| Agricultural transition in Uzbekistan, as in all CIS countries, is driven by a process of land reform, which involves redistribution of land among producers and concomitant changes in farm structure. In this article we review the process of land reform since Uzbekistan’s independence and examine its impacts on agricultural growth and rural family incomes. The analysis is based on official statistics and data from a farm-level survey carried out in 2007. |

| Over fifteen years have elapsed since the transition from the centrally planned economic system started in the early 1990’s. During this time agricultural and rural areas of Central and Eastern Europe have undergone profound structural changes with wide variations in the degree of transformation and in the rate of success in creating a competitive market and private ownership based food and agricultural system. By becoming member of the European Union the "transition" in its traditional interpretation has been concluded in ten of the Central East European countries. | Profitability measures are omitted from performance analyses of marketing pool cooperatives that do not include raw products in their reported costs. A procedure to estimate the profitability of these cooperatives is proposed, converting net proceeds to a figure comparable to standard net profit or net margin. The median ROE calculated using the proposed adjustment was found to be significantly different from the median ROE of "net-margin-reporting" pools over the period 1971-1987. Application of this procedure will allow pool cooperatives to compare their profitability to other cooperatives and investor-owned firms. |
