The determination of Mediterranean Salmonidae has been possible because of morphological and morphometrical studies and immunological and biochemical methods. It is evident that the 'sea trouts' belong to the species S. trutta fario and S. gairdneri irideus. These trouts have been acclimatized naturally to marine life. Experimental tests were undertaken in the laboratory, then in natural medium, to study the possibilities of trout acclimatization in sea water. They have confirmed the great adaptation qualities of these fishes to often extreme conditions. In the experiments undertaken in variable conditions, the influence of temperature and oxygen were exactly specified. Following these experiments, and other experiments realized in France and in other... |

The results of this first trial show that trout culture in sea water is possible in a carefully chosen site. It seems necessary to have both a water with an average salinity and a good quality fresh water, the latter being used to adjust the salinity rate to the needed value during the adaptation period and stabilize the temperature in case of important heat. Moreover, fresh water must be used as a dissolved oxygen source when this element is not found in sufficient quantities in sea water. Despite the relatively precarious conditions in which this experiment was conducted, about seven tonnes of " sea trout" have been produced from an initial input of one and a half tonnes. These large Salmonids show a white silvery look (fig. 13). Most dots have... |

The impact of suspended oyster culture (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg) on oxygen and nutrient fluxes has been studied in situ, in a coastal lagoon (Thau, France), during a seasonal cycle. On the first plan of the multiple factorial correspondences analysis (MCA), seasons were well discriminated. The fluxes were maximum in summer and minimum in winter. However, this seasonal pattern was not only linked to the water temperature, as autumn and spring (similar temperatures of about 12 degrees C) were distinct in the second factorial plan (2.3). Oxygen uptake by the oyster cultures varied between 0 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (January) and 11 823 +/- 377 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (July). Ammonia and nitrate-nitrites were released into the water column respectively at a rate of... |

Thau lagoon is a Mediterranean shellfish ecosystem with large biomasses of oysters growing in waters with high residence time due to low tidal ranges, The influence of filter feeders (oysters and their epibiota) on the spatial distribution of particulate and dissolved compounds in the water column of Thau lagoon was studied through its variation with time, In 1991/1992, daily variations were investigated in pens, corridors and outside shellfish farming zones for nutrients, chlorophyll a and primary production. Salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic matter and chlorophyll a were also monitored in surface waters inside and outside shellfish farming zones each week from January 1993 to March 1994. The presence of shellfish farms led to a decrease by... |
