A retrospective study was performed including 54 Swiss dairy farms of an udder health extension project. The objective was to evaluate additional effects on fertility parameters in the first two project years (y1, y2) compared to the year before (y0). Of 1494 lactations 251 diagnoses associated to reproduction and obstetrics were performed (17 per 100 Lactations). Ovary disorders (29%), retentio secundinarum (25%) and metritis (20%) were the most common items. Ovary disorders could be treated by homeopathy as successful as by hormones. Uterine disorders (ret sec., metritis) were followed by significantly better fertility parameters (days to first insemination 60 vs. 84 days, calving conception interval 68 vs. 118 days) after homeopathic treatment... |

Continuous development is needed within the farm to reach the goal of good animal health and welfare in organic livestock farming. The very different conditions between countries call for models that are relevant for different farming types and can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. This article reviews frameworks, principles and practices for animal health and welfare planning which are relevant for organic livestock farming. This review is based on preliminary analyses carried out within a European project (acronym ANIPLAN) with participants from seven countries. The process begins with gathering knowledge about the current status within a given herd as background for making decisions and planning future... |

Body Condition Scoring (BCS) is a simple method to control the energy supply of single dairy cows as well as for the entire herd. This is very important especially for organic herds due to limited resources of energy intake. Within an udder health pro-gramme regular BCS using a 5 point scale with 0.25 pt. steps is a good tool to detect feeding problems. The impact of fattened cows during dry time and meagre cows during lactation peak on metabolic health and fertility is known, but not the correlation between BCS and udder health. Within the extension programme “pro-Q” 530 dairy cows were scored at minimum twice during one lactation. The first time was 10 days before to 5 days after calving (BCS-1), the second time was in lactation up to day 100 (once or... |

The distribution of automatic milking systems (AMS) on dairy farms has increased significantly worldwide since the last millennium. For organic farms in Germay, the use of this technique is increasingly interesting, as organic dairy farms often have herd sizes between 50 and 150 cows which suit best for automatic milking systems. The implementation of AMS does not only bring along changes in terms of the milking process, but also affects the entire housing system, management and feeding. AMS is often connected with a restriction of pasturing and indirectly the risk of lame cows may increase. The aim of this study was to clarify whether the use of AMS is compatible with animal welfare in organic dairy farming, paying particular attention to impacts on... |

This chapter is the report of ANIPLAN’s deliverable 4.1 titled: ‘Evaluation report on the state of the art regarding advisor systems, education of farmers and advisors and farmer groups in the participating countries’. The seven participating countries (UK, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Norway, Germany and Denmark) had widely different approaches to advisory systems and education. This is important to consider when integrating the outcomes of the ANIPLAN project into the various systems in different countries. |

In a cross-sectional study, we investigated the effects of human-animal interactions and management factors on udder health in 46 Swiss dairy herds living in loose-housing systems on farms that participated in the Swiss dairy farm network “pro-Q.” The human-animal relationship was measured by observing milkers´ behavior, cows’ behavior during milking, and cows’ avoidance distance in the barn. Management factors were assessed by questionnaire-guided interviews and observations. Udder health was evaluated using indicators that were calculated from milk recording data over a period of 1 yr before assessment: (1) average somatic cell scores (SCS) per herd and (2) incidence of new infections per herd (NEWINF); and indicators that were calculated from quarter... |

Mastitis in dairy cows is a multi-causal disease. Animal husbandry is one of the important factors influencing herd udder health. In our study, skin lesion scores and cleanness scores are used as animal-based indicators for husbandry problems. We investigated the impact of husbandry on the prevalence of skin lesions and the correlation between skin lesions, cleanness and udder health in 67 herds joining the Swiss udder health project “pro-Q”. 62.8% of all examined cows had at least one skin lesion. 13% of all cows were seriously dirty. Housing factors, such as dimension and design of the lying area influenced the prevalence of skin lesions significantly. Hard surface, rubber mats, narrow dimensions of lying place, horns, as well as stanchion barns... |

A randomized placebo controlled trial investigates an herbal mixture containing mainly Urtica dioica L. (herba), Trigonella foenum-greacum L. (semen), Silybum marianum (L.) Gaert. (fructus) and Achillea millefolium L. (herba). The herbal mixture was fed daily (50g per cow) about 60d from dry off to calving date. 63 dairy cows (32 in the herb-(h)- and 31 in the placebo-(p)-group) of one organic farm were included in the study. Cows were differentiated depending on their lactation number: 19 first lactating cows (L1; h: n=10, p: n=9), 23 cows of second to fourth lactation (L2-4; h: n=11, p: n=12) and 21 cows with more than four lactations (L>4; h: n=11, p: n=10). The herbal group showed the following significant differences (p<0.05) compared to... |

In organic agriculture site related factors of animal environment can’t be changed to a great extend by using remedies like additional food, concentrates and medicines as it is common in conventional agriculture. Therefore site related environment factors have a great influence on the possibilities of dairy cow breeding and husbandry on an organic farm. Non site related animal breeding can elevate the risk of (metabolic) stress and diseases in cows. The goal of this project was to introduce a new tool for advisers and farmers to estimate and ameliorate the site relatedness of dairy cow breeding and husbandry. The tool should help to characterize and compare “farm types” and “dairy cow types” and to judge if they fit together or not. 12 site related factors... |

The objective of this study was to assess effects on intramammary infections and somatic cell score (SCS) upon reduction antibiotic udder treatments. The study was part of an udder health programme (pro-Q) implementing preventive measures and complementary treatment methods. The treatment proportion decreased from annually 39 to 20 per 100 cows. A total of 10'000 of quarter milk samples out of 4 yearly investigations of 33 Swiss dairy herds were analysed .There was no general change in somatic cell score (SCS) considering all taken samples. A significant increase of Staphylococcus ssp. findings (12%) could be observed beside a decrease of the SCS in samples of this pathogens group. Using GLM statistical analysis, significant effects by lactation... |

Loose housing systems are commonly designed for cows without horns. Farmers keeping horned herds are facing increased risks of injuries among the cows. Interviews were carried out on farms with 62 horned dairy herds in order to collect practical evidence on problems and suitable measures related to the keeping of loose housed horned cows. Most farmers see the feeding area, the cubicles and the waiting area before milking as problem areas. A possibility to securely lock all cows in the feeding rack and an easy retreat from the rack is regarded important. The cubicles should offer an exit to the front, which can be used by cows when attacked from behind. Generous space allowances in the waiting area as well as in the whole stable were recommended.... |

Ethnopharmacological relevance The term “traditional” is well established in European (human) medicine and even appears in recent European regulations on herbal medicinal products connected to a simplified registration. In contrast, a scientific discussion of a Traditional European Veterinary Herbal Medicine is still lacking in spite of a rising interest, in herbal medicine for animals in particular of veterinarians. There is only limited systematic ethnoveterinary research in Europe, with exception of the Mediterranean region, Switzerland and Austria. We conducted a survey on the ethnoveterinary knowledge of farmers in the pre-alpine and alpine regions of the Swiss cantons of Bern and Lucerne. We compared the findings with earlier studies conducted in... |

Background: Very few ethnoveterinary surveys have been conducted in central Europe. However, traditional knowledge on the use of medicinal plants might be an option for future concepts in treatment of livestock diseases. Therefore the aim of this study was to document and analyse the traditional knowledge and use of homemade herbal remedies for livestock by farmers in four Swiss cantons. Methods: Research was conducted in 2012. Fifty farmers on 38 farms were interviewed with the aid of semistructured interviews. Detailed information about the plants used and their mode of preparation were documented as well as dosage, route of administration, category of use, origin of knowledge, frequency of use, and satisfaction with the treatment. Results: In... |
