A comparison of the application of a biological and phenetic species concept in the Hebeloma crustuliniforme complex within a phylogenetic framework Naturalis
Aanen, Duur K.; Kuyper, Thomas W..
A method is presented to derive an operational phenetic species concept for the Hebeloma crustuliniforme complex in northwestern Europe. The complex was found to consist of at least 22 biological species (intercompatibility groups; ICGs). Almost none of these biological species could be recognised unambiguously by morphological criteria. It is therefore necessary to base a phenetic species concept on combinations of biological species. However, such species delimitation must be performed within an explicitly phylogenetic context. It is crucial therefore to have a reliable estimate of the phylogeny of 22 biological species in that complex. Based on two nuclear sequences, we present a best estimate of the phylogeny of biological species within the complex....

Notulae ad Floram agaricinam Neerlandicam — VI-VII. Rickenella and Omphalina Naturalis
Kuyper, Thomas W..
Rickenellla swartzii (Fr.) Kuyp., comb. nov. — Agaricus swartzii Fr., Obs. mycol. 1: 90. 1815 (basionym). This species has been known thus far as Rickenella setipes (Fr.: Fr.) Raithelhuber. However, the original diagnosis of Agaricus setipes (Fries, 1818: 162) clearly refers to another species, as A. setipes was characterized as follows: pileus 5—8 mm broad, campanulato-convex; stipe very long, 85—100 mm, setaceous; lamellae greyish; strongly resembling Agaricus corticola Pers.: Fr. As far as I can ascertain this protologue refers to a species of Mycena. The misapplication of the name Agaricus setipes might have arisen when Fries (1873: pl. 75 f. 4) published an illustration of an unnamed variety of A. setipes, which undoubtedly represents Rickenella...

Notulae ad Floram agaricinam neerlandicam — XIV. A noemnclatural note on Rhodocybe truncata Naturalis
Noordeloos, Machiel E.; Kuyper, Thomas W..
Agaricus truncatus Schaeff. (Fungi Bavariae, pl. 251. 1763) is variously interpreted as a species of Hebeloma and Rhodocybe. Although the type-plate is not so easy to interpret, the adnate, sinuate lamellae, sordid spore print, and red-brown, truncate pileus give way to the idea that Fries (1838) was right in placing Agaricus truncatus in tribus Hebeloma. This opinion was followed by e.g. J. Lange (1938) and Moser (1978, 1984). Quélet (1880) had another opinion on Agaricus truncatus and placed it in the genus Tricholoma. This concept is known by modern mycologists as Rhodocybe truncata (Schaeff.) Singer. Still Tricholoma truncatum (Schaeff.) Quél., Rhodopaxillus truncatus (Schaeff.) Maire, and Rhodocybe truncata (Schaeff.) Singer all have the same type,...

Notulae ad Floram agaricinam neerlandicam — XXX. Melanoleuca polioleuca forma pusilla Boekhout & Kuyper. A new name for Melanoleuca polioleuca forma oreina (Fr.: Fr.) Boekhout Naturalis
Boekhout, Teun; Kuyper, Thomas W..
A new name is introduced for the small-sized variant of Melanoleuca polioleuca, formerly also recognized as f. oreina. The authors demonstrate that the use of this epithet is undesirable because it is not likely that Agaricus oreinus Fr.: Fr. represents the same taxon.

Notulae ad Floram agaricinam neerlandicam — XXXV. On the typification of Lactarius necator Naturalis
Noordeloos, Machiel E.; Kuyper, Thomas W..
Lactarius necator is neotypified with a collection from Sweden that fits well with the sanctioning description. The plate of Bulliard representing the original concept of Agaricus necator, is excluded from the type diagnosis. It is demonstrated that A. plumbeus is not conspecific with A. necator, and the alternative use of the name Lactarius plumbeus (Bull.: Fr.) Gray, as recently proposed by Heilmann-Clausen et al. (1998) is rejected.

Studies in Inocybe—I. Revision of the new taxa of Inocybe described by Velenovský Naturalis
Kuyper, Thomas W..
The 58 new taxa of Inocybe described by Velenovsky have been revised. Several do not belong to the genus Inocybe as currently defined. Most species names are reduced to synonymy, but a few name changes are necessary. One new combination is proposed.

The typification of Agaricus fastibilis Pers.: Fr. The type species of the genus Hebeloma (Fr.) Kumm Naturalis
Kuyper, Thomas W.; Vesterholt, Jan.
The typification of Agaricus faslibilis Pers.: Fr. is discussed. The neotype, which has been designated by Singer, is rejected. As lectotype the illustration of Agaricus laterinus by Batschis designated. Problems associated with a special typification status for sanctioned names are discussed.
