J.T.; Horsted, K..
