Are there indications of climate change induced increases in variability of major field crops in the northernmost European conditions? Organic Eprints
Peltonen-Sainio, Pirjo; Jauhiainen, Lauri; Hakala, Kaija.
As the northern hemisphere will experience the greatest increases in temperature and indications of climatic change are already visible in the north (in the 2000s average temperatures exceeded the long-term mean), we sought to establish if there are already signs of increased variability in yield and quality of the major field crops grown under the northernmost European growing conditions: spring and winter cereals (barley Hordeum vulgare L., oat Avena sativa L., wheat Triticum aestivum L., rye Secale cereale L.), spring rapeseed (turnip rape Brassica rapa L., oilseed rape B. napus L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.) and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). We used long-term yield datasets of FAO for Finland (1960s to date) and MTT Agrifood Research Finland (MTT)...

Climate change and prolongation of growing season: changes in regional potential for field crop production in Finland Organic Eprints
Peltonen-Sainio, Pirjo; Jauhiainen, Lauri; Hakala, Kaija; Ojanen, Hannu.
Climate change offers new opportunities for Finnish field crop production, which is currently limited by the short growing season. A warmer climate will extend the thermal growing season and the physiologically effective part of it. Winters will also become milder, enabling introduction of winter-sown crops to a greater extent than is possible today. With this study we aim to characterise the likely regional differences in capacity to grow different seed producing crops. Prolongation of the Finnish growing season was estimated using a 0.5º latitude × 0.5º longitude gridded dataset from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. The dataset comprised an average estimate from 19 global climate models of the response of Finnish climate to low (B1) and high (A2)...

Cultivar improvement and environmental variability in yield removed nitrogen of spring cereals and rapeseed in northern growing conditions according to a long-term dataset Organic Eprints
Peltonen-Sainio, Pirjo; Jauhiainen, Lauri.
The balance between applied and harvested nitrogen (yield removed nitrogen, YRN %) is a recognized indicator of the risk of N leaching. In this study we monitored the genetic improvements and environmental variability as well as differences among crop species (spring cereals and rapeseed) in YRN in order to characterize changes that have occurred and environmental constraints associated with reducing N leaching into the environment. MTT long-term multi-location field experiments for spring cereals (Hordeum vulgare L., Avena sativa L. and Triticum aestivum L.), turnip rape (Brassica rapa L.), and oilseed rape (B. napus L.) were conducted in 1988–2008, covering each crop’s main production regions. Yield (kg ha-1) was recorded and grain/seed nitrogen content...

Development of social behaviour and importance of social relations in calves Organic Eprints
Niskanen, Suvi; Raussi, Satu; Veissier, Isabelle; Kaihilahti, Jutta; Hänninen, Laura; Hepola, Helena; Jauhiainen, Lauri.
We concluded that the preference for peers met at two weeks of age can be seen in proximity of the calves. However, calves can form stable relations at least until the age of 14 weeks. These relations reduce aggressive behaviour, activity and frequency of vocalization, and help calves to cope with new and potentially stressful situations.

Effects of grass-red clover silage digestibility and concentrate protein concentration on performance, carcass value, eating quality and economy of finishing Hereford bulls reared in cold conditions Organic Eprints
Manninen, Merja; Honkavaara, Markku; Jauhiainen, Lauri; Nykänen, Arja; Heikkilä, Anna-Maija.
The aim of the present experiment was to study the effects of (1) digestibility of grass-red clover silage (GCS) and (2) concentrate protein concentration on the performance, eating quality and economy of Hereford bulls during a six months pre-slaughter period, and reared in cold indoor facilities. Thirty-one bulls with an initial live weight (LW) of 289 kg were selected for a 2 ~ 2 factorial design experiment consisting of two primary growth GCSs harvested at different maturities (in vitro digestible organic matter (OM) in dry matter (DM), D value: Early-cut, E, 750 g kg-1 DM; Late-cut, L, 699 g kg-1 DM) and two concentrate crude protein concentrations (Medium, M, 170 g kg-1 DM; High, H, 210 g kg-1 DM). The concentrate comprised milled barley and...

Effects of winter feeding strategies with alternative feeds on the performance of mature suckler cows and their progeny Organic Eprints
Manninen, Merja; Saarijärvi, Kirsi; Huhta, Harri; Jauhiainen, Lauri; Aspila, Pentti.
The present study evaluated the effects of feeding strategies with alternative feeds on the performance of mature suckler cows and their progeny during indoor feeding and subsequent grazing. In both experiments, a 2 × 2 factorially arranged design consisted of two feeding strategies (Step-up, S; Flat-rate, F) and two diets (Control, C; Alternative, A). The aim of Strategy F was to offer the cows the same amount of energy as offered on Strategy S, but at a constant daily level. In Experiment 1, cows on Diet C were offered grass silage and straw and on Diet A grass silage and a fl our-mill industry by-product. On Strategy S, feeding was stepped with barley (0, 1.5 and 3.5 kg d-1). On Strategy F, barley was offered 1.43 kg per head daily. In Experiment 2,...

Field-scale spatial variation in yields and nitrogen fixation of clover-grass leys and in soil nutrients Organic Eprints
Nykänen, Arja; Jauhiainen, Lauri; Kemppainen, Jukka; Lindström, Kristina.
Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) plays a crucial role in organic farming and red clover (Trifolium pratense) is cultivated widely in boreal grasslands for BNF. A geostatistical method, model-based kriging, was used to determine the spatial variation in yield, clover content and BNF of clover-grass leys as well as soil chemical properties throughout two fields in 2004-2006. Based on this variation, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determine the similar patterns of variation. On one location, total dry matter yields of the leys decreased over three production years from 9 700 to 4 100 kg ha-1, clover content from 53 to 26% and BNF from 150 to 40 kg N ha-1, whereas on the other location the yields increased from 6 500 to 7 100 kg ha-1, clover...

Recommendable block sizes: a case study on Finnish official variety trials of barley cultivars Organic Eprints
Jauhiainen, Lauri; Öfversten, Jukka; Kangas, Arjo.
Well-established results in the current statistical literature imply that plant breeders should use incomplete block designs wherever spatial variability exists and the number of treatments is large. But the theoretical position does not indicate the recommendable number of cultivars in an incomplete block. In this study we used data from 28 official variety trials conducted in Finland during the period 2001-2005 to study theffect of block size on the efficiency of testing pairwise yield differences of barley cultivars and cultivar rankings. In previous trials some 6-7 cultivars have usually been included in one block. Our results imply that the efficiency of testing procedures could be improved by using a block size as small as 4-5. The results further...

Undersown catch crops as a source of biomass for energy Organic Eprints
Niemeläinen, Oiva; Jauhiainen, Lauri; Kontturi, Markku; Nissinen, Oiva; Vuorinen, Martti; Niskanen, Markku.
Italian ryegrass would need an additional nitrogen fertilizer application after cereal harvest to achieve its full yield potential. Use of legumes as undersown crops might be better in energy balance point of view. Yield of catch crops would produce suitable biomass for biogas refineries adding substantial amount to animal manure which might be the main biomass source for biogas production.
