| Present-day human activities are reducing and altering Amazonian biodiversity and disrupting the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems (Chapter 19 & 20). This chapter outlines some of the approaches required to address the main threats to the Amazon?s biodiversity and ecosystems, i.e., deforestation, damming of rivers, mining, hunting, illegal trade, drug production and trafficking, illegal logging, overfishing, and infrastructure expansion. The role of restoration is addressed in Chapters 28 and 29. |

| Os dez pontos-chave identificados nesse documento enfatizam a importância de reconhecer a degradação florestal como uma ameaça séria à conservação da Floresta Amazônica. O combate aos impactos da degradação merece tanta atenção quanto o desmatamento quando se considera a abrangência espacial dos eventos de queimadas, exploração predatória de madeira e fragmentação das florestas. Ao contrário dos desmatamentos, os efeitos da degradação são mais difíceis de perceber, podem ocorrer de forma lenta e, em longo prazo, terminam por ameaçar a biodiversidade e comprometer serviços ecológicos importantes nas florestas. | We present an updated annotated avifaunal checklist for the Santarém region of central Pará state, Brazil, an area that has one of the oldest histories of ornithological exploration in South America. We combine data from a fivemonth quantitative survey of the birds of the municipalities of Santarém and Belterra (east of the Tapajós River) between 2010 and 2011 with an exhaustive search of material in museum collections worldwide and digital vouchers deposited online. | We present the results of a five-month survey of the birds of Paragominas, Pará, a municipality in eastern Brazilian Amazonia that lies within the Belém center of endemism. We recorded 440 species, sampling habitats across a gradient of disturbance, ranging from ?undisturbed? primary forest, through logged and burnt forest, patches of varyingly aged secondary forest, cattle pastures and intensive mechanized agriculture. Given the potential for species miss-identifications in avian inventories, we paid special attention to obtaining voucher documentation (photographs and sound recordings) and here provide a unique collection of publically-accessible digital vouchers for 418 species recorded (95% of the total).
