Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. However, depending on their individual biography, i.e. colonization by plant roots or earthworms, different nutrient status can be assumed. In this study, individual biopores were characterized with respect to signs of earthworm passage using in situ endoscopy, a non-destructive technique for display of pore wall characteristics. Subsequent sampling and analysis of biopore linings and blockages revealed that only biopores with visible earthworm coatings had significantly higher C and N contents as compared to the surrounding bulk... |

The subsoil (i.e. the soil beneath the ploughed soil layer) provides a large potential reservoir of nutrients for crops but the conditions for nutrient acquisition are generally adverse due tolow organic matter contents, low nutrient concentration in the soil solution, low microbial activity and high bulk density. However, the structural heterogeneity of the subsoil including biopores created by roots and earthworms requires a more detailed view on nutrient acquisition processes. First results from the DFG research unit ‘Crop Sequence and the Nutrient Acquisition from the Subsoil’ have shown that cultivation of perennial fodder crops with taproot systems can result in enhanced biopore density in the subsoil and increased root-length density of subsequent... |

More information on root growth in biopores is needed for quantifying nutrient acquisition from the subsoil. The article presents an approach for using in situ endoscopy in biopores that allowed to quantify root-soil contact and detect differences in root morphology and orientation between mallow (Malva sylvestris L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). While 85 % of all wheat roots entered the biopores laterally from the bulk soil, mallow roots in biopores grew predominantly (69 %) with vertical orientation and established contact to the pore wall predominantly via lateral roots. The current status and future perspectives of the method are discussed. |

Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. As a result of colonization of biopores by earthworms, pore walls are enriched with nutrients. In this study, a first attempt was made to assess the influence of earthworm abundance on both structural pore wall characteristics as assessed with in situ endoscopy and on pore wall C and N contents. Higher earthworm density resulted in higher N contents and significantly higher C contents in biopore walls as compared to the surrounding bulk soil, regardless whether they showed visible earthworm coatings. In the treatment with lower... |

To reduce the environmental burden of agriculture, suitable methods to comprehend and assess the impact on natural resources are needed. One of the methods considered is the life cycle assessment (LCA) method, which was used to assess the environmental impacts of 18 grassland farms in three different farming intensities - intensive, extensified, and organic - in the Allgäu region in southern Germany. Extensified and organic compared with intensive farms could reduce negative effects in the abiotic impact categories of energy use, global warming potential and ground water mainly by renouncing mineral nitrogen fertilizer. Energy consumption of intensive farms was 19.1 GJ/ha and 2.7 GJ/t milk, of extensified and organic farms 8.7 and 5.9 GJ/ha along with 1.3... |

Field trials on weed control in direct seeding with the use of natural phytotoxic ingredients (NPI) were carried out from 2011 to 2013 at the Agricultural Research Institute of Paraná state, Brazil (IAPAR). Soybean was direct seeded into residues of precrop black oats (\textit{Avena strigosa)}. In a split-plot trial the whole-plot treatment consisted of two different weed densities. In the eight subplot treatments the effects of "natural phytotoxic ingredients" (NPI) on weed control was evaluated. The two NPI formulations used in the experiment contained 50 L/ha Pine Oil (formulation ``Pine Oil'') or 50 L/ha d-Limonene (formulation ``Limonene''), both combined with 50 kg/ha NaCl. These formulations were applied once, twice, or three times in a weekly... |

In many countries, cotton is traditionally intercropped with other plants in order to increase yields and to control pests. We tested the effects of intercropping cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) and basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) during one field season on pest infestation, yields, and economical parameters in the Governorate of Fayoum, Egypt. Basil, which is known for its repellent effect on various insect pests, was mixed with cotton in three different intercropping rates (no, medium and high basil area fraction) and two row distances (60 and 90 cm) using a substitutive design with four replicates. Compared with the non-intercropped plots, cotton-basil intercropping significantly reduced total pest infestation and led to a 50% reduced abundance of the pink... |

By combined application of the three picture forming methods biocrystallization ac-cording to Pfeiffer, capillary dynamolisis according to Wala and circular chromatogra-phy according to Pfeiffer encoded food samples from different production systems have been repeatedly differentiated and identified by Dr. Ursula Graf. In the present study we tested whether by using the combined three picture forming methods en-coded food samples from different production systems could also be differentiated and identified in a different laboratory by another trained person. Ten encoded wheat samples each from 2000 and 2005 harvests were taken from the long-term DOK- trial in Oberwil/Switzerland and examined with the pictomorphological methods. The wheat samples derived... |

We studied the effects of applications of traditionally composted farmyard manure (FYM) and two types of biodynamically composted FYM over 9 years on soil chemical properties, microbial biomass and respiration, dehydrogenase and saccharase activities, decomposition rates and root production under grass-clover, activity and biomass of earthworms under wheat, and yields in a grass-clover, potatoes, winter wheat, field beans, spring wheat, winter rye crop rotation. The experiment was conducted near Bonn, on a Fluvisol using a randomised complete block design (n=6). Our results showed that plots which received either prepared or non-prepared FYM (30 Mg ha−1 year−1) had significantly increased soil pH, P and K concentrations, microbial biomass, dehydrogenase... |

We evaluated the effect of using farmyard manure (FYM) in combination with four weed control techniques on the hygienic quality of lettuce. Treatments with six replications included the application of fresh FYM on the soil combined with hand-hoeing (assumed high-risk) and fresh FYM incorporation combined with plastic mulch (assumed low risk). The experiment was repeated twice per season over two years at Bonn University, Germany. The amounts of enteric bacteria in all treatments were within the acceptable limits. Enterococcus was detected in the majority of the samples in concentrations up to 3.7 log10 CFU/g. The Escherichia coli contents of lettuce ranged between n.d. and 103 CFU/g. There was no consistent effect suggesting a specific risk linked to one... |

Firm soil mulch husbandry, especially direct seeding, may provide an opportunity for Organic Agriculture to increase soil fertility by efficient erosion control and save labour and energy. In this context, occasional direct seeding (oDS) of faba bean into a straw mulch of residues from precrop oats should be scrutinized. A one-factorial field trial with four replicates was carried out 2010 at the organic research farm Wiesengut of the University of Bonn in Hennef/Sieg. Direct seeding was performed into mulch layers of 0, 4 and 6 t ha-1 of straw residues, respectively. Mouldboard ploughing combined with conventional seedbed preparation was used as control. Compared with the oDS treatment without straw residues, oDS treatments with straw residues (4 and 6 t... |

Effects of nitrogen supply (high / low), fertilizer type (biodynamic / organic / mineral) and application of the biodynamic horn silica preparation on nitrate, ascorbic acid and glucosinolate contents of rocket (Eruca sativa L.) were studied under conditions of full sunlight (100% photosynthetically active radiation PAR) and shading (55% PAR). Nitrate contents increased in response to shading and under conditions of full sunlight also in response to high nitrogen supply and mineral fertilization. Ascorbic acid contents were significantly higher with low nitrogen supply, biodynamic and organic fertilization, horn silica application and under conditions of low nitrogen supply with full sunlight. Glucosinolate contents were significantly increased by low... |
