Breeding Goals for Organic Dairy Farming in Denmark Based on the Principles of Organic Agriculture Organic Eprints
Slagboom, Margot; Wallenbeck, Anna; Rydhmer, Lotta; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Kargo, Morten.
Organic dairy farming (ODF) is different from conventional dairy farming in management practices, but so far the same breeding goal (BG) is used, based on the same economic models (EM). However, ODF is based on the principles of organic agriculture defined by the IFOAM, which are not easily interpreted in economic terms and it may be uestionable to use a BG for ODF based on EM. In this study we set up three BGs for ODF in Denmark, one based on the principles of organic agriculture, one focusing on roughage consumption and feed efficiency, and one focusing on disease resistance. A questionnaire and desired gains index were used to set up the BGs. Correlations between these BGs and BGs based on EM were low. Which BG would be best suitable to use for ODF in...

Definition of breeding goals for dairy breeds in organic production systems Organic Eprints
Hjortø, Line; Sørensen, Anders Christian; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Munk, Arne; Berg, Peer; Kargo, Morten.
In this study, we attempt to assess the Danish organic dairy farmers' acceptance of the economic values derived from a stochastic, bio-economic model. We expect the results to show that farmers give increased priority to some traits above the objectively derived economic vaule.

Detailed milk fatty acid profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population Organic Eprints
Poulsen, Nina Aagaard; Hein, Lisa; Gregersen, Sandra Beyer; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Larsen, L.B.; Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes.
Abstract Milk fatty acid (FA) composition can be manipulated through feeding, and especially effects of grazing have been shown to promote a healthier milk FA profile due to increasing contents of beneficial FAs, like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and α-linolenic acid (C18:3, the main n3 FA in milk). In addition to diet-based manipulations, selective breeding for specific FA could also be a strategy for altering the FA profile as milk FA display low to moderate heritabilites (0.07-0.34 in Danish Holstein). Since 2015, milk samples from all Danish dairy cows under yield control have been analyzed using mid infrared spectroscopy. The FOSS Application Note 64 has subsequently been used to predict content of seven FA groups (short-chain FA (SCFA),...

Detailed milk fatty acid profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population Organic Eprints
Hein, Lisa; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Gregersen, Sandra Beyer; Larsen, Lotte Bach; Demirovic, Dino; Warnecke, Solveig; Nielsen, Niels Henning; Munk, Arne; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Pedersen, Jørn; Kargo, Morten.
The fatty acid (FA) composition of bovine milk may be related to human health and technological properties of dairy products. The FA composition can be altered both through management and breeding. Large scale FA profiling of the Danish dairy cattle population has now been implemented for more than a year. For the first time access to millions of FA observations across an entire dairy population enables in depth analysis of the factors affecting the FA profile of milk. This was the aim of this study. For 12 months more than 3.5 million milk samples from four Danish dairy breeds had been analyzed using mid infrared spectroscopy and application of FOSS Application Note 64 for predicting content of seven FA groups and four individual FA. The results showed...

Er der behov for nye avlsmål for økologiske malkekøer? Organic Eprints
Kargo, Morten.

Strudsholm, Finn; Gregersen, Sandra Beyer; Larsen, Lotte Bach; Poulsen, Nina Aagaard; Hein, Lisa; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Kargo, Morten; Munk, Arne.

Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Munk, Arne.
Litteraturen viser...

Genetic analysis of predicted fatty acid profiles of milk from Danish Holstein and Danish Jersey cattle populations Organic Eprints
Hein, Lisa; Sørensen, Lars Peter; Kargo, Morten; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes.
The objective of this study was to assess the genetic variability of the detailed fatty acid (FA) profiles of Danish Holstein (DH) and Danish Jersey (DJ) cattle populations. We estimated genetic parameters for 11 FA or groups of FA in milk samples from the Danish milk control system between May 2015 and October 2016. Concentrations of different FA and FA groups in milk samples were measured by mid-infrared spectroscopy. Data used for parameter estimation were from 132,732 first-parity DH cows and 21,966 first-parity DJ cows. We found the highest heritabilities for test day measurements in both populations for short-chain FA (DH = 0.16; DJ = 0.16) and C16:0 (DH = 0.14; DJ = 0.16). In DH, the highest heritabilities were also found for saturated FA and...

Herd characteristics influence farmers’ preferences for trait improvements in Danish Red and Danish Jersey cows Organic Eprints
Slagboom, Margot; Kargo, Morten; Edwards, David; Sørensen, Anders Christian; Thomasen, Jørn Rind; Hjortø, Line.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to characterize preferences of farmers for breeding goal traits with Danish Red (DR) or Danish Jersey (DJ) cows. A breed-specific survey was established to characterize farmers’ preferences for improvements in 10 traits, by means of pairwise rankings using the online software 1000Minds. These pairwise rankings were based on equal economic worth of trait improvements. The DR survey was filled in by 87 farmers and the DJ survey by 76 farmers. Both DR and DJ farmers gave the highest preference to improvements in mastitis, and the lowest to calving difficulty. By means of a cluster analysis, three distinct clusters of farmers were identified per breed. Comparisons of herd characteristics between clusters suggest that farmers...

Improving animal health and welfare in organic cattle milk production through breeding and management Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Jan Tind; Winckler, Christoph; Wallenbeck, Anna; Spengler, Anet; Knierim, Ute; Kargo, Morten; Walczak, Jacek; Ribikauskas, Vytautas.
Overall summary of main results, discussion and conclusions WP1 The aim in WP1 was to map the performance of local breeds compared to commercial dairy breeds on organic farms in Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Germany with regard to health associated traits, fertility and production traits. In a study covering the whole population of the selected breeds, managed under organic conditions during the period 1.7.2011 to 30.6.2014, we found lower milk yields for local breeds. In general we found better fertility performance (less days open, shorter calving intervals, lower number of inseminations) for at least one of the local breeds involved in each country. We also detected lower proportions of milk records with somatic cell counts above 100.000...
