We investigate the vertical water exit of a flat solid body initially in contact with a water surface. An original experimental technique based on light diffusion in a transparent mock-up is proposed for the tracking of the boundary of the surface of contact between the solid and the water. The feasability of the technique is shown by studying three bodies : a circular disc, an elliptic disc and a square plate. The results obtained for the circular disc are compared to results obtained with the CFD software ABAQUS and the analytical model of Korobkin (2013).

Tank tests of circular horizontal plates, solid and porous, are conducted in forced heave motion and under the action of incident waves in fixed configuration. Hydrodynamic coefficients for added inertia and drag are identified from experimental results. Their dependency with the Keulegan Carpenter number and other parameters is evaluated. The acquired data open the possibility of additional investigations and assessment with numerical calculations in viscous fluid (CFD).

The automated monitoring of physico-chemical parameters in the coastal zone has been using large buoys and fixed infrastructures. A better understanding of many estuaries is needed in order to fulfil the agenda and requirements of the European Water Framework Directive. In order to address the fluxes of nutrients as well as algal blooms and low oxygen events, the "TROPHIMATIQUE" project has developed a new generation of instruments able to be deployed in sea waters. The smaller size of the new instruments is intended to facilitate the maintenance. A new multi-parameter probe has been developed. The design of wave energy mooring systems is challenging: overdesign incurs a significant cost penalty, underdesign may lead to a premature failure and incorrect design could reduce the power production. Consequently, compliant mooring systems are being developed for wave energy applications. This paper presents tank test results for a scale model of the buoy and mooring used at the SouthWest Mooring Test Facility (SWMTF), an offshore facility developed to conduct long-term sea trials for wave energy device moorings. We investigate experimentally the time evolution of the wetted surface during the lifting of a body initially floating at the water surface. This phenomenon is referred to as the water exit problem. The water exit experiments were conducted with transparent (PMMA) mock-ups of two different shapes: a circular disc and a square flat plate. Two different lighting systems were used to diffuse light in the mock-up material: a central high-power LED light normal to the surface and an edge-lighting system featuring an array of LED lights. These setups make it possible to illuminate the contact line, which delimits the surface of contact between the mock-up and the water.
