Bias in peer review of organic farming grant applications Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jesper; Langer, Vibeke; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted.
An analysis of peer reviews of 84 organic farming grant applications, submitted to The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) in 2001 was carried out to investigate whether peer reviews were influenced by the peer reviewers’ affiliation to organic agriculture research and to what degree peer reviewers distinguish between scientific quality and societal relevance. Fifteen reviewers were grouped in three groups (1) scientists with affiliation to organic farming research, (2) scientists without affiliation to organic farming research and (3) users of the research. The scientist groups assessed societal relevance of the grant applications and scientific quality as a sum of three scientific criteria and the...

Bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and practice: how can we assist organic farmers in sustaining wild bees and pollination on their farms? Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke.
Wild bees (bumblebees and solitary bees) are two important groups of wild pollinators in temperate zones, delivering pollination services to crops and wild plants. It is well documented that wild bees are declining nationally and regionally in Europe (Biesmeijer et al., 2006) threatening crop pollination estimated to 14 mia. euro/year. Wild bees are dependent on presence of high quality flower resources and on suitable nesting and overwintering sites locally (Strandberg et al., 2011). In the agricultural landscape, availability of these resources depend on land use, i.e. distribution between arable land and uncropped areas, crop distribution and management as well as quantity and quality of permanent grasslands, hedgerows, road verges, etc. Although...

Changes in farm structure following conversion to organic farming in Denmark Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke.
Compared with conventional farms, organic farms are expected to be more diverse, less specialized and less intensive, and organic farms as a group are expected to contribute to a more uniform regional distribution of farm types. Data on farm size, crop distribution and livestock intensity prior to conversion and planned after conversion on 448 Danish farms, which began conversion to organic farming in 1997, are presented in adressing two questions: 1) what features characterize Danish farms that convert from conventional to organic farming ?, 2) what do the farms convert to: do farm types, stocking rates and crop distribution change with conversion ? In 1997, dairy farms dominated among the converting farms in acreage, and a large majority (80-97%) of the...

Collaborative partnerships between organic farmers Organic Eprints
Asai, Masayasu; Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
A survey of Danish dairy farmers show that - around 70% of all organic dairt farmers collaborate around manure - the main factors for success in collaboration are trust, reliabilty and timely communication -organic exporting farmers are less concerned with distance because the organic network is more dispersed. Development of well functioning collaborative partnerships may increase farm robustness to changing conditions.

Density, structure and management of landscape elements on Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Density and management of landscape elements on organic farms were investigated for 345 organic farms in Denmark in 2001, representing approximately 10% of the total number of organic farms. The density of hedgerows, area habitats and ponds was estimated and related to various aspects of farm character, such as size, type and lifestyle/part time/full time farms, as well as region and biophysical context. A large variation in the densities was found, the highest densities were found on the smallest farms. Farm size was the farm parameter that was closest related to the density of landscape elements as well as landscape structural variables. Farm size was related to the other farm characteristics.

Diversity as a key concept for organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke; Frederiksen, Pia.
Diversity is a key concept of organic agriculture and is intuitively perceived as having positive, but not always explicit, consequences for the internal functioning of the farm as well as for the impact on environment and farmland nature. In two groups of specialised organic farms (arable and dairy) and a group of mixed farms, links between production diversity and diversity at the scales above and below, as well as relations to potential farmland biodiversity, are examined. Results show that diversity in different scales are not consistently correlated, i.e. neither high diversity in farm household on-farm activities, nor diversity in agricultural production are linked to high crop and land use diversity. Furthermore, there are no simple relations...

Energy efficiency of organic pear production in greenhouses in China Organic Eprints
Liu, Y.; Langer, Vibeke; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Egelyng, Henrik.
The development of organic protected cultivation taking place in densely populated areas has raised the question whether it is an environmentally friendly production system. The present study investigated energy consumption of organic pear production in two production systems, namely in traditional Chinese solar greenhouse and in the open field. In both production systems, energy output/input ratio and energy productivity were used as indicators to determine the energy efficiency; yield, cost of production, net economic return pear land area unit and benefit/cost ratio were used to evaluate economic productivity. The analysis results indicated that energy input and energy output in the solar greenhouse were higher than in open field per land area; whereas...

Energy use in organic, green and conventional pear producting systems - cases from China Organic Eprints
Liu, Yuexian; Langer, Vibeke; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Egelyng, Henrik.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences in the energy consumption between the production of certified organic pear, green food certified pear, and conventional pear in two areas in China. Data were collected from interviews with farmers during 2007 and 2008. Energy inputs were significantly higher in organic systems compared with conventional and green systems. Fertilizer was the most important contributor to energy consumption in all three farming systems. Three calculation methods for energy value of manure have been found in the literature: substitution method, by-product method, and thermal method. The choise of various calculation methods for estimating the energy value of manure turns out to have great influence on the results in...

Environmental assessment of organic juice imported to Denmark: a case study on oranges (Citrus sinensis) from Brazil Organic Eprints
Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Almeida, Gustavo Fonseca de; Langer, Vibeke; Abreu, Lucimar Santiago de; Halberg, Niels.
Growing global trade with organic products has given rise to a debate on the environmental impacts during both production and transport. Environmental hotspots of organic orange juice produced by smallholders in Brazil, processed and imported to Denmark were identified in a case study using a life cycle approach. Furthermore, small-scale organic orange production was compared with small-scale conventional and large-scale organic orange production in the case study area in Brazil. Transport was the main contributor (57%) to the global warming potential of organic orange juice from small-scale farmers imported to Denmark, followed by the processing stage (29%), especially the truck transport of fresh oranges in Brazil and of reconstituted orange juice...

Factors reducing yield in organic white clover seed production in Denmark Organic Eprints
Langer, Vibeke; Rohde, Benjamin.
Factors reducing yield of organic white clover seed production were investigated in Denmark. In thirty-six fields from different regions, density of flower heads and their area, and weevils of the genera Apion and Hypera, hatching from flower heads, were assessed. In fifteen of these fields, additional measurements were made in order to calculate potential yield and yieldreducing factors. Flower heads had a mean of ninetytwo florets per head, of which proportionately 0,59 were intact, 0,08 were not pollinated and 0,34 damaged by weevils; 0,16 of the florets contained larvae of Apion species. In intact florets the mean number of seeds was 3,6. Density and size of flower heads were correlated with low density of flower heads leading to significantly more...

Hvordan udvikler det økologiske jordbrug sig regionalt? Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
