Biopore characterization with in situ endoscopy: Influence of earthworms on carbon and nitrogen contents Organic Eprints

Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. However, depending on their individual biography, i.e. colonization by plant roots or earthworms, different nutrient status can be assumed. The subsoil (i.e. the soil beneath the ploughed soil layer) provides a large potential reservoir of nutrients for crops but the conditions for nutrient acquisition are generally adverse due tolow organic matter contents, low nutrient concentration in the soil solution, low microbial activity and high bulk density. Charakterisierung des Wurzelwachstums in Bioporen mit in situ Endoskopie Organic Eprints

More information on root growth in biopores is needed for quantifying nutrient acquisition from the subsoil. The article presents an approach for using in situ endoscopy in biopores that allowed to quantify root-soil contact and detect differences in root morphology and orientation between mallow (Malva sylvestris L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). While 85 % of all wheat roots entered the biopores laterally from the bulk soil, mallow roots in biopores grew predominantly (69 %) with vertical orientation and established contact to the pore wall predominantly via lateral roots. Comparing intensive, extensified and organic grassland farming in southern Germany by process life cycle assessment Organic Eprints

To reduce the environmental burden of agriculture, suitable methods to comprehend and assess the impact on natural resources are needed. One of the methods considered is the life cycle assessment (LCA) method, which was used to assess the environmental impacts of 18 grassland farms in three different farming intensities - intensive, extensified, and organic - in the Allgäu region in southern Germany. Extensified and organic compared with intensive farms could reduce negative effects in the abiotic impact categories of energy use, global warming potential and ground water mainly by renouncing mineral nitrogen fertilizer. Competitiveness of winter wheat stands against weeds: Effects of cultivar choice, row width and drilling direction Organic Eprints

The need for competitive crop stands can be regarded as a basic requirement for weed control, potentially reducing the need for direct control measures. One way the crop may suppress weed growth is by the restriction of light through crop shading. As part of the EU-project ²Strategies of weed control in Organic Farming² (WECOF) trials with winter wheat were carried out to evaluate the potential of wheat shading ability as a weed control measure. Factors included were cultivar, row width and drilling direction. Results of the first experimental year are presented.

Controlling weeds with natural phytotoxic Substances (NPS) in direct seeded soybean Organic Eprints

Field trials on weed control in direct seeding with the use of natural phytotoxic ingredients (NPI) were carried out from 2011 to 2013 at the Agricultural Research Institute of Paraná state, Brazil (IAPAR). Soybean was direct seeded into residues of precrop black oats (\textit{Avena strigosa)}. In a split-plot trial the whole-plot treatment consisted of two different weed densities. In the eight subplot treatments the effects of "natural phytotoxic ingredients" (NPI) on weed control was evaluated. Cotton-basil intercropping: effects on pests, yields and economical parameters in an organic field in Fayoum, Egypt Organic Eprints

In many countries, cotton is traditionally intercropped with other plants in order to increase yields and to control pests. We tested the effects of intercropping cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) during one field season on pest infestation, yields, and economical parameters in the Governorate of Fayoum, Egypt. Basil, which is known for its repellent effect on various insect pests, was mixed with cotton in three different intercropping rates (no, medium and high basil area fraction) and two row distances (60 and 90 cm) using a substitutive design with four replicates. High nitrous oxide emissions are reported in literature when grass-clover is mulched in stockless farming systems. In our study, we measured similar emission rates especially after intensive rainfall when shoot biomass of grass-clover is transferred to maize and celeriac as a source of plant available nitrogen. Inefficient use of nitrogen bound in this mulch may furthermore result in nitrate leaching, especially if harvest is late and bare fallow over winter unavoidable.

Effects of traditional and biodynamic farmyard manure amendment on yields, soil chemical, biochemical and biological properties in a long-term field experiment Organic Eprints

We studied the effects of applications of traditionally composted farmyard manure (FYM) and two types of biodynamically composted FYM over 9 years on soil chemical properties, microbial biomass and respiration, dehydrogenase and saccharase activities, decomposition rates and root production under grass-clover, activity and biomass of earthworms under wheat, and yields in a grass-clover, potatoes, winter wheat, field beans, spring wheat, winter rye crop rotation. Effects of weed management practices on enteric pathogen transfer into lettuce (lactuca sativa var. capitata) Organic Eprints

We evaluated the effect of using farmyard manure (FYM) in combination with four weed control techniques on the hygienic quality of lettuce. Treatments with six replications included the application of fresh FYM on the soil combined with hand-hoeing (assumed high-risk) and fresh FYM incorporation combined with plastic mulch (assumed low risk). The experiment was repeated twice per season over two years at Bonn University, Germany. The amounts of enteric bacteria in all treatments were within the acceptable limits. Enterococcus was detected in the majority of the samples in concentrations up to 3.7 log10 CFU/g. The Escherichia coli contents of lettuce ranged between n.d. and 103 CFU/g. Optimierte bodenphysikalische Eigenschaften sind Grundlage der Entwicklung vitaler Getreidebestände und hoher Kornerträge. Wurzelwachstum und Wurzelaktivität stehen in engem Zusammenhang mit Bodendichte, Porenverteilung, Eindringwiderstand und dem gewogenen mittleren Aggregatdurchmesser. Konventionelle Grundbodenbearbeitung mit dem Wendepflug führt häufig zu ungünstigerem Bodengefüge, im Zusammenhang mit hohen Auflasten, zu Pflugsohlen. Ziel des Projektes war es, den Einfluß verschiedener Bodenbearbeitungssysteme auf bodenphysikalische Eigenschaften und das Wurzelwachstum von Wintergerste unter den klimatischen Bedingungen des Mittelmeerraums zu untersuchen.

Effects of nitrogen supply (high / low), fertilizer type (biodynamic / organic / mineral) and application of the biodynamic horn silica preparation on nitrate, ascorbic acid and glucosinolate contents of rocket (Eruca sativa L.) were studied under conditions of full sunlight (100% photosynthetically active radiation PAR) and shading (55% PAR). Nitrate contents increased in response to shading and under conditions of full sunlight also in response to high nitrogen supply and mineral fertilization. Einfluss von Lichtspektrum und Beleuchtungsstärke auf das Keimlängenwachstum und den Ertrag von Kartoffeln Organic Eprints

Die Wirkung praxisüblicher Leuchtstoffröhren mit unterschiedlichem Wellenlängenspektrum in zwei Beleuchtungsstärken auf das Keimlängenwachstum und den Ertrag der Kartoffelsorten 'Belana' und 'Nicola' wurde 2008 und 2009 auf dem ökologisch bewirtschafteten Versuchsbetrieb Wiesengut in Hennef geprüft. Das Längenwachstum der Keime wurde bei beiden Sorten durch Pflanzenlicht und Warmtonlampen stärker gehemmt als durch Kalttonlampen mit einem geringen Anteil an rotem Licht (Wellenlänge ~700 nm). Bei höherer Beleuchtungsstärke waren die Keime bei beiden Sorten zum Zeitpunkt der Pflanzung kürzer als bei niedriger Beleuchtungsstärke. Während für den Verbraucher organisch angebauter Kartoffeln der Geschmack, die Koch-eigenschaften und der Gesundheitswert maßgebliche Kaufkriterien darstellen, sind für den Anbauer das Ertragsniveau, die Ertragssicherheit und die Lagereignung wichtige Zielgrößen. Maßgebliche Einflußfaktoren auf diese Zielgrößen stellen die Sortenwahl und die Höhe der organischen Düngung dar.
