A first contribution to our knowledge of the flora of the Talaud Islands and Morotai Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Lam, H.J..
The Talaud Islands are forming part of the Malay Archipelago, being situated north of Celebes and the Moluccas, south of Mindanao and east of the Sangihe group, between 3°45’ and 5°35’ N. lat. and 126°32’ and 127°10’ E. long. The main group consists of three larger islands, viz. Karakelong, Salebaboe and Kaboeroeang. The Nenoesa islands, a group formed by the small islands of Garete, Karaton, Merampi, Mengkopoe, Intata, Kakelotan and Maroh are situated northeast of the main group, including also Miangas (Palmas), an islet about 65 miles north of Karakelong, near Mindanao.

A letter from the Editor Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
Fate has knocked at your door. It has reminded you that, as to the years of your life, you are no longer a young man, that your age will be sixty five on the day this little volume will be presented to you. Time and fate are inexorable powers. Sometimes the question has occurred to me, whether we have any right to speak of a “Jubilee”, whether one’s retirement from office or the attainment of high age is something to be gratulated upon, since these events are usually not exactly welcome to the person involved. Yet, I think there cannot be any doubt as to this. For, can there be ever more reason for deep satisfaction and gratitude than when a man may without self-reproach, look back upon an honest and successful life?

A new system of the Cormophyta Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
Some time ago I proposed elsewhere (1) a new system of the Cormophyta. Since the periodical, whose hospitality was my privilege, may not reach many taxonomists who still may be expected to be interested in the proposal, I deem it justified to briefly review the results at which I arrived in the present journal; and this will give me an opportunity to explain one or two points of a nomenclatural nature which, it seems to me, were perhaps somewhat insufficiently elucidated in the paper quoted. As a matter of course, for details as well as for the full argumentation of my views I have to refer to that publication.

A new Vitex from Malaysia Naturalis
Lam, H.J.; Meeuse, A.D.J..
In 1919 Dr C. A. BACKER collected a plant in the Kangean Archipelago which had the appearance of a Cymaria so that the collector provisionally called it ”Cymaria triphylla BACKER“ (MS.). The same species was also collected by KARTA on the Island of Bawean in 1928. Some other sheets already extant in the Herbarium at Buitenzorg for a long time among the indeterminate specimens were recognized as identical with this ”Cymaria“ (TEYSMANN nr. 1750, Madoera and nr. 1768, Bawean). In 1937 Dr BACKER, when working up Javanese plants, had a closer examination of this plant and concluded that it could not be inserted in Cymaria, and even not in the Labiatae, but that it had rather to be put into the Verbenaceae. However, he found himself unable to identify the...

A tentative list of wild Pacific Sapotaceae, except those from New Caledonia Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
Several years ago the Director of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, was kind enough to lend me the Sapotaceous material from the Pacific region preserved in its Herbarium. It has been enumerated underneath together with additional material from other herbaria. These have been quoted by means of the following abbreviations, which are taken from Lanjouw’s list, published in Chronica Botanica V, 1932, 142. A. = Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, Jamaica Plain (Mass.), U.S.A. B. = Botanisches Museum, Berlin-Dahlem. Bish. = Bernice P. Bish. Museum, Honolulu, Hawaiian Isl. and some specimens from the private herbarium of Mr O. Degener. Bz. = Herbarium, Gov. Botanic Gardens, Buitenzorg, Java. Cal. = California Botanical Gardens, San Francisco. G. =...

Additional notes on Sarcosperma Naturalis
Lam, H.J.; Varossieau, W.W..
The present records are mainly based upon the collections by C. W. WANG in Yunnan, 1936. We are indebted to Dr E. D. MERRILL, Harvard University, Jamaica Plain, Mass., U.S.A., for putting these specimens to our disposal. Except for a few points, our views concerning the genus have not been essentially modified. The data mentioned are supplementary to those, published in our earlier paper: Revision of the Sarcospermataceae (Blumea 3, 1938, 183—200).

The users both at home and abroad of Dr. BACKER’s florae have always regretted that, however carefully these books have been prepared, most of them were imperfect in one way or another. They were either restricted to certain vegetations (weedflorae for tea and sugar-cane) or did not cover all groups of vascular plants; the ”Flora van Batavia“ (1907),...

Comments on Greguss’s phylogenetical tree of plants Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
Recently (1955) I have published a new version of a phylogenetical tree of the Cormophyta, based on morphology, mainly ramification, leaf types, and sporangia. The concept is monophyletic but its basis is strewn with so many queries that the way is open to a number of different opinions. I add a corrected copy of my chart at the end of the present paper (fig. 2), so as to enable the reader to compare my views with those of Greguss (fig. 1). The difficulty lies of course in our still extremely scanty knowledge of the very oldest land plants and of whether one or several eventually more or less closely related algal groups have succeeded in conquering dry land and converting themselves into true land plants in which the greater part of the sporophyte...

Concise revision of the Sarcospermataceae Naturalis
Lam, H.J.; Royen, P. van.
After the senior writer, together with W. W. Varossieau, had published a revision of this monogeneric family (Blumea III, 1938—’39 and IV, 1941), some more material has been examined by us and, moreover, some new species have been described. Thanks to the courtesy of Prof. F. Gagnepain of Paris, and the Director of the Musee d’Histoire Naturelle, Phanérogamic, we had the opportunity to examine the type specimens of Gagnepain's new species from Indo-China, All with all we felt that a new key and a brief enumeration of the species with the main literature, their synonyms and distribution, might be useful. SARCOSPERMATACEAE H. J. Lam, Bull. Jard. Bot. Buitenz., sér. III, 7, 1925, 248; Blumea III, 1, 1938, 184.

Contributions to our knowledge of the flora of Celebes (Coll. C. Monod de Froideville) and of some other Malaysian Islands Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
The following notes are mainly based upon a small but interesting collection of plants, made in 1937—1939 by Mr C. Monod de Froideville, Civil Service Officer in the Netherlands Indies, during his extensive trips in the southern and central parts of the island of Celebes. His hobby was the study of Leguminosae and about half of his collection consists of representatives of that natural order. For several reasons, however, they have been left out of the present paper, for one thing since Mr Monod is intending to deal with them later on himself, a task, which circumstances unfortunately prevent him from accomplishing at present; and secondly since they promise geographically less important results than most other families, many of them being anthropochorous....

Lam, H.J..
On March 7, 1953 the Rijksherbarium suffered a severe loss by the sudden death of its honorary co-operator Dr. D. F. van Slooten, the wellknown specialist particularly of Dipterocarpaceae. To honour his memory the following lines may serve as an obituary note. Dirk Fok van Slooten was born in Amersfoort on 17 March 1891. In the local gymnasium his biology teacher was the later Prof. A. Pulle, who was again his master at the University of Utrecht where he was matriculated in 1910. His doctor’s thesis of 1919 was dealing with the Combretaceae and Flacourtiaceae of the Dutch East Indies.

Editorial Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
Twenty-four years have elapsed since the Institution, then called „’s Rijks Herbarium”, started a series of papers entitled „Mededeelingen van ’s Rijks Herbarium, Leiden”. Exactly 70 numbers have been issued between 1910 and 1933 inclusive, most of them under the directorate of Dr J. W. C. GOETHART, to whom many thanks are due for his arduous work and his many cares in favour of these publications. After the undersigned, oil October 2nd, 1933, had taken over the directorate of the Rijksherbarium from the acting director, Dr W. A. GODDIJN, he could start realizing some projects which, in relation to his tropical experience, seemed more or less promising. First of all it was obvious that the Rijksherbarium should, to a greater degree than had been possible...

Freedom regained Naturalis
Lam, H.J..
We always have thoroughly detested the mentality of those scientific periodicals which deemed it proper to introduce politics into their columns. During the war we have repeatedly been offended by the unworthy attitude of the editorial staffs of certain botanical journals of “Greater Germany” who admitted — or possibly even deliberately furthered — perorations stating not only the marvellous achievements of nazi-methods and their amazing usefulness towards the particular field of science covered by the periodical in question, but the faith and the devotion of their persons towards the sacred cause of the nazi-system. We have, as I say, not exactly admired this mentality in a scientific paper and we will not follow the example. However, too much has...
